To build local search with Gemini on Google Cloud, ground place-related answers in Google Maps, then separate place discovery from route planning and any application-specific search. Maps grounding supplies geographic context; it is not an index of your private documents or your own search service. Choose a custom search API or Agent Search for those sources, and make the evidence behind generated answers visible when your interface supports it.
What Maps grounding contributes
Google Maps grounding connects Gemini to Google Maps geospatial data so an application can answer with local context. Google says the data covers over 250 million places; the cited page does not state a publication year. This makes Maps grounding suitable for questions that depend on places and their geographic context, not for searching an application’s private corpus.

The API representation for Maps grounding includes place information such as names, addresses, and reviews, along with source details and URIs. The Vertex AI API reference and Grounding API documentation describe these chunks as source material for generated answers. Where the product experience permits, show this source context so users can inspect what supports an answer.

Grounding is not a guarantee that every detail is correct or current. Treat hours, availability, and other changeable place information as potentially subject to change; do not suggest that your application independently verified them unless it actually did.

- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
Structure the local-search experience by task
Google’s Maps reference architecture separates responsibilities among an orchestrator, a Places agent, a Routes agent, and a Schedule agent. The pattern is useful because discovering a place, planning travel, and coordinating a calendar are different tasks with different inputs and outputs.
- Orchestrator: interprets the user’s request, delegates the parts that need place or route information, and combines the results into a response. It should communicate limitations rather than filling gaps with unsupported claims.
- Places agent: handles place discovery and place-status questions using Maps context.
- Routes agent: handles distances and travel planning separately from place selection.
- Schedule agent: is relevant only when the task also involves a calendar or scheduling action.
For a simpler local-search application, the reference design is not a required deployment blueprint. You can keep the same separation of concerns without adopting every example component. The architecture guide’s example uses Gemini Enterprise, ADK, Google Maps Platform, Calendar, Cloud Logging, and Firestore; Calendar and a dedicated scheduling agent, for example, are unnecessary if users only search for places. See Google’s Maps-grounded agent architecture for the full reference pattern.

Choose the grounding source that matches the data
Maps, Google Search, and application-controlled retrieval solve different problems. Select the source based on what the answer needs to know rather than treating them as interchangeable indexes.

| Grounding option | Best fit | Retrieval and evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps | Place and geographic context | Google-managed Maps retrieval; place and source chunks can include names, addresses, reviews, and URIs. |
| Google Search | Public web information | Google-managed web retrieval. See Google Search grounding documentation. |
| Custom search API | An existing application-owned search service or content collection | Your endpoint controls retrieval and returns snippets and URIs. The integration contract is described in Google’s custom search API guide. |
| Agent Search | Private website or document data | Retrieves from the configured data source as a retrieval-augmented generation path. See Agent Search grounding documentation. |
Google documents combining Maps grounding with Google Search and data grounding, but supported tool combinations depend on the specific API surface. Check the current Grounding API guidance for the request configuration you plan to use.
Connect a custom search API when your own content matters
If the application already has a proprietary search service, Google’s Vertex AI guide describes a custom endpoint pattern: Gemini sends a POST request containing a query, and the endpoint returns a JSON array of results with snippet and uri fields. The returned snippets are the content Gemini can use as grounding material, while the URIs provide source links for the experience you build.
Design the endpoint response for useful, concise snippets and make latency and error handling part of the integration. A failed or slow search call should not silently become an apparently grounded answer; define how the application reports the unavailable source or falls back. The guide’s stated prerequisites include an enabled Vertex AI API and a compatible endpoint contract, but do not establish every deployment prerequisite. Consult the live custom search API documentation for implementation details.

Plan for operations, governance, and changing details
Agent design affects both reliability and operating cost. Keep each component’s responsibility narrow, avoid unnecessary lookups, and monitor events and outputs. Google’s architecture guidance recommends caching frequently requested data, including common routes and popular places, to reduce API calls. Apply caching with care: information that changes can become stale, so define what may be cached and for how long based on the needs of the feature.
Set governance and monitoring expectations for the data your agents retrieve and the responses they produce. Supported models, availability, quotas, regional support, and pricing can change; confirm the current Google Cloud documentation and pricing for your intended project and deployment rather than assuming a general figure or region applies.
