Start with the Switch’s connection test, then change one thing at a time and test again. Nintendo identifies slow internet service, network equipment problems, weak or interfered-with Wi-Fi, and bandwidth use by other devices as common causes of slow downloads. The console’s test gives you a useful baseline, but it cannot guarantee the speed a particular game download will maintain.
1. Check the Switch’s connection speed
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Internet, then Test Connection.
- Note the reported download speed so you can compare it with results after each change.
The test also checks whether the console can reach Nintendo’s services. Nintendo Support lists 3 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload as recommended comparison figures for troubleshooting; they are not a promise that game downloads will run at those speeds. Nintendo’s slow-download troubleshooting guide names internet service speed, network equipment, Wi-Fi signal or interference, and other devices’ bandwidth use among common causes.

2. Improve Wi-Fi conditions
Test near the router
Temporarily move the console close to the router. Keep it away from metal objects and other electronics that could obstruct or interfere with the signal. Run the connection test again and compare the result with your baseline.

If your router provides both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, connect to the other band and test again. Which one works better depends on the router, distance, walls, and interference in your home; neither band is automatically faster in every location.

Reduce network congestion
Pause bandwidth-heavy activity on other devices while testing, such as large downloads or streaming. If the Switch’s result improves, congestion may be contributing to the slowdown. Change one condition at a time where practical so you can identify what helped.
3. Use Ethernet to check whether Wi-Fi is the bottleneck
If your Switch dock has a built-in LAN port, connect it to the router with an Ethernet cable. A dock without a built-in LAN port requires a USB LAN adapter for a wired internet connection, according to Nintendo Support. Check that an adapter works with your specific Switch model and dock before buying one.

Run the connection test over the wired connection and compare it with Wi-Fi. A better wired result points to Wi-Fi conditions as a likely factor; it does not establish that an adapter will make every download faster.

4. If a download stalls in Sleep Mode
A download that fails to progress only while the console sleeps calls for a different check than a download that is consistently slow. For wireless use, make sure the console stays within router range and that metal or electronic equipment is not obstructing the signal. For a wired connection, check the console’s Sleep Mode setting for the option to maintain the internet connection.

If the download still does not progress, wake the console and try completing it while the system is awake. Nintendo’s guidance for downloads that stop in Sleep Mode covers these checks.
5. Restart network equipment and know when to escalate
Power-cycle the modem and router following Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance, then run the Switch connection test again. If results remain unusually low or below Nintendo’s stated troubleshooting recommendations, contact your network administrator or internet service provider. Share the console’s test results and explain whether a wired test differed from Wi-Fi; that helps narrow down whether the issue is local wireless coverage or the internet service.

Changes that are not established speed fixes
Nintendo’s cited troubleshooting guidance does not establish DNS changes, MTU adjustments, disabling IPv6, opening and closing a game, or using Sleep Mode as general ways to increase download speed. Avoid treating these as proven speed hacks; use the official connection, Wi-Fi, wired-network, and Sleep Mode checks above to diagnose the actual symptom.
