Choose Splinter Cell if you want to play a covert operative, prioritize stealth and infiltration, and follow Sam Fisher. Choose Ghost Recon if you want tactical military shooting built around an elite squad, especially in the expansive open worlds of recent entries such as Wildlands and Breakpoint. The best fit depends on the specific game: neither franchise follows one formula in every installment.
What is the main difference between Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon?
The simplest distinction is the role you play. Splinter Cell centers on Sam Fisher, a covert operative, and is the stealth-first option. Ghost Recon focuses on an elite military unit and tactical shooter play. Ubisoft describes Splinter Cell as a stealth shooter and its first game as “cinematic stealth action”; its Splinter Cell series page is a useful overview of that identity.

Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon series page describes the more recent Wildlands and Breakpoint entries as moving the series into vast open worlds. That makes Ghost Recon a natural choice if you want to move through large environments while handling tactical combat, rather than approaching missions primarily as covert infiltration.

| If you want… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| To sneak, infiltrate, and play as a covert agent | Splinter Cell | Its defining identity is stealth action centered on Sam Fisher. |
| To lead or operate as part of a tactical military squad | Ghost Recon | The series centers on an elite military unit and tactical shooter play. |
| To explore a large environment with weapons, vehicles, and drones | Ghost Recon Wildlands | Ubisoft described its setting as an open-world, Bolivia-inspired environment for a four-player special-operations unit. |
| To play online co-op or multiplayer in a particular older game | Check that exact game first | Some older online modes are no longer available or supported. |
The table describes franchise tendencies, not guarantees about every entry. A particular game’s mechanics, modes, and world structure can differ, so choose by the specific title and edition if you have a feature in mind.

Which games make good starting points?
For stealth: Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Blacklist
Blacklist is a later-series example of the covert-agent premise, with gadgets and stealth-action positioning. Ubisoft lists editions for PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U on its Blacklist game page. Those are historical platform listings, not confirmation of current regional store stock or compatibility with a particular modern system. Ubisoft also states that Blacklist’s online co-op and multiplayer no longer function.
For open-world squad tactics: Ghost Recon Wildlands
Wildlands is a clear example of the series’ open-world direction. In its announcement, Ubisoft described a four-player special-operations unit operating in a Bolivia-inspired open world, with weapons, vehicles, and drones. It is the more relevant starting point if that combination of squad play and broad exploration is what you want.

- Incredible real movement and control - you can even shift Sam's weight when preparing him for a split jump between two walls
- Exciting new moves maximize Sam's lethal fighting skills -- spin out of the shadows and kill silently
- All-new moves and levels - fight in jungles, on rooftops, on top of(and under) a moving train
- Advanced AI makes it harder than ever to get past enemies - if you reveal yourself they'll get reinforcements and put on armor
- Weapons now have secondary functions that can be equipped on the fly - be amazed at the advantage you get from the red dot of the laser sight
For an older series comparison: the original Ghost Recon
Ubisoft’s original Ghost Recon page gives a release date of November 13, 2001, lists PC, and classifies the game as shooter, co-op, and multiplayer. That metadata identifies the original release; it does not establish that its old multiplayer remains available today.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat should you check before buying?
- Match the game to the feature. Want a stealth-focused spy, or tactical shooting with a squad? Use the individual game’s description rather than assuming every entry has the same structure.
- Verify platform and edition. Historical platform lists do not guarantee that a copy is currently sold in your region or works on your present system. Check the exact edition and platform listing before purchasing.
- Confirm online modes if they matter. Ubisoft says Blacklist’s co-op and multiplayer no longer function. Its Chaos Theory page and Ghost Recon Future Soldier page also note unavailable or unsupported online features. Do not infer that an older game’s online mode works just because the title is labeled co-op or multiplayer.
Does sales history show which series is more popular?
No fair head-to-head conclusion follows from the available figures. Ubisoft reported in its 2002–2003 financial report that the original Splinter Cell sold 5 million copies worldwide across Xbox, PC, PlayStation 2, and GameCube in its first 10 months. That is a historical company-reported figure for one game, not current sales data and not a comparable statistic for Ghost Recon. It cannot establish which franchise is more popular now.
