Before accepting a sportsbook promotion, find out what balance the rollover applies to, calculate the total wagering required, note every deadline, and confirm which bets count. The headline bonus alone does not tell you whether the offer is worth accepting: its specific terms and your location determine how it works.
What sportsbook bonus terms mean
A sportsbook promotion is conditional value, not automatically withdrawable cash. Its terms explain who can use it, what must happen before promotional funds or winnings can be redeemed or withdrawn, which wagers qualify, and what happens if the offer is cancelled or expires. Read the live terms attached to the specific offer in your account and location; promotions and rules can differ by operator and jurisdiction.

“Rollover,” “playthrough,” and “wagering requirement” refer to the amount of betting required under an offer before the relevant promotional balance or winnings can be withdrawn. The multiple by itself is not enough to calculate that amount: first identify its base.

How to calculate the rollover amount
Check whether the multiplier applies to the bonus only, the deposit only, or the deposit and bonus combined. The Danish Gambling Authority illustrates why that distinction matters with a DKK 100 deposit, a DKK 100 bonus, and a 10-times requirement:
#1 Best Overall
| Requirement base | Calculation | Amount to wager |
|---|---|---|
| Bonus only | DKK 100 bonus × 10 | DKK 1,000 |
| Deposit plus bonus | (DKK 100 deposit + DKK 100 bonus) × 10 | DKK 2,000 |
These are the authority’s explanatory figures, not a standard for every sportsbook or a statement of what another country’s law permits. The difference is material: the same “10 times” headline can mean twice as much wagering when the deposit is included. The Danish Gambling Authority’s guidance on offers, bonuses and playthrough requirements explains the calculation.
What to check about expiration
Find the dates and times that apply to the promotion and what must be completed by each one. An offer may state when it is active and when it expires; inspect its terms for any separate deadline to accept, use the bonus, or finish the wagering requirement. Do not assume these are universal deadlines or that completing one automatically satisfies another.
Rank #2
Ohio’s promotion rule requires the offer rules to state when a promotion is active and when it expires, as well as relevant wagering and redemption requirements. That is an Ohio requirement, not a guarantee about disclosures or deadlines everywhere. Ohio Administrative Code Rule 3775-16-09, effective October 26, 2024, sets out the state’s promotion requirements.
Which bets count as eligible
“Eligible bets” are the events or wagers that the particular promotion allows to count toward its requirements. There is no single universal list of qualifying markets. Locate the offer’s description of eligible events and wagers, then check every stated limitation before placing a bet.
Rank #3
- Which sport, event, market, or wager type is included?
- Is there a minimum odds requirement or a limit on stake size?
- How are void, cancelled, or unsettled bets treated?
- Does a cash stake count, a bonus stake count, or both?
These are questions to verify in the offer, not restrictions that apply to every promotion. Ohio requires eligible events or wagers and applicable limitations to be stated in promotion rules; its rule does not make one set of bets eligible everywhere.
Other restrictions that affect the offer
Read the terms beyond the rollover headline. In particular, look for:
- Eligibility: who may claim the promotion and any account, location, or other conditions.
- Redemption and withdrawal: what must be completed before promotional funds or winnings can be withdrawn.
- Cancellation: how cancelling or opting out affects the promotion and any balance involved.
- Your own funds: whether and how the offer affects money you deposited, separately from promotional funds.
Ohio’s rule lists eligibility, redemption or withdrawal conditions, cancellation, and eligible wagers among the matters its promotion rules must address. The exact conditions for an offer depend on its terms and jurisdiction.

Labels such as “free” and “risk-free” should not substitute for reading the conditions. Ohio’s rule states: “Promotions or bonuses described as free or risk-free must not require the patron to incur any loss or risk their own money to use or withdraw winnings from the free wager.” This is a requirement in Ohio Administrative Code Rule 3775-16-09; do not assume the same legal definition applies in other locations.

How to compare two promotions
Compare the full terms side by side rather than ranking offers by the advertised bonus or rollover multiple alone. Record these details for each one:
| Comparison point | What to write down |
|---|---|
| Rollover | The multiple and whether it applies to the deposit, bonus, or both. |
| Wagering amount | The calculated total required, using the stated base. |
| Deadlines | Active dates, expiry, and any acceptance, use, or completion deadline in the terms. |
| Qualifying bets | Eligible events and wager types, plus stated odds, stake, or settlement limits. |
| Eligibility | Who can claim the promotion and any account or location restrictions. |
| Redemption and cancellation | Withdrawal conditions and what cancellation changes, including the treatment of your own funds. |
If a term is unclear or the required wagering amount cannot be calculated from the offer text, get clarification from the operator before opting in. The UK Gambling Commission’s glossary of terms for fair and transparent practices also describes promotion conditions such as time limits, qualification, maximum stake size, and wagering requirements.
Denmark-specific playthrough rules
The Danish Gambling Authority says Danish legislation caps a playthrough requirement at 10 times and requires games eligible toward that requirement to contribute 100 percent. These are Denmark-specific rules, not general sportsbook standards. For an offer in another jurisdiction, consult the applicable local rules and the promotion’s terms.
