What was the SpaceX Dragon dome?
SpaceX called the feature a Cupola. It was installed on Crew Dragon Resilience for Inspiration4, a private orbital mission. An Inspiration4 mission-account post, reproduced by Futurism on September 3, 2021, described the Cupola as providing the astronauts with views of Earth from orbit and said the crew had visited the flight hardware in California before it was shipped to Florida for integration with the spacecraft.

The Cupola was a viewing feature, not a destination or a separate spacecraft. The available mission record does not specify its dimensions, glass composition, optical performance, pressure-window design, or engineering loads.

Why did Inspiration4 have a Cupola?
In its 2021 report, Futurism explained that Inspiration4 was not scheduled to dock with the International Space Station, so Dragon did not need its nose-cone docking mechanism for this flight. The article said the resulting space could be used for the viewing feature instead. That arrangement suited a mission whose crew could observe Earth and space from orbit without needing to dock at the station.

Futurism contrasted Dragon’s feature with the ISS Cupola, describing the station’s as having seven reinforced-glass windows and Dragon’s as appearing to be one continuous piece. That is the 2021 article’s description, not an independently verified engineering specification in SpaceX’s mission updates.
Who flew on Inspiration4, and what happened?
SpaceX described Inspiration4 as the world’s first civilian mission to orbit. Its four crew members were commander Jared Isaacman, medical officer Hayley Arceneaux, mission specialist Chris Sembroski, and pilot Sian Proctor. The flight lasted three days. Dragon splashed down off Florida at 7:06 p.m. EDT on September 18, 2021, according to SpaceX’s mission update archive.

Did the Cupola fly again?
SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn mission page says the Dragon spacecraft used for that mission had previously flown Crew-1 and Inspiration4. This confirms that the spacecraft later flew again; it does not establish whether the Cupola itself was reused, removed, or otherwise handled after Inspiration4.
Why does the headline say “next month”?
“Next month” was accurate in the original headline’s September 3, 2021 context, when Inspiration4 was still ahead. The crew returned on September 18, 2021, so the phrase is historical rather than a current schedule announcement.
