SQLite vs. Firebase: What to Know About Choosing Local-Only Storage

Local-only SQLite can limit routine cloud exposure, while Firestore provides managed synchronization and offline caching. The right choice depends on who needs the data and what the app must do.

Local-only SQLite keeps a database on a device instead of routinely sending that database’s contents to a cloud backend. That can reduce cloud exposure for data that stays local, but it is not a complete privacy guarantee: the app may still transmit telemetry, sync other data, or create backups. Firebase’s Cloud Firestore is cloud-hosted, though it can cache data and work offline before synchronizing changes when connectivity returns.

Should I use SQLite or Firebase for my app?

Choose based on where the app’s authoritative data should live and who needs to share it. SQLite is an embedded SQL database: it runs in the application process, reads and writes ordinary files, and can keep a complete database in one file. The SQLite Project describes its purpose as providing “local data storage for individual applications and devices.” SQLite overview · SQLite usage guidance

Cloud Firestore is a different architecture: a managed, cloud-hosted database designed for synchronization across clients, realtime updates, and scale. Its offline cache does not turn it into a local-only database; changes made offline can be synchronized to the backend after reconnection. Cloud Firestore overview

Decision point Local SQLite Cloud Firestore
Where data resides In local application storage; the app is responsible for any backup or sync it adds. In a cloud-hosted database, with offline caching available on supported clients.
Sharing state Local by default; sharing across users or devices requires a separate mechanism. Built for clients to share synchronized data and receive realtime updates.
Offline use Local reads and writes do not require a network connection. Can use cached data and accept local changes offline; those changes sync on reconnection.
Operational work The app team handles database migrations, device replacement, backups, and any sync layer. The service provides managed cloud capabilities, while the team must configure access controls and decide what data to send and retain.

Is SQLite more private than Firebase?

It can reduce routine cloud transfer when the relevant data genuinely remains on-device. A local database does not, by itself, establish that the whole app is private: analytics, crash reports, account features, cloud backups, or a separate sync feature can still send information elsewhere. The meaningful question is what data leaves the device, for what purpose, and how long it is retained.

Firestore is not inherently insecure. Firebase provides Security Rules, Authentication, and IAM controls, but those controls need correct configuration and testing. Firebase warns that permissive Firestore rules can expose data or allow unwanted changes, and advises against placing sensitive information in project IDs, document names, or field names. Local storage also has a security boundary. An attacker with access to an unlocked device or an app vulnerability may still reach local data; SQLite specifically recommends additional precautions when applications accept untrusted SQL or database files. SQLite security guidance Privacy therefore depends on the application’s data flows, device protections, access controls, and retention choices—not on the database name alone.

Can Firebase work offline?

Yes. Firestore can cache actively used data and accept local changes while offline; when the client reconnects, those changes synchronize with the backend. If multiple changes target the same document, Firestore uses last-write-wins behavior. Offline support is useful for continuity, but it is not equivalent to keeping all data exclusively on a device. On the web, Firestore persistence is disabled by default. When enabled, its cache is not automatically cleared between sessions, a consideration for shared or public devices. Offline behavior and cache configuration should be part of the app’s privacy and data-retention design, not treated as a substitute for it.

When should I use a local database instead of a cloud database?

Choose SQLite when data belongs on one device

  • The app should work without a network connection and its data does not need to be shared live among users or devices.
  • You want a straightforward local persistence layer and can take responsibility for migrations, backups, and device replacement.
  • Write activity is modest enough for local storage. SQLite’s official guidance recommends it for device-local storage with low writer concurrency and less than a terabyte of content; it recommends client/server engines when data is across a network or many writers cannot take turns. Choose Firestore when shared, synchronized state is core

  • Users need to see updates across devices or collaborate through shared data.
  • Realtime listeners, managed cloud storage, and synchronization are product requirements rather than optional conveniences.
  • You are prepared to define least-privilege rules, test them, and make an explicit choice about what information is transmitted to and retained by the cloud service. Firebase recommends writing rules as data structures are introduced and testing them in the Local Emulator Suite. Firebase security checklist

What a local-only design still needs to decide

Moving persistence to the device moves several responsibilities to the application team. Before adopting SQLite as the only database, specify how the app will handle:

  • Backups: whether users can export or back up data, where copies go, and how sensitive backups are protected.
  • Migrations: how schema changes preserve existing user data across app upgrades.
  • Device loss or replacement: what users can recover if the device is unavailable or erased.
  • Optional synchronization: which data, if any, may leave the device, how conflicts are resolved, and whether users can control or disable sync.

These are consequences of making the device the data home; SQLite does not supply a cross-device sync service. Conversely, adding cloud sync to a local-first app changes its privacy boundary and should be explained as a deliberate feature, not an invisible implementation detail.
