A near miss is not assigned one national reporting procedure in the official guidance cited here, and reporting does not guarantee an investigation or follow-up. Explain what happened and use local police guidance. If the driver is still an immediate threat, treat the situation as urgent and call 000.

What to tell police
Once you are safe, record the details while they are fresh. - When: the date and approximate time.
- Where: road name, direction of travel, nearest intersection or landmark, and state or territory.
- Which vehicle: registration if observed, plus make, model, colour, or other identifying details.
- What it did: describe visible actions such as tailgating, running a red light, speeding, or erratic driving. South Australia Police also lists burnouts, donuts, and snaking as examples.
- What made it dangerous: explain how the incident created a risk or caused a near miss, and whether anyone was injured or property was damaged.
- Who else saw it: provide witness names and contact details if they are willing to share them.
- Evidence: say whether you have original footage and ask how to provide it through an approved channel.

Keep yourself safe while reporting
- Do not handle a phone or try to record while driving. Stop somewhere safe before calling or submitting a report.
- Do not follow, confront, or approach a dangerous driver to get identifying details or footage.
- If there is immediate danger, prioritize getting to safety and contacting emergency services over gathering evidence.

South Australia
South Australia Police accepts dangerous-driving reports by calling 131 444, attending a police station, or using its Traffic Watch online service. Call 000 for an emergency. Be ready to give incident timing and location, vehicle details, observed behaviour, and witness contacts; the police page says reporters should be prepared to provide their own name and contact details. The state government also advises witnesses to report promptly and note the location, vehicle, behaviour, and time. Call 000 for an emergency or life-threatening situation. For dangerous driving happening now, or an incident without footage, Tasmania Police says to stop driving and call 131 444. For an earlier incident with digital evidence, use its secure police portal and include the footage’s capture date, time, location, and registration if known. The portal permits trimming a clip to the relevant driving but says not to convert or edit the file. Police say an officer will contact the submitter if they determine that the footage shows an actionable offence; that does not mean every submission will receive contact. Can you send dashcam or phone footage?
Use only footage already obtained safely, and submit it through a police-approved channel. Tasmania Police accepts digital evidence for earlier incidents through its secure portal and gives specific instructions not to convert or edit the video, although trimming to the relevant driving is allowed.
