SQL Server 2008 R2 Requirements: Hardware, Windows Versions, and Express Limits

SQL Server 2008 R2 installation requirements vary by edition and package. See processor and memory baselines, listed SP2 Express Windows versions, disk space, prerequisites, and engine limits.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a typical SQL Server 2008 R2 installation, Microsoft Press lists a minimum of 1 GB of RAM, a 1.0 GHz x86 or 1.4 GHz x64 processor, and recommends 4 GB or more of RAM and a 2.0 GHz processor. SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 Express lists 2.2 GB of installation disk space, but its Database Engine is limited to one physical processor, 1 GB of memory, and 10 GB of storage. Windows compatibility and disk needs depend on the exact edition, service pack, architecture, and selected components.

SQL Server 2008 R2 hardware requirements

Microsoft Press’s 2010 installation guidance gives these figures for a typical full installation. They are baseline installation guidance, not a sizing recommendation for a production database workload.

Component Minimum Recommended
x86 processor 1.0 GHz; Pentium III-compatible or faster 2.0 GHz
x64 processor 1.4 GHz; supported families include AMD Opteron/Athlon 64 and Intel Xeon or Pentium IV with EM64T 2.0 GHz
Memory 1 GB 4 GB or more
Installation disk space 2.2 GB for SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 Express, according to Microsoft’s 2024 download page Full-edition space varies with installed components; Microsoft Press (2010) does not give one universal figure

These processor and memory values are minimum/recommended installation requirements, not guarantees of acceptable performance. The Express disk figure is for the SP2 Express package; budget separate space for database files, transaction logs, backups, paging, and optional components.

Which Windows versions are listed for SQL Server 2008 R2 Express?

Microsoft’s 2024 download page for SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 Express lists Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista, and Windows XP. This list applies to that Express package; it should not be treated as a universal compatibility list for every edition, architecture, or service-pack media.

Before installing another edition or package, verify its own operating-system and architecture requirements. The material cited here does not establish the supported Windows versions for every full SQL Server 2008 R2 edition.

SQL Server 2008 R2 Express limits

Microsoft lists the Express Database Engine limits as one physical processor, 1 GB of memory, and 10 GB of storage. These are engine limits, not the computer’s maximum hardware capacity: adding RAM or processors to the host does not raise the stated Express limits.

Before you install

  1. Verify Windows support. Check the exact SQL Server 2008 R2 edition and service-pack package against the operating system. The six Windows versions listed above refer specifically to SP2 Express.
  2. Choose the matching architecture. Check whether the target system and installation media are x86, x64, or IA64 before setup. The listed x86 and x64 processor figures are not an IA64 specification.
  3. Plan storage beyond setup. Treat 2.2 GB as the SP2 Express installation-space figure only. Allow additional capacity for databases, logs, backups, paging, and selected components; full-edition disk space depends on what is installed.
  4. Prepare permissions and prerequisites. The SP2 Express installer requires administrator rights and Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or later, according to Microsoft’s 2024 download page.
  5. Account for Express engine caps. Confirm that one physical processor, up to 1 GB memory, and up to 10 GB storage suit the intended database workload.
