You can create a subreddit on Reddit.com or in the Reddit app. Before you start, settle on a clear purpose, check whether an active community already covers it, and choose a name carefully: Reddit says community names are 3–21 characters and cannot be changed after creation, including capitalization.
Things to know before creating a community
Define its purpose and check for overlap
Write down what the community is for and who it is meant to serve. Search Reddit for communities with a similar focus. Reddit recommends joining and contributing to an existing active community, or asking whether you can help moderate it, rather than creating a duplicate. If you do create a related community, give it a distinct focus. For a similar community that is unmoderated, Reddit points to r/redditrequest.

Choose a name you can live with
Reddit’s current setup guidance requires a name between 3 and 21 characters. It cannot be edited after creation, including its capitalization. Check the spelling and capitalization before submitting; the name becomes part of the community’s identity and URL. Reddit also says communities cannot be deleted once created, so treat creation as a lasting decision.
Decide who can see and take part
Choose public, restricted, or private according to the audience and level of control you need. Reddit documents these differences:

Set the 18+ option when required
If the community’s content will primarily be Not Safe For Work (NSFW), Reddit requires it to be marked 18+. The setting may turn on automatically when you choose an 18+ topic. Reddit warns that failing to mark a primarily NSFW community appropriately can lead to a ban for disregarding the Reddit Rules.

Be ready to moderate
The person who creates the community automatically becomes its top moderator. Reddit advises creators to be willing to moderate and to add moderators if they lack the time or experience to manage it alone. Plan how you will handle rules, reports, and routine upkeep before inviting people in.

- Open the creation flow. On Reddit.com, select Create Community in the left sidebar. In the app, open the community drawer and select Start a Community.
- Enter a name and description. Keep the name within the 3–21 character limit and verify spelling and capitalization, since you cannot change it later. Use the description to state the community’s purpose and vision.
- Add artwork if you want. You can optionally add an avatar or banner.
- Choose topics. Select up to three topics. Reddit uses them to determine what the community is about and connect it with relevant audiences; you can change topics as the community evolves.
- Select a community type. Choose public, restricted, or private based on the visibility and participation rules you decided on.
- Set Mature (18+) if appropriate. Mark the community 18+ if it will primarily host NSFW content. An 18+ topic may enable the toggle automatically.
- Create the community. Once you submit, you become its top moderator.

Explain the community and welcome new members
Use moderation tools to review settings such as the description, community type, post types, discovery, and flair. The description can appear in search results and in the mobile community view, so make its purpose easy to understand. Reddit’s Community Guide can add a welcome message, links, and other context for people arriving for the first time.

Write clear rules
Reddit’s rules tool lets moderators set a rule name, description, report reason, and scope. Make rules specific enough that members know what is allowed and moderators can apply them consistently. Reddit recommends clear names and report reasons, detailed descriptions, a sensible order, and making the rules available in the sidebar. See Reddit’s community rules formatting guidelines.
Use flair to organize participation
User flair can label members, while post flair can categorize content. Consider whether labels will help people find relevant posts or understand each other’s roles, and configure them through the community’s moderation tools.
Balance discoverability with exposure
Discovery settings can affect whether a community appears in high-traffic feeds and whether Reddit recommends it to individual users. Greater exposure can bring many visitors and comments, so consider your moderation capacity and the sensitivity of the subject before enabling it. Reddit specifically suggests that support or identity communities consider turning off discoverability if broad exposure could cause harm or harassment. Discovery may increase visibility; it does not guarantee growth. See Reddit’s discoverability guidance.
Keep the setup focused on the community you intend to run
Use the creation flow to establish the name, purpose, audience, and age setting; then use moderation tools to clarify expectations and manage access and exposure. Because the community name cannot be changed and Reddit says communities cannot be deleted, pause before submitting if the name or purpose is still unsettled.
