If Spectrum internet isn’t working, first check for an outage or maintenance affecting your service address. If none is listed, inspect the power and cable connections, then restart supported non-fiber equipment and give it time to reconnect. These checks help distinguish a provider-side interruption from a modem, router, or Wi-Fi problem.
1. Check whether Spectrum reports an outage
Start with Spectrum’s Internet troubleshooting and support options or the My Spectrum app, using the affected service location. Spectrum notes that an outage or maintenance can leave equipment offline, even when the connections in your home have not changed. A general article cannot determine whether service is currently down at your address.

If Spectrum reports an outage, follow its restoration guidance rather than replacing cables or equipment. If no outage is shown, continue with the checks below.
2. Confirm whether you have cable or fiber service
The connection path depends on the service type. With a typical cable setup, coax runs from the wall outlet to the modem, and Ethernet runs from the modem to the router. Spectrum’s self-installation instructions for its Advanced WiFi 6 Router show this arrangement.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Fiber installations use a different path: Spectrum’s fiber connection instructions describe connecting the router to an Ethernet wall plate or the home’s optical network unit (ONU). Spectrum cautions against applying its general manual troubleshooting procedure to fiber equipment. If you have fiber, use the fiber-specific instructions or contact Spectrum rather than unplugging equipment based on cable-modem steps.
3. Check power and physical connections
For a cable setup, check that power cords are firmly seated and that the coax and Ethernet connections have not come loose. The coax should connect the wall outlet to the modem. Ethernet should run from the modem to the router’s Internet port. If you normally connect a computer directly to the modem, check that cable path instead.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Reseat the coax at both the wall outlet and modem.
- Reseat Ethernet at the modem and router, making sure it is in the router’s Internet port.
- Check that the modem and router are powered on.
- If available, test a computer over Ethernet. A working wired connection alongside poor Wi-Fi points toward a wireless-device or coverage issue, rather than proving the cause of the problem.
Do not assume a cable needs replacing just because service is down. Check for an outage and reseat the connections first. Replace an Ethernet cable only if it is visibly damaged or a test points to it as the problem.

Spectrum’s general instructions for internet equipment are to disconnect power, or remove the battery where applicable, wait at least 60 seconds, and reconnect. Do not use this generic manual procedure for fiber equipment; follow the fiber-specific guidance instead.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- Disconnect power from the supported modem and router, or remove a battery if the equipment has one.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the equipment and follow its model-specific startup instructions.
- Wait for the modem and router to finish starting before testing the connection.
Startup time varies by equipment. For the Wi-Fi 6 setup covered in Spectrum’s instructions, the modem may take about two to five minutes to connect, and the router may take up to 10 minutes to show ready status. Those timings apply to that setup guide, not necessarily to every Spectrum model.
5. If the modem is online but Wi-Fi is still poor
Test near the router, restart the device having trouble, and try Ethernet if practical. If a wired connection works but Wi-Fi is weak, check router placement: Spectrum recommends a central location away from household electronics such as microwaves, baby monitors, and wireless headsets. These are useful coverage and interference checks, but they do not identify the cause of every intermittent connection.

6. Contact Spectrum if service does not return
If an outage is listed, use Spectrum’s restoration guidance. If no outage is shown and the supported checks do not restore service, try Spectrum’s Internet troubleshooting page, the My Spectrum app, its virtual agent, or customer support. A continuing problem may need account, line, provisioning, or equipment diagnosis that cannot be established with home checks alone.
