Spotify may be part of the reason your music sounds quieter, flatter, or distorted in Android Auto—but the symptom alone does not prove Spotify is at fault. Check Spotify’s volume-normalization setting, then compare the same recording through Android Auto and other routes your phone and car support. Those checks can narrow down where the difference appears without assuming one universal fix.
First, record the setup
Before changing anything, note your phone model, Android version, vehicle or head-unit, and whether Android Auto is wired or wireless. Audio behavior can depend on that particular combination, and the information available here does not establish a current, model-specific defect or fix.

Also note what you hear: lower volume, distortion, or a change in treble or bass. If the problem happens with other music apps too, that is useful to know when you contact support.

Spotify says volume normalization balances soft and loud songs to create a more uniform listening experience. Its Android instructions put the control at Settings and privacy > Playback > Volume controls > Volume normalization. Spotify describes Loud, Normal, and Quiet as choices that affect the overall level and listening experience; Normal is the default, Loud may suit noisy environments, and Quiet may suit quieter ones. - Open Spotify on your Android phone and go to Settings and privacy > Playback > Volume controls > Volume normalization.
- Note the current selection. Compare playback with normalization off, keeping the listening level comfortable.
- If turning it off makes no difference, restore your preferred setting.
This is a diagnostic comparison, not a Spotify-certified repair for Android Auto. Spotify also says audio settings cannot be changed while Spotify Connect is playing on another device, so the available controls may depend on the playback path.
Compare playback routes fairly
Spotify lists Android Auto, Bluetooth, and AUX among the ways to listen in a car. Play the same recording through Android Auto and, if available, through the car’s separate Bluetooth connection. Match perceived loudness as closely as you can: a louder route can seem better even when the sound itself is not. Listen for volume, distortion, and tonal differences.

If the routes sound different, that shows the symptom varies with the playback route or its processing; it does not identify a single cause. Spotify’s car-listening guide, updated April 9, 2024, describes these options. Individual users have also reported differences: a June 27, 2025 Google Android Auto community post described flat, over-modulated wired playback in a 2020 Kia Soul with a Motorola Edge 2024, while Bluetooth sounded better; an October 27, 2021 post described quieter playback and weaker treble and bass in a 2021 VW Tiguan with a Samsung S10+. AUX can provide another comparison if your car has an AUX input and your phone supports audio output through the connection. Some phones need an audio adapter, such as a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter, but compatibility depends on the phone. AUX is an optional test, not an Android Auto repair, and it does not keep the Android Auto interface.

Use the results to choose the next step
- Normalization changes the sound: Choose the Spotify setting that suits your listening environment and preference.
- Only Android Auto sounds different: You have narrowed the observation to that route or its processing, but the comparison does not reveal which component is responsible.
- Other apps sound affected too: Include that detail when seeking help, since the symptom is not limited to Spotify.
- The issue appears only with one phone and car pairing: Contact support for the relevant phone, vehicle, or head-unit with the models, Android version, wired or wireless setup, and the comparisons you tried.
The available reports do not establish a general codec cause or a reliable developer-setting workaround. Avoid treating either as a universal fix.
