To switch a Samsung TV to HDMI, press Home on the remote, move left to Connected Devices, and select the HDMI input matching the port your device uses. If your remote has a Source button, press it and choose that input instead. Samsung notes that menus can vary by model and country, so labels may differ. Samsung’s source-selection instructions describe both options.
Choose the HDMI input connected to your device
The HDMI number in the TV menu must correspond to the physical port used by the device. For example, a device plugged into HDMI 2 should be viewed through the TV’s HDMI 2 source. If the TV uses a One Connect Box, check which numbered port on that box holds the cable.

- Samsung Smart Remote: Press Home, move left, choose Connected Devices, then select the relevant HDMI input.
- Remote with a Source button: Press Source and select the numbered HDMI input.
Some remotes do not have a dedicated Source button; use the Home-screen route when that control is absent. Samsung’s menu wording may differ by model or country. Samsung’s source guide gives the current route it documents.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteConnect a device and select its HDMI source
- Turn off the TV and the external device before connecting them, as Samsung recommends for cable and satellite boxes.
- Connect the device’s HDMI OUT to an available HDMI IN port on the TV or One Connect Box. Note the port number.
- Turn on the TV and the connected device.
- If the TV does not switch to it automatically, open Home > left > Connected Devices on a Smart Remote, or press Source on a remote with that button, then select the matching HDMI input.
A cable or satellite box may be detected and renamed automatically, but detection and automatic switching are not guaranteed. Choose the numbered input yourself if the device does not appear under a descriptive name. See Samsung’s instructions for connecting cable boxes and other devices and its external-device setup guidance.

Samsung TVs also offer universal-remote setup on supported models, allowing a remote to be configured for an external device and its HDMI port. The steps depend on device category and interface; consult the instructions for your model rather than assuming one setup path applies to every TV. Samsung’s universal-remote guide explains its US setup, while Samsung Canada’s guide covers external-device control.
Understand automatic switching and Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC)
Anynet+ is Samsung’s name for HDMI-CEC, a feature that lets compatible devices communicate over HDMI. When the TV and connected device support it and Anynet+ is enabled, the TV remote may control some device functions, and a device starting up may cause the TV to turn on or switch inputs. An HDMI cable alone does not provide those CEC behaviors; the connected device must support them. Samsung’s HDMI-CEC overview explains the feature.

| Setting | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Anynet+ enabled | Compatible devices may support control through the TV remote and may trigger automatic power or input changes. |
| Anynet+ disabled | CEC-based device control and related automatic interactions are unavailable; you can still select the HDMI input manually. |
The setting’s location depends on TV generation. Samsung Australia documents these routes: 2025–2026, Settings > All Settings > General & Privacy > External Device Manager > Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC); 2023–2024, Settings > All Settings > Connection > External Device Manager > Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC); 2022, Settings > General & Privacy > External Device Manager > Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC); and 2017–2021, Settings > General > External Device Manager > Anynet+. Older models use different System or Menu routes. These are Samsung Australia’s documented paths, not universal labels; check the support page for your exact model and region if the menu differs. Samsung Australia’s Anynet+ guide lists the generations and paths.
Fix a missing or blank HDMI input
- Check the selected input: Confirm the device is on and select the HDMI number where its cable is physically connected. Samsung’s connection guidance covers external devices and inputs.
- Separate viewing from CEC control: If you only want to view the device, select its HDMI input manually. Anynet+ compatibility matters for HDMI-CEC control or automatic switching, not for basic manual source selection. Samsung’s Anynet+ guide describes those requirements.
- Check the cable and connection: Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends. If connection or Anynet+ behavior remains unreliable, Samsung recommends trying another high-speed HDMI cable; that is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix. Samsung Singapore’s troubleshooting guidance includes this check.
- Restart and update: Power cycle the TV and connected device, then check for available firmware updates for both. Samsung includes these checks in its Anynet+ troubleshooting steps.
Stop the TV from switching inputs by itself
A connected HDMI device can send a signal that prompts the TV to change sources, even when the device is not being used. Samsung recommends updating the TV software first, then checking for an external-device firmware update. If the behavior continues, contact the device maker because the device may be sending erroneous signals. Samsung’s source-switching troubleshooting page addresses this issue.

Turning off Anynet+ can prevent automatic behavior associated with HDMI-CEC, but it also removes CEC-based control of connected devices through the TV remote. If you still want those controls, leave Anynet+ enabled and investigate the external device instead. Samsung also discusses automatic power behavior in its TV or projector power troubleshooting guide.
