SpaceX vs. Tesla: Revenue, Valuation, and Business Models Compared

Tesla reported far more 2025 revenue than SpaceX, but the companies operate in different markets. This comparison explains their revenue mix, launch and Starlink economics, valuation bases and cross-company transactions.

Tesla was the much larger business by reported 2025 revenue. Its SEC filing reports $94.827 billion, compared with $18.674 billion for SpaceX as reported in coverage of SpaceX’s 2026 IPO filing. That makes Tesla’s reported revenue a little over five times SpaceX’s, but the companies earn that revenue from fundamentally different activities: Tesla sells electric vehicles, energy systems and related services, while SpaceX combines rocket launches with Starlink satellite connectivity.

A fair comparison therefore needs three separate lenses: the revenue figures and what they include, each company’s operating model, and the valuation basis. Tesla has a continuously quoted public-market value; SpaceX’s widely reported $1.8–$2.0 trillion figure was an anticipated IPO valuation range, not a verified market capitalization on October 13, 2026.

2025 revenue $94.827 billion, reported in Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K $18.674 billion, reported by coverage of SpaceX’s 2026 IPO filing Same calendar year, but the Tesla figure is directly from a primary filing while the SpaceX figure is secondary reporting.
2025 revenue mix available here Automotive plus services and other: $82.056 billion; energy generation and storage: $12.771 billion No independently accessible segment table in the available filing coverage Do not assign a precise Starlink percentage or launch percentage without the underlying segment disclosure.
Valuation evidence Current market capitalization requires a specified share price date and shares outstanding Approximately $1.8–$2.0 trillion was reported as an anticipated offering range An IPO expectation and a traded market capitalization are different measurements; neither company has a date-matched valuation established here for October 13, 2026.

The Tesla revenue and segment figures come from its 2025 Form 10-K. The SpaceX figure and offering range are attributed to the May 2026 IPO-filing coverage, not presented as independently checked figures from a SpaceX filing.

What the revenue comparison actually measures

Revenue is the amount recognized for goods and services during a reporting period. It is not profit, cash on hand, enterprise value or a direct measure of technological importance. Comparing the two totals is useful for scale, but it does not mean a vehicle sale and a satellite-connectivity subscription have the same cost structure, contract duration or capital requirements.

The available figures also differ in evidence quality. Tesla’s number is in a company-filed annual report available from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. SpaceX’s number was reported from an IPO filing by a contemporary financial publication because the underlying filing was not independently accessible in the source set. That distinction should remain attached whenever the SpaceX total is cited.

How Tesla makes money

Two reportable operating segments

Tesla says its business is organized into automotive and energy generation and storage. Automotive covers the design, development, manufacture, sale and lease of electric vehicles. The company also records regulatory-credit sales and a wide range of services in or alongside the automotive business. Energy generation and storage covers products and related services that Tesla sells, leases or finances.

Tesla 2025 revenue line Reported revenue What it represents
Automotive sales $65.821 billion Vehicle sales recognized during the year.
Automotive regulatory credits $1.993 billion Credits sold to other manufacturers under applicable regulations.
Automotive leasing $1.712 billion Lease-related automotive revenue.
Services and other $12.530 billion Used vehicles, maintenance and collision work, paid Supercharging, insurance, parts, merchandise and other services.
Energy generation and storage $12.771 billion Residential, commercial and utility-scale generation and storage products, including Powerwall and Megapack systems, plus related services.

The line items above are company-reported in Tesla’s 2025 annual filing. Automotive sales revenue decreased 9% year over year, while energy-generation-and-storage revenue increased 27%. Those movements show why a single total can hide different trends inside the business: the vehicle operation and the energy operation were not moving in the same direction.

Automotive: product sales plus an installed ecosystem

Tesla’s core automotive transaction is the sale or lease of an electric vehicle. Around that transaction sits a service network that can generate revenue after delivery. The filing identifies used-vehicle sales, maintenance and collision repairs, paid charging, insurance, parts and merchandise as sources of services-and-other revenue. These activities are commercially connected to the installed vehicle base, but they should not be treated as the same product as a new-car sale.

Tesla generally sells directly to customers and describes its approach as vertically integrated. Direct distribution gives the company control over ordering, delivery and customer data rather than relying on an independent dealer network. Vertical integration can also place manufacturing, software, charging and service decisions under one corporate structure. It does not eliminate commodity, manufacturing, demand or regulatory risk.

Energy generation and storage

The energy segment extends Tesla beyond transportation. Powerwall is aimed at residential storage, while Megapack is designed for utility and industrial deployments. Tesla sells, leases and finances these systems and provides related services. A storage project can involve larger individual contracts and different installation timelines from a vehicle purchase, so segment revenue should be analyzed with its own delivery schedule and customer mix.

Developing initiatives are not established revenue lines

Tesla’s strategy discussions include robotaxi and artificial-intelligence initiatives. Unless a later filing quantifies revenue from those activities, they are plans or developing businesses rather than proven contributors that can be added to the 2025 revenue comparison. Treating a strategic ambition as current revenue would overstate what the filing establishes.

How SpaceX makes money

Launch services

SpaceX earns revenue by providing launch services. Customers pay for access to a launch vehicle and associated mission services, with economics shaped by vehicle production, launch operations, regulatory requirements, mission cadence and the terms of individual contracts. A launch is generally a project transaction rather than a consumer purchase repeated every month.

Starlink connectivity

SpaceX also operates Starlink, a satellite-broadband connectivity business. Its economic engine combines a space-based network with customer terminals, network operations and recurring connectivity charges. This gives SpaceX a service component alongside its launch activity. The two businesses share engineering and infrastructure relationships, but they sell to different customer groups and recognize revenue through different commercial arrangements.

What the available SpaceX evidence does—and does not—show

The reported 2025 consolidated revenue figure is accompanied by a statement that SpaceX had operating losses that year. The available coverage does not provide an independently accessible segment table, so an exact split between launch revenue and Starlink revenue cannot be stated responsibly. Any article or spreadsheet assigning a precise Starlink share without the underlying filing is adding an assumption, not reporting an established figure.

SpaceX’s private-company status also means readers should expect less routine public financial detail than Tesla provides. An IPO filing can introduce more disclosure, but a figure reported from coverage of that filing should still be labeled as secondary until the filing itself is checked.

Why the businesses are not interchangeable

Different customers and purchase cycles

Tesla sells vehicles, charging and maintenance-related services to consumers and fleets, and storage systems to households, businesses and utilities. SpaceX sells launch missions to institutional customers and connectivity to Starlink subscribers. A vehicle order can be delivered once, a storage project can be recognized as equipment is installed, and connectivity can produce recurring billing. Combining these transactions into one “Musk company” category would erase the commercial differences that drive revenue quality.

Different asset and capital profiles

Automotive manufacturing requires factories, supply chains, inventory and delivery capacity. Energy projects add cells, power electronics, construction and grid-integration requirements. Launch services require rockets, launch infrastructure, mission assurance and regulatory approvals. Starlink requires satellites, ground systems, user terminals and ongoing network expansion. Revenue scale alone cannot tell you which business is generating better returns on those assets.

Different growth signals

Tesla’s filing gives a direct view of the contrasting 2025 performance of its automotive and energy lines. SpaceX’s available report gives a consolidated total and an operating-loss statement but no verified segment percentages. Therefore, it is reasonable to compare overall reported revenue while not claiming that one company’s segment growth rate is directly comparable with the other’s.

Valuation: establish the basis before comparing a number

Tesla’s public-market value

For a publicly traded company, market capitalization is calculated as the share price at a stated time multiplied by the relevant shares outstanding. The result changes with the share price and can differ depending on whether the calculation uses basic or diluted shares. A valid Tesla valuation comparison therefore needs a date, a closing or intraday price convention, and a clearly defined share count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The figures available for this article do not establish Tesla’s market capitalization on October 13, 2026. It would be misleading to insert an undated web quote or to compare a later Tesla market value with an earlier private-company offering expectation.

SpaceX’s reported IPO expectation

Coverage published in May 2026 described an anticipated SpaceX offering valuation of approximately $1.8–$2.0 trillion. That is an offering target or expectation reported around a filing; it is not proof that shares traded at that value, that the offering closed at that range, or that the company’s October value was the same.

Private-company valuations can also depend on preferred-share rights, liquidation preferences, transfer restrictions and the exact security being priced. A headline valuation is not automatically equivalent to the value of every common share or to the enterprise value used in an analytical model.

Illustrative revenue-multiple calculation

Using the reported SpaceX offering range and its reported 2025 revenue produces an illustrative multiple of roughly 96 to 107 times revenue. This arithmetic is a comparison of a reported expectation with a reported annual total; it is not an intrinsic-value estimate and says nothing by itself about margins, cash flow, dilution or the probability that an offering reaches the stated range.

A comparable Tesla revenue multiple cannot be calculated from the evidence here because a date-matched Tesla market capitalization has not been established. Analysts should use the same valuation date, the same definition of revenue and the same treatment of debt and cash before drawing a multiple-based conclusion.

The financial links between Tesla and SpaceX

Tesla’s investment

Tesla’s second-quarter 2026 filing records a $2.00 billion purchase of SpaceX common stock in March 2026, representing less than 1% ownership. The investment makes the companies financially connected, but the ownership percentage and the transaction terms do not show that Tesla controls SpaceX or that the two businesses have merged.

Megapack sales to SpaceX

The same filing reports $318 million of Tesla revenue from SpaceX in the quarter ended June 30, 2026, and $405 million for the six months ended that date, principally from Megapack purchases. These are related-party sales: SpaceX is a customer for a Tesla energy product, not a new Tesla operating segment. The figures appear in Tesla’s second-quarter 2026 filing.

Earlier related-party transactions

An amended disclosure reports that Tesla received approximately $143.3 million from SpaceX during 2025, primarily for vehicle sales, and incurred approximately $11.4 million in expenses under commercial, licensing and support agreements with SpaceX. Those amounts explain why the relationship is material enough to disclose, but they do not make SpaceX a dominant customer of Tesla when viewed against Tesla’s full-year revenue.

Answering the practical comparison questions

Which company makes more revenue?

Tesla, by a wide margin in the reported 2025 figures. Its total is roughly 5.1 times the SpaceX total, although the evidence quality differs because Tesla’s amount comes from a primary annual filing and SpaceX’s amount comes from IPO-filing coverage.

Does higher revenue mean Tesla is worth more?

No. Valuation reflects expected future cash flows, growth, risk, capital needs, market liquidity and the rights attached to the securities being valued. A private offering expectation can exceed a public company’s value even when the private company has lower current revenue, and the reverse can also occur.

Is SpaceX worth more than Tesla?

The evidence here cannot answer that as of October 13, 2026. The reported SpaceX range is an anticipated offering valuation, while Tesla requires a date-specific public-market capitalization. Without matching dates and valuation bases, a definitive ranking would be false precision.

Can Tesla’s energy business be compared directly with Starlink?

Only at a high conceptual level. Both can involve infrastructure and recurring service relationships, but Tesla reports energy generation and storage as a segment with disclosed revenue, whereas the available SpaceX evidence does not establish Starlink’s exact revenue share. Product type, contract duration, deployment cost and accounting treatment all differ.

A reliable framework for future updates

When new filings or market data become available, use the following sequence:

  1. Fix the date. Use the same fiscal period for revenue and the same market date for both valuations.
  2. Identify the valuation basis. Label each figure as market capitalization, transaction-implied value, enterprise value or IPO offering expectation.
  3. Use primary filings where possible. Keep secondary coverage clearly attributed when the underlying filing is unavailable.
  4. Separate operating segments. Compare Tesla automotive, Tesla energy, SpaceX launch and Starlink only when each segment’s revenue and accounting definitions are disclosed.
  5. Check ownership and related-party notes. Investments and purchases between the companies provide context but do not establish a shared operating model.
  6. Calculate multiples consistently. Match the numerator’s valuation date and security definition with the denominator’s reporting period, and state whether the result uses revenue, operating income or another measure.

Bottom line for readers and investors

Tesla is the larger reported-revenue business and has a disclosed mix spanning vehicles, automotive services, regulatory credits and energy storage. SpaceX is a smaller reported-revenue business in the figures available here, built around launch services and Starlink connectivity, with less segment-level public detail and reported operating losses for 2025.

The headline valuation comparison requires more caution than the revenue comparison. SpaceX’s reported $1.8–$2.0 trillion range describes an anticipated IPO valuation, not a verified October 2026 market price. Tesla’s comparable figure must be calculated from a specified public-market date. The companies’ investment and supplier-customer ties are important context, but they do not turn two distinct operating engines into one business.
