Speed Up CS Grading Without Giving Up Instructor Judgment

CscGrader is described as automating batch project runs and evidence capture; generateRubrics prepares named copies of a master rubric. Both leave assessment to instructors.

CscGrader and generateRubrics tackle two repetitive parts of computer science grading: running student projects and preparing individualized rubric files. CscGrader is described as collecting execution evidence in batches; generateRubrics copies a master rubric into separately named files from a roster. Neither replaces an instructor’s assessment of code quality, design, or feedback.

What can these tools take off an instructor’s plate?

They address different stages of the grading workflow. CscGrader is intended to compile and run student projects with predefined inputs, then capture outputs and execution details. generateRubrics prepares a copy of a rubric for each student. Used together, they can organize mechanical work and evidence; instructors still interpret that evidence and evaluate the work.

What CscGrader does

Project author Johnny Santamaria describes CscGrader as language-agnostic software that finds student projects, compiles and runs them, and records standard output, standard error, exit codes, and timing. The described workflow uses an assignment profile in JSON and a batch command to process a submissions folder; results are saved as structured JSON evidence. These are features reported in the author’s account, not independently verified testing. Read the project author’s description.

This makes CscGrader most relevant when many submissions need the same mechanical execution steps and common inputs. Captured output can help an instructor inspect what happened during a run, but it is not itself a complete grade. The author frames the tool’s role as the “collection of evidence” phase; code quality, design, and feedback remain human work.

What generateRubrics does—and does not do

generateRubrics reads a student-name list and copies a master rubric into a separately named file for each student. Its repository documentation lists .xlsx, .csv, .pdf, and other file formats, and says it works on macOS, Linux, and Windows. The project describes copying as binary file handling that needs no Python libraries, so an existing Excel rubric can be copied without openpyxl. These are project-reported capabilities, not independently tested results. See the generateRubrics repository documentation.

The author’s example takes a roster text file, a master rubric, and an assignment number, and creates a Rubrics/ output folder. The repository also documents an output-folder argument. Because command-line syntax and options can change, check the repository’s current instructions before running it. The utility copies and renames files; it does not create rubric criteria, fill in an evaluation, or grade submissions.

What the evidence does not establish

The projects’ descriptions explain intended functions, but they do not establish measured time savings, performance benchmarks, adoption rates, or a controlled comparison with another grading workflow. The author’s mention of a 150-student class is an illustrative scenario, not a statistic about typical class size or a measured result.

A practical way to apply semi-automation

  1. Separate the repetitive tasks. Decide whether the main bottleneck is executing many projects, preparing individualized rubric files, or both.
  2. Keep evaluation criteria explicit. Use a rubric that captures the qualities instructors need to judge; copying a file does not create or validate those criteria.
  3. Review the collected evidence. Treat automated runs as inputs to assessment. Check relevant output and execution details, then make and explain qualitative judgments yourself.
  4. Verify project details before adopting. Read current repository instructions and confirm compatibility, maintenance, and licensing rather than assuming the descriptions reflect current releases.
