Spotify Lossless is technically superior, but it is not automatically a better everyday setting. Lossless can deliver up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC, while Very High is a lossy stream of approximately 320 kbit/s. The audible advantage depends on the recording, your headphones or speakers, the connection path, and your listening environment.
For Bluetooth listening, capped cellular plans, or ordinary portable use, Very High is usually the sensible choice. Lossless makes the most sense for Premium subscribers using a stable Wi-Fi connection with wired equipment or a compatible non-Bluetooth Spotify Connect device.

What Spotify Very High and Lossless actually deliver
The two settings differ in both encoding and maximum resolution. Very High reduces the source with lossy compression; Lossless preserves the encoded source data in FLAC rather than discarding information to reduce the stream size.
| Characteristic | Very High | Lossless |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding | Lossy compression | FLAC lossless compression |
| Published maximum quality | Approximately 320 kbit/s | Up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz |
| What reaches the app’s playback path | A smaller, perceptually compressed stream | Source data retained within the supported FLAC stream |
| Premium subscription required | No special Lossless requirement | Yes |
| Best connection for the stated quality | Works over normal mobile, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth use | Wi-Fi with wired equipment or a suitable non-Bluetooth Spotify Connect route |
“Up to” is important: 24-bit/44.1 kHz is the published ceiling, not a guarantee that every track is delivered at that resolution. The original recording and the available version of that recording determine what Lossless can preserve.

Does Lossless always sound better?
It can sound cleaner or more open when the recording and playback chain expose the difference, but there is no universal audible improvement for every listener. A well-mastered track at Very High may already sound excellent. Background noise, inexpensive speakers, earbud limitations, room acoustics, and the listener’s hearing can mask the distinctions. Lossless removes one source of compression, but it cannot improve a recording that was already poorly mastered.
Spotify itself ties the result to the way the music was originally recorded and to compatible playback equipment. Treat Lossless as a higher technical ceiling, not a promise that every song will produce a dramatic change.
What does “up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz” mean in practice?
Bit depth describes the resolution used for amplitude, while the 44.1 kHz sample rate describes how often the audio is sampled. Those numbers identify the maximum format Spotify publishes for Lossless; they do not mean every album was created or delivered at that exact specification. A track recorded at a lower resolution cannot gain detail simply because Lossless is selected.

Lossless also does not undo mastering choices. If a source has aggressive limiting, distortion, or a poor balance, the same characteristics remain in the FLAC version. The benefit is preservation of the source Spotify receives, not restoration or remastering.
How much data does each setting use?
Very High has a published rate of approximately 320 kbit/s. Converting that rate to an hour of continuous audio gives:
320,000 bits/second × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 = 144,000,000 bytes
That is about 144 MB per hour using decimal megabytes. The figure is an arithmetic conversion of Spotify’s stated bitrate, not a guarantee of identical billing for every session. Protocol overhead, buffering, playback interruptions, and other app traffic can alter the amount shown by a carrier or router.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLossless data is substantially higher
Spotify recommends a steady 1.5–2 Mbps connection for the best Lossless experience. If a stream continuously consumed that recommended bandwidth, the equivalent hourly transfer would be approximately:
| Continuous rate | Calculation | Approximate transfer per hour |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 Mbps | 1,500,000 bits/second × 3,600 ÷ 8 | 675 MB |
| 2 Mbps | 2,000,000 bits/second × 3,600 ÷ 8 | 900 MB |
675–900 MB per hour is an estimate, not Spotify’s fixed Lossless usage promise. Actual consumption varies with the track’s encoding, network behavior, buffering, and whether the app is streaming continuously. Nevertheless, the range shows why Lossless can use several times more cellular data than Very High.

- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Putting the numbers into a monthly plan
At roughly one hour a day for 30 days, the published Very High calculation is about 4.3 GB (144 MB × 30). Applying the recommended Lossless-rate estimate to the same listening schedule gives approximately 20.25–27 GB. Two hours a day doubles those figures. These are planning illustrations, not carrier bills: your actual total depends on pauses, cached material, advertising or other app traffic, and the stream’s changing data rate.
What this means for mobile plans
- An hour of Very High is roughly 144 MB from the published bitrate calculation.
- An hour of Lossless could approach the 675–900 MB range when the recommended bandwidth is sustained.
- Several hours of daily Lossless listening can consume a large portion of a capped monthly allowance.
- Download albums or playlists over Wi-Fi when you need offline playback and want to avoid cellular charges.
- Check your carrier’s measurement period and overage rules; Spotify cannot determine whether your plan charges by decimal or binary units.
Spotify lets you set streaming and download quality independently for Wi-Fi and cellular connections. That separation is useful: you can keep Lossless for home Wi-Fi while selecting Very High for mobile data, or use Lossless downloads made on Wi-Fi without allowing the app to stream it over cellular.
Download storage is a separate trade-off
Lossless downloads generally require more local storage than Very High downloads because the files retain more source information. Spotify does not publish one universal Lossless megabytes-per-hour download figure in the cited guidance, so do not treat the streaming estimate as a guaranteed file size. Instead, watch the storage indicator in Spotify, download a representative album, and leave free space for app caches and other content.
Why ordinary Bluetooth is not lossless
Spotify says Bluetooth does not provide enough bandwidth for transmitting its Lossless signal without compression. The app may be set to Lossless, but the signal is compressed before it reaches ordinary Bluetooth headphones or speakers. In that setup, the end-to-end path is not lossless.
This limitation applies to the connection method, not merely to the quality setting. A phone can receive a Lossless stream, decode it, and then send a separately compressed Bluetooth signal. Buying a Bluetooth product that advertises high-resolution support does not change Spotify’s stated limitation for its lossless stream.
Connections that preserve the intended path
- Wired headphones: connect directly to the playback device, using the device’s compatible headphone output or an appropriate digital-to-analog adapter.
- Wired speakers or an amplifier: use a cable-based output from the source device or a compatible audio component.
- Non-Bluetooth Spotify Connect: send playback over the network to a selected Spotify Connect device that supports Lossless. Not every Connect endpoint necessarily supports the feature.
Spotify’s published recommendation is to use Wi-Fi with wired headphones or speakers, or a non-Bluetooth connection such as Spotify Connect, for the smoothest and best Lossless experience. This recommendation appeared with Spotify’s 2025 lossless rollout; Spotify VP of Subscriptions Gustav Gyllenhammar described the launch by saying, “The wait is finally over; we’re so excited lossless sound is rolling out to Premium subscribers.”

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does a USB adapter make Bluetooth lossless?
No. A USB digital-to-analog adapter can provide a useful wired output from a phone, tablet, or computer, but it does not remove compression if the final leg is still Bluetooth. To preserve the intended path, connect the adapter to wired headphones, an amplifier, or speakers. If you use a wireless receiver after the adapter, that receiver remains a Bluetooth link and the complete chain is not lossless.
Compatibility and software requirements
Lossless is offered to Premium listeners in supported mobile, desktop, and tablet apps, plus selected third-party Spotify Connect devices. Spotify’s support information lists these minimum app versions:
| Platform | Minimum version listed by Spotify | Additional condition |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile app | 9.0.58 or later | Premium account, supported device, and a compatible playback route |
| Desktop app | 1.2.67 or later | Premium account, supported computer, and a compatible playback route |
| Tablet app | Supported app release | Premium account and compatible hardware; the cited support information does not state a separate tablet number |
| Third-party Spotify Connect device | Device support varies | Only selected Connect products support Lossless |
Meeting the app-version requirement does not guarantee lossless playback through every output. Spotify also identifies network stability, sufficient bandwidth, the original recording, device compatibility, and the connection method as factors that affect the result.

How to check before troubleshooting sound
- Open Spotify and sign in to a Premium account.
- Update the mobile, desktop, or tablet app through the device’s normal app-update mechanism.
- In Spotify, open Settings, then Media Quality.
- Look for the Lossless option in the available streaming and download-quality controls. If it is absent, check the account type, app version, region or rollout status, and whether the device is supported.
- Check the output route separately. A wired connection or an eligible non-Bluetooth Spotify Connect endpoint is required if your goal is to retain the lossless path.
Why the option may not appear immediately
Lossless availability depends on the account, app release, supported hardware, and Spotify’s rollout status. A current app alone is not proof that every account or region has access. Confirm Premium status, install the latest available release, sign out and back in if necessary, and check Spotify’s current support information for your device. Avoid assuming that a high-resolution phone, DAC, or speaker automatically makes an unsupported Spotify Connect endpoint eligible.
How to configure Lossless without wasting mobile data
The safest setup is to treat Wi-Fi streaming, cellular streaming, and downloads as separate decisions rather than selecting one quality level everywhere.
- Go to Settings > Media Quality.
- Set Wi-Fi streaming to Lossless if your home or office connection is stable and your playback equipment can use the signal.
- Set cellular streaming to Very High when your plan is capped or when you normally listen through Bluetooth.
- Set download quality to Lossless only if you have enough device storage and intend to download over Wi-Fi.
- Connect to Wi-Fi before starting large downloads. Confirm that the download has completed before leaving the network.
- For critical listening, connect wired headphones, wired speakers, or a supported non-Bluetooth Spotify Connect device before pressing play.
If a setting is unavailable or playback falls back, update the app, verify Premium status, reconnect to a stable network, and test the same track through a wired route. Do not use Bluetooth playback as proof that Spotify’s Lossless stream is reaching the headphones unchanged.
What equipment can reveal the difference?
The recording comes first
Lossless preserves the data Spotify receives; it cannot restore information removed before that file reached Spotify. A recording made or mastered with limited dynamics, heavy processing, or an already compressed source may not reveal a meaningful difference when compared with Very High.
Headphones and speakers
Use equipment capable of resolving small changes in detail and dynamics, but do not assume that a higher price automatically makes Lossless audible. Fit, frequency response, distortion, room placement, and the listener’s environment matter. A noisy commute is a poor test environment even with excellent headphones.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

With wired listening, the source device, any USB or headphone adapter, amplifier, cable connection, and transducer all form the playback chain. A weak link can dominate the result. Spotify’s Lossless setting only addresses the stream before it enters that chain.
Bluetooth listening
Bluetooth can still sound very good, and Very High is generally an appropriate quality setting for it. The important distinction is that Bluetooth’s own compression means the complete route is not lossless, regardless of the setting selected in Spotify.
A fair listening comparison
- Use the same album version and the same playback device for both settings.
- Listen in a quiet location and match volume carefully; a louder sample is often mistaken for a better one.
- Use a wired route or an eligible non-Bluetooth Spotify Connect device for the Lossless test.
- Compare familiar passages with vocals, cymbals, acoustic instruments, and quiet fades.
- Repeat the test on several recordings rather than judging the format from one master.
If the difference remains subtle or inaudible, that is a valid result. The practical value of Lossless may be its technical preservation and your preference for a wired listening setup, not an obvious change on every song.
Choosing between Very High and Lossless
| Your situation | Recommended setting | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Daily Bluetooth earbuds or portable speaker use | Very High | The Bluetooth leg compresses the signal, so Lossless cannot remain lossless end to end. |
| Limited cellular data | Very High on cellular; Lossless on Wi-Fi if desired | Very High is about 144 MB per hour from the published bitrate calculation, while Lossless can be far higher. |
| Premium account, stable home Wi-Fi, wired headphones | Lossless | This combination matches Spotify’s recommended route and gives the stream its best chance of being preserved. |
| Premium account with a compatible non-Bluetooth Spotify Connect device | Lossless, if the endpoint supports it | Network delivery avoids the ordinary Bluetooth bandwidth limitation. |
| Older app or unsupported Connect hardware | Very High | Update or replace the unsupported part before expecting Lossless. |
| Storage-constrained phone or tablet | Very High downloads, or Lossless only for selected albums | Lossless downloads require more space; the exact size depends on the tracks and encoding. |
| Long listening sessions on a metered hotspot | Very High | The lower published bitrate reduces the risk of exhausting the hotspot allowance. |
| Quiet room and detailed wired system | Lossless | This is the situation most likely to expose differences between a preserved FLAC stream and lossy compression. |
Common problems and practical fixes
“I selected Lossless, but Bluetooth still sounds the same”
That behavior is expected under Spotify’s stated Bluetooth limitation. Switch to wired headphones or speakers, or test a supported non-Bluetooth Spotify Connect device. Changing only the Spotify quality menu cannot remove compression from the Bluetooth leg.

“Lossless keeps buffering”
Check Wi-Fi stability and available bandwidth first. Spotify recommends 1.5–2 Mbps for the best Lossless experience, but a connection can still stall because of congestion, weak signal, router problems, or other traffic. Move closer to the access point, pause competing downloads, or temporarily select Very High to reduce the stream requirement.
“The Lossless option is missing”
- Confirm that the account is Premium.
- Update the mobile app to version 9.0.58 or later, or the desktop app to version 1.2.67 or later, where those requirements apply.
- Check whether the feature has reached your account and region.
- Verify that the device and Spotify Connect endpoint are among the supported products.
“Downloads are using too much storage”
Lossless files are larger than Very High files because less source information is discarded. Review download quality in Settings > Media Quality, remove albums you no longer need offline, and reserve Lossless downloads for music you regularly play on a compatible wired or Connect setup.
“I cannot hear a difference”
That does not necessarily indicate a malfunction. Compare the same master at a comfortable, consistent volume in a quiet environment, then consider the recording, your equipment, and the connection path. If you normally use Bluetooth or listen in a noisy place, Very High may already be the practical choice.
“My internet speed test is fast, but playback still stutters”
A speed-test peak does not guarantee a steady stream. Wi-Fi interference, distance from the router, congestion, and other household traffic can interrupt playback. Test near the access point, pause large transfers, and try a wired connection from the playback device. If Very High plays reliably while Lossless does not, the issue is likely sustained stability or available bandwidth rather than the nominal maximum speed.

It may improve the quality of the stream before Bluetooth, but Spotify says the Bluetooth transmission itself is compressed. Therefore, Lossless does not make that speaker an end-to-end lossless system. Very High is normally the more efficient choice unless you will switch the speaker to a wired or eligible Spotify Connect path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Cost and value considerations
Lossless does not create a separate equipment requirement for every listener, but it can change your practical costs. Premium access is required, cellular overages may matter on a capped plan, and larger downloads use more storage. The right comparison is therefore not only “which sounds better?” but also “which setting fits the way I pay for connectivity and hardware?”
For a listener who already owns wired headphones, has uncapped home Wi-Fi, and spends most listening time at home, Lossless may add little ongoing expense beyond Premium. For someone using metered mobile data or Bluetooth earbuds, Very High can avoid data charges while delivering excellent sound. There is no universal monetary saving because carrier rates, storage prices, and existing equipment differ.
If you are buying equipment specifically for Lossless, prioritize a reliable wired output or a Spotify Connect-compatible device whose Lossless support is confirmed. Do not pay extra solely for a “high-resolution Bluetooth” label when your goal is Spotify’s end-to-end lossless path.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Spotify Lossless worth it over Very High?
It is worthwhile when you have Premium, stable Wi-Fi, and wired or eligible non-Bluetooth Spotify Connect equipment, especially for critical listening. The audible improvement is not guaranteed on every recording or in every environment, so Very High remains a sensible everyday choice.
How much data does Spotify Lossless use per hour?
Spotify does not publish one fixed Lossless MB-per-hour figure. Its recommended 1.5–2 Mbps connection corresponds to roughly 675–900 MB per hour if that rate were sustained. Actual usage varies with encoding, buffering, and network behavior.
Can I hear Spotify Lossless over Bluetooth?
Spotify says ordinary Bluetooth does not have enough bandwidth for lossless transmission, so the signal is compressed before reaching Bluetooth headphones or speakers. Use wired equipment or a supported non-Bluetooth Spotify Connect route for the intended lossless path.
