Sprout is an upcoming open-source motherboard that modernizes selected monochrome iPods without changing their shells, clickwheels or displays. It adds Bluetooth audio, Wi‑Fi, USB‑C, a Hi‑Fi headphone output and SD-card storage up to 2TB. The Pi version also runs Linux-based apps and demonstrated Spotify and Apple Music, although those streaming services are not guaranteed at launch.
What Sprout replaces—and what it keeps
The project is designed as a drop-in motherboard for an existing donor iPod. It keeps the original enclosure and user-facing parts, including the clickwheel and display. The battery and hard drive are the exceptions: Sprout uses a new battery arrangement and replaces the hard-drive-based storage with an SD card.

The maker describes the installation as requiring no soldering and being fully reversible. That makes this a board swap rather than a permanent modification to the case or controls. You still need a compatible donor iPod and suitable replacement battery before building one.

A 5th-, 6th- or 7th-generation iPod is not listed and should not be assumed to work. Check the exact generation of a used donor before buying it; similar-looking classic iPods can have different internal layouts.
Sprout Pico versus Sprout Pi
There are two hardware versions. Pico uses a Raspberry Pi RP2350 and is aimed at local, offline playback with wireless headphones and Wi‑Fi features. Pi adds a Raspberry Pi Compute Module Zero, providing a Linux environment for streaming, AirPlay, podcasts and custom applications.

The Pi’s extra computing hardware is the reason to choose it for apps and network services. Pico is the simpler choice if your priority is a long-running local music player rather than a Linux device.
Modern connections and audio hardware
Both boards document Bluetooth audio, Wi‑Fi, USB‑C charging and data transfer, and digital audio over USB‑C. The original remote connector also exposes two GPIO pins. Inline remote controls connected through USB‑C are listed as supported.

The analog output remains the iPod’s 3.5mm jack, fed by a Hi‑Fi DAC identified as CS43131 or a similar part. Bluetooth headphones and earbuds can use the wireless audio function; pairing behavior with a particular accessory will depend on the final firmware.

The author specifies a standard 3.7V LiPo battery with a JST PH 2.0mm connector. Exact battery dimensions, connector polarity and clearance inside the enclosure must be checked for each donor and battery combination. Do not order a cell solely by capacity: a battery that is electrically correct may not fit or may have the wrong connector orientation.

How the USB-C conversion works
Sprout’s USB-C ports are part of the replacement motherboard, so the project does not require soldering a new connector onto the original iPod board. The board provides USB-C charging and data, digital audio output and inline remote-control support while retaining the original case and controls. Installation is intended to be reversible, but the project’s final build documentation should be followed for the exact assembly and battery connection procedure.
What “Spotify support” actually means
Spotify and Apple Music were working proofs of concept as of September 2026 on Sprout Pi. The maker warns that both services change their application programming interfaces frequently, so a demonstration does not establish permanent support or guarantee that either service will work when hardware ships.

The project author also says those service APIs do not permit downloading tracks for offline listening. Sprout can still play your own locally stored files from the SD card; streaming-service access should be treated as an online feature that may change or disappear.
Availability, price and what to verify
Sprout remains an upcoming hardware project rather than a verified retail product. The launch is planned through Crowd Supply, and the official page asks prospective builders to sign up for updates. A TechSpot report dated October 15, 2026 said pricing had not yet been published, and no shipping date was established.
