Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Then restrict any user-controlled choices that affect SQL structure to fixed, code-defined options, review dynamic SQL inside stored procedures, and give the application database account only the permissions it needs.
How SQL injection happens
SQL injection occurs when an application builds a query by combining SQL code with untrusted input. If that input changes the query’s structure or meaning, the database may execute something the application did not intend. The core fix is to define the query structure separately and provide user data as bound parameters.

OWASP’s SQL Injection Prevention Cheat Sheet explains that parameterized queries require the developer to define SQL first and pass parameters afterward. It also provides examples for Java and .NET, with links to guidance for other languages. See the OWASP SQL Injection Prevention Cheat Sheet.

Replace query-string concatenation with your language or framework’s prepared-statement or parameterized-query API. Keep the SQL template fixed, and bind every untrusted value separately. For example, an application can use a placeholder for a customer name and pass the name through the database driver’s parameter-binding method; the name is treated as data, not SQL syntax.
#1 Best Overall
- Bind values from forms, URLs, APIs, cookies, and other user-controlled sources.
- Do not interpolate a value into the SQL text before execution.
- Use the API’s documented parameter syntax and binding methods for your database driver.
Parameterized queries are the primary defense, not just a way to sanitize suspicious characters. OWASP’s Query Parameterization Cheat Sheet covers the general approach.
Handle table names, columns, and sort directions separately
Parameters generally bind data values, not SQL identifiers or syntax. A placeholder cannot normally stand in for a table name, column name, or the direction in an ORDER BY clause. Do not solve that limitation by concatenating arbitrary input, even after checking its format.

Instead, translate a user’s choice into one of a small set of fixed options defined by the application. For example, map a requested sort field to an approved column and map the requested direction to either ASC or DESC. Reject choices that are not in the allow-list. Where practical, redesign the query so the choice can be supplied as a bound value.
Validation still matters for enforcing expected types, ranges, formats, and enumerated choices, but it is a secondary control. Do not rely on blocking apostrophes or other punctuation: legitimate free-form text may contain punctuation and Unicode. OWASP explains both input validation and query construction in its Input Validation Cheat Sheet and SQL Injection Prevention Cheat Sheet.

Use stored procedures safely
Stored procedures can prevent injection when they keep user values parameterized, but using a procedure does not guarantee safety. A procedure that assembles and executes dynamic SQL from untrusted input can reintroduce the same vulnerability.
Review procedures for dynamic query construction and execution. If dynamic SQL is necessary, ensure its structure comes from fixed, allowed choices and pass data values through the database’s safe parameter-binding mechanism. Parameterization between the application and a procedure does not protect unsafe SQL assembled inside that procedure.

Choose between prepared statements and stored procedures based on the application’s language, database, and data-access design. In either approach, user data must remain separate from SQL structure. OWASP discusses injection prevention in its Injection Prevention Cheat Sheet.

Least privilege reduces the potential damage if an injection flaw is exploited; it does not prevent the flaw. Give each application identity only the permissions needed for its functions. A feature that only reads data should not use an account with write or administrator access.

- Consider read-only access or procedure-only permissions when those fit the application and database design.
OWASP’s guidance on database security and secure database access provides further permission-hardening advice.
Do not rely on escaping as the main defense
Escaping depends on the database and the context in which data is used. Treating it as a universal fix is fragile and cannot be guaranteed to prevent injection in every situation. OWASP strongly discourages escaping all user-supplied input as the primary prevention strategy. Use parameterized queries for values and fixed allow-lists for SQL elements that cannot be bound.
Review code and database behavior
During code review, look for places where user-controlled data reaches a query and verify that values are bound rather than concatenated. Also inspect stored procedures and other code paths that construct dynamic SQL. OWASP’s Secure Code Review Cheat Sheet offers a broader review framework.
