If Spotify keeps changing the order of songs or adding tracks you didn’t choose, check which shuffle mode is active. Standard Shuffle reorders the selected music; Smart Shuffle adds recommendations; and Premium’s Fewer Repeats mode tries to avoid recently played tracks. The controls depend on your plan and device, and shuffle is only one way to find new music.
Why does Spotify only play on shuffle?
Shuffle changes the playback order of music in a playlist, album, or artist profile; it does not mean Spotify has stopped playing the selected music in sequence forever. Spotify’s support instructions and available controls vary by plan and platform, so a shuffle option that appears on one device may not look the same on another. - Fewer Repeats, available to Premium listeners, favors tracks that have not played recently.
- Smart Shuffle mixes personalized recommendations into the session. Recommended tracks carry an Enhance badge in Now Playing.
Why can songs repeat on Shuffle?
Random ordering does not guarantee that every track will play once before any song repeats. Spotify says Standard Shuffle does not account for recent listening, and a random sequence can include repeats or make some tracks seem to appear more often. That can feel less random than a carefully varied sequence, even when the order is random.

What Premium’s Fewer Repeats does
Spotify’s Fewer Repeats mode uses recent plays to choose among multiple randomly generated sequences. Its system scores sequences for freshness: recent plays from the playlist and elsewhere on Spotify lower a sequence’s score, with particular weight when a recently played track appears near the beginning. Spotify then selects the sequence with the highest freshness score. This reduces the chance of hearing recent tracks again; it does not promise a once-through of every song before a repeat. Spotify Engineering describes Fewer Repeats as the default Premium shuffle experience, while Standard remains available for listeners who prefer pure randomness. How to turn off Smart Shuffle on Spotify
On mobile, Spotify says Smart Shuffle is always active for Free listeners. Premium listeners can turn it on in playlists or Liked Songs, and can disable its inclusion in playback modes through the Playback setting. These instructions describe mobile behavior; do not assume the same setting or path is available on every device.

- Open Spotify and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings and privacy, then Playback.
- Switch off Include Smart Shuffle in play modes.
If recommendations still appear, check the active shuffle icon and the Now Playing screen for an Enhance badge. Confirm your plan and device before troubleshooting further: Spotify’s documented mobile plan behavior does not establish an identical control path for desktop, web player, or other platforms. Other options include searching for playlists by keyword, asking friends to share playlists, and looking at playlists on friends’ or artists’ profiles. - Stay with a chosen playlist: use Standard Shuffle to change its order, or Smart Shuffle if you want Spotify to insert recommendations.
- Reduce recent repeats: Premium’s Fewer Repeats mode uses recent plays to favor a fresher sequence.
- Explore beyond the current selection: try Discover Weekly, Release Radar, or another made-for-you playlist, each with its own stated refresh schedule.
- Choose tracks more directly: search for a playlist or browse one shared by a friend or artist.
Spotify has not published a head-to-head study establishing which of these routes leads to more discoveries, nor a general statistic for how many songs people discover through Shuffle.

Is Spotify for Artists’ Discovery Mode the same feature?
No. Spotify for Artists’ Discovery Mode is an artist campaign feature, not a listener control for adding songs to a personal shuffle session. Its recommendations use machine-learning signals that include song performance in Discovery Mode contexts over the previous 28 days, artist metrics, and past appearances in personalized playlists.
