Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your speakers are silent, first identify which speakers you’re testing and whether the problem affects one app or all audio. Then check the selected sound output, mute and volume, and the speaker’s power and connection before moving on to software or service. A normal-looking volume icon does not guarantee that sound is routed to the speakers you intend to use.
Start by narrowing down the problem
Note whether there is no sound at all, the sound is quiet or distorted, or only one speaker or channel is silent. Try another known audio source or app. If sound plays from another app, the speakers may be working while the original app, browser tab, or content is muted or has a separate volume control. Apple notes that apps such as music and video players, as well as browser pages, can have their own controls (Apple’s built-in speaker guidance).
- Built-in speakers: troubleshoot the computer’s integrated speakers.
- Wired speakers: check power and the 3.5 mm connection, if that is the connection type.
- USB speakers: check the USB connection and selected output.
- Bluetooth speakers: check both pairing and which device is selected for sound output.
Check mute, volume, and the selected output
Windows 11 and Windows 10
- Open Settings > System > Sound and find Output. Select the speakers you are testing. The exact labels can vary by Windows release.
- Raise the system volume and confirm the selected output is not muted. If available, check the volume mixer for the app you are using.
- If several outputs are listed, select the intended one explicitly. A monitor, headset, USB device, or Bluetooth speaker may be selected instead of the computer speakers.
- If the intended device still produces no sound, use Microsoft’s Windows no-sound troubleshooting steps. They include checking the default playback device, turning off audio enhancements, and running the available troubleshooter.
Also check the speaker’s physical volume knob or buttons and the app’s own volume control. Windows, an app, and an external speaker can each have independent volume or mute settings (Microsoft’s general Windows audio guidance).
Mac built-in speakers
- Open System Settings > Sound > Output and select the built-in speakers.
- Raise Output volume and make sure Mute is off.
- Disconnect headphones, external speakers, audio interfaces, USB audio devices, and displays that could be receiving sound; then test again.
Apple’s built-in speaker guidance recommends selecting the built-in speakers, checking output volume and mute, and testing after disconnecting external audio devices. Menu wording may vary across macOS releases.

- USB-Powered from USB port of PC or Laptop
- In-line volume control for easy access
- Blue LED lights; metal finish and scratch-free padded base
- Bottom radiator for “springy” bass sound
Check the speaker’s power and connection
Wired 3.5 mm speakers
- Turn on the speakers and check their power source if they require one.
- Reseat the cable at both the speaker and computer. Confirm it is connected to an audio output, not a microphone input; some computers label those jacks separately.
- Check that the speaker’s selected source or input matches the connection you are using. If jack labels are unclear, consult the computer or speaker maker’s guidance.
- If a compatible 3.5 mm cable may be faulty, try another one. Logitech includes this step for its Z407 speakers; it is not a general fix for problems caused by routing, mute, power, or failed hardware.
USB speakers
Make sure the USB speakers are selected under the operating system’s sound output settings. Reseat the USB connection and try another USB port. Device-specific requirements can differ, so check the speaker maker’s instructions for any additional power or compatibility steps.
Bluetooth speakers
- Confirm the speaker is selected as the computer’s sound output. Being shown as paired or connected does not prove that audio is routed to it.
- Check the computer’s volume and the speaker’s own controls. Close and reopen the playback app to test again.
- If sound still does not come through, turn Bluetooth off and on, then reconnect. If needed, remove the speaker from the computer’s paired devices and pair it again.
These refresh steps appear in Sony’s guidance for a paired Bluetooth speaker with no sound or reconnection trouble. The precise steps depend on the computer and speaker. On Windows, see Microsoft’s Bluetooth no-sound guidance for output selection and driver or compatibility checks; it also advises checking A2DP support for higher-quality streaming.

If the basic checks do not restore sound
Windows speakers or wired headphones
After confirming the output, mute, volume, and connection, follow Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting guidance. It identifies incorrect output selection, mute, audio enhancements, and driver issues as possible causes, and describes setting a default playback device, disabling enhancements, and using the available troubleshooter. Use the instructions for your Windows release; settings names and locations can change.
Windows Bluetooth audio
Check the selected Bluetooth output first. If that does not help, use Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting steps for applicable driver and compatibility checks. Do not assume a Bluetooth pairing is the same as an active audio route.

These checks are intended to isolate common routing, app, and connection problems—not to diagnose every model or hardware fault. Do not open powered speakers or attempt electrical repairs based on a general guide. If a device-specific support path does not resolve the problem, contact the computer or speaker manufacturer for model-appropriate service advice.
