Letter Buddy is a project intended to help Telugu speakers understand English-language insurance, banking, pension, and utility letters. It takes a photo or PDF, extracts details such as dates and amounts, and produces a plain-Telugu explanation with an optional read-aloud feature. Its builder describes the normal workflow as local, without a cloud AI API—but the available account is a builder’s submission, not an independent evaluation.
What Letter Buddy is meant to do
Builder Sricharan Resmai says he created Letter Buddy for a neighbor who needed help interpreting official documents written in English. The tool is designed to answer a practical question: “What is this letter saying, what do I need to do, and by when?” It aims to explain the document’s contents, identify any stated action, and surface dates or amounts in Telugu.

It is a document explainer, not a professional adviser. Resmai states: “It does not give advice.” For consequential decisions, the project calls for review by a trusted person or an appropriate qualified professional.
How the described workflow works
Resmai describes a sequence that starts with a phone photo or PDF and ends with a Telugu explanation and, if wanted, spoken output. The application is described as running on a laptop, with a phone browser connecting over the same local network.

- Prepare the document image. Image preprocessing is intended to correct orientation and skew and improve noise and contrast.
- Read the text with OCR. The current setup uses Tesseract through PyTesseract. The builder says the system can reject poor-quality OCR and ask for a better image.
- Extract important details in ordinary code. The application identifies candidate dates, amounts, phone numbers, email addresses, URLs, and reference numbers from the recognized text.
- Generate a constrained explanation. The builder names Ollama and Qwen2.5:3b for local model execution. In the described design, the model refers to pre-extracted candidate IDs instead of inventing dates or amounts; checks are intended to reject unknown IDs and compare values with OCR text.
- Present the result in Telugu. The application is described as producing a large-text letter card and an offline read-aloud option using eSpeak NG’s Telugu voice.
This separation between extraction and explanation matters: a language model can make mistakes even when asked to summarize a document. Constraining it to extracted candidates is a reported safeguard, not proof that every important fact will be detected or explained correctly.
What “offline” means here—and what it does not prove
The project’s stated goal is to process a letter locally without sending it to a cloud AI API. Resmai describes a local endpoint, loopback-oriented binding, a network guard, a Forget action, and cleanup. The post says the Python-level network guard covers Python sockets specifically; it does not establish that all network behavior has been independently audited or that the application has been verified against every possible route for data to leave a device. Treat “offline” as the builder’s intended and reported design, not as an independently certified privacy guarantee.

The submission also describes protections against prompt injection embedded in documents, unsupported candidate IDs, ungrounded numbers, and advice-like responses. Its synthetic checks are reported by the builder; independent adversarial testing is not established. A Forget control and cleanup are useful design features, but they do not by themselves demonstrate how every copy of a document is handled in actual use.
What the reported tests show
Resmai reports OCR word-error-rate results on a synthetic English insurance-letter sample. These are the builder’s measurements for that sample, not independent results or a forecast for other documents.

The builder says these results led to using English-only OCR for English documents rather than automatically enabling multiple OCR languages. They do not establish performance on Telugu source documents, handwriting, stamps, different letter layouts, or photos with shadows and blur.
The submission also reports 61 passes, 0 failures, 0 warnings, and 8 manual checks remaining, along with 100% extraction accuracy on synthetic checks and passing results for several safety and digit-preservation checks. These are project-reported verification outcomes, not an independently audited test suite or evidence of accuracy on real letters. Resmai lists an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop GPU with 6141 MiB of VRAM. System RAM, peak VRAM for a full run, time per letter, and token throughput are not stated.

Limitations and the evidence still missing
- OCR can fail on difficult inputs. The builder identifies handwriting, stamps, shadows, and poor photos as weaknesses. A missed digit or date could change the meaning of a letter.
- Translation and speech quality may be uneven. Resmai says small local models are less fluent than large hosted models, particularly for regional-language translation, and describes the eSpeak NG Telugu voice as robotic.
- High-stakes cases need human review. The design reportedly escalates high-stakes documents and flags suspicious requests involving OTPs, PINs, CVVs, passwords, or urgent payment instructions. The effectiveness of these safeguards on real documents is not established.
- Real-user validation is incomplete in the submission. Sections for a recipient handover, a real letter, user hesitation or feedback, and a Wi-Fi-disabled demo remain placeholders. That means this account does not demonstrate how a recipient handled the tool or confirm the proposed offline demonstration.
The project post identifies a public repository as charan22-eng/letter_buddy_Hacktoberfest-01, but the post alone does not establish the repository’s current state. The available account is best read as a description of a promising engineering prototype with reported synthetic checks, not a demonstrated measure of real-world user effectiveness.
