First, check whether bright light is reflecting in your monitor or whether the whole image looks washed out. For a reflection, move the screen so windows and bright lights are to its side, not directly in front of or behind it. Then control the light and adjust the monitor’s brightness. A filter is a later option because it can reduce image clarity.
Tell a reflection from a washed-out image
Look for a visible reflection of a window, lamp, or overhead light. If you can see one on the screen, turning up brightness may not solve the cause: the reflected light is competing with the image. OSHA explains that bright light shining on a display can wash out what is shown and make work harder to see. Glare can also contribute to eyestrain, headaches, or awkward viewing postures.

If there is no distinct reflection but the image still seems dim, adjust the monitor’s brightness using its controls and reassess in the room’s actual lighting. Brightness and reflection handling are separate factors; a brighter screen does not remove a reflected light source.
Make these no-cost changes first
- Reposition the monitor. Turn or move it so windows and bright fixtures are not reflected in the display. Where possible, put windows at right angles to the screen rather than directly in front of or behind it. OSHA and Lenovo both recommend positioning the monitor to minimize reflections.
- Control window light. Close blinds or drapes when direct sunlight reaches the screen. If practical, adjust the desk or furniture so bright light is not in your field of view.
- Soften other lighting. Use diffuse, indirect, or shielded lighting where possible. Move or shield a desk lamp if its reflection lands on the display, and avoid intense, uneven light around the screen.
- Adjust brightness as conditions change. Use the monitor’s own controls to set a comfortable level for the room. Recheck it when daylight or room lighting changes; do not rely on brightness alone to overcome a direct reflection.
- Clean the screen safely. Dust can contribute to glare. Follow the cleaning instructions for your particular display rather than using an unverified cleaning method.

When a filter or monitor hood may help
Screen-mounted glare filter
Consider a filter only if repositioning the screen and changing the lighting do not resolve the problem. Check the display’s exact dimensions and aspect ratio so the filter fits. OSHA advises that an installed filter should not significantly decrease visibility, and Lenovo cautions that filters can affect clarity.
Monitor hood
A hood can block environmental light from reaching the display. EIZO describes purpose-made hoods and a DIY option using a cut-to-size panel with a matte-black interior, but any hood must leave the monitor’s heat-release vents uncovered. What to compare if you replace the monitor
For a monitor that will live in a bright room, compare reflection handling, brightness, screen finish, and the adjustability needed to position it well. A matte surface can diffuse or spread reflections; a glossy screen may look clearer but can show more distinct reflections. Neither finish is best for every room and viewing setup. Manufacturers may also market specific matte-screen models. For example, Samsung describes a matte display on its ViewFinity S8 (S80PB), but that product-specific example is not evidence that every matte display will perform the same way. See Samsung’s product explanation for its claims.

- Reflection handling: Look for evidence about both direct reflections and overall reflection performance, rather than relying only on the finish label.
- Brightness: Consider the room’s ambient light, but remember that more brightness does not eliminate reflections.
- Finish: Weigh matte reflection diffusion against the potential clarity and reflection tradeoffs of glossy surfaces.
- Ergonomics: Check that the stand or mount lets you angle and position the screen to keep bright sources out of its reflection.
