Yes—but with an important qualification. In a public June 2020 Q&A, SpaceX software-team participants said Falcon and Dragon use Linux for flight-software applications and hardware interfaces. They also described custom application software for vehicle control, fault management and computing redundancy. That does not mean Linux by itself is Falcon 9’s flight-control or safety system, nor does the 2020 statement prove that every current subsystem or Linux version remains unchanged.
What “uses Linux during launch” means
There are two different computer environments involved in a Falcon 9 launch:

|---|---|---|
| Onboard vehicle computers | Linux is used as an environment for flight-software applications and hardware interfaces. Custom software performs vehicle functions, including fault management and computing redundancy. | SpaceX software-team Q&A, June 2020 |
| Ground launch-control consoles | Modular console systems provide computer displays, voice communications, video-over-IP and industrial-control functions. The guide does not identify their operating system as Linux. | Falcon Payload User’s Guide, 2025 edition |
So the defensible answer is that SpaceX publicly described Linux on Falcon flight-software computers, while the launch-control consoles are a separate system whose operating system has not been identified in the cited guide.
How the onboard computers are described
Many synchronized computers, not one “Linux computer”
A SpaceX software participant described the vehicle as having many onboard computers, each configured for an assigned task and synchronized with the others. A flight computer oversees actions across the system. The description is a high-level explanation rather than a complete, current architecture specification.

- Extremely exquisite Falcon 9 STRONGBACK rocket model (For collection or display, not a toy! Children should not buy it)
- First-stage super heavy-duty booster is made of precise aluminum alloy tubes. Other parts constructed with High-quality imported laser-formed photosensitive resin-it rocket material
- The proportional model:1:233
- Actual height: 32cm (the core diameter is 24mm, the real rocket is 9 meters in diameter) This ratio is the best choice for desktop placement
- Note: This model is not a toy model, it is not recommended to buy for children, please buy with caution to avoid unnecessary trouble for your shopping
The repeated control loop
The participant characterized a typical control cycle as reading sensor data, combining it with the system’s previous state, making a decision and sending outputs back to hardware—repeated many times per second. Linux provides an operating environment for applications and interfaces; the mission-specific control logic and safety behavior are implemented in SpaceX software running within that broader system.
What software runs in the countdown and at liftoff
SpaceX’s 2025 Falcon Payload User’s Guide states that “Automated software sequencers control all critical Falcon vehicle functions during terminal countdown.” The same guide describes a prelaunch hold-down in which the flight computer evaluates engine ignition and full-power performance before the vehicle is released.

- Extremely exquisite SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket model (For collection or display, not a toy! Children should not buy it)
- First-stage super heavy-duty booster is made of precise aluminum alloy tubes. The rest of the rocket is made of high-quality imported resin.Extremely good laser shapeability& long-lasting shelf life
- The proportional model:1:233

This means automated software is active before liftoff as well as during flight. It does not, however, identify every component’s operating system or show that a single Linux instance directly performs all launch decisions.
Is Falcon software the same on every mission?
The 2020 SpaceX-team Q&A described a common Falcon software source used across missions, with regular updates and usually new code on each mission. Other engineering groups provide mission-specific configuration data. The examples given include:

- HOBBY MODEL KIT – Unassembled model packed in an envelope with easy to follow instructions. Ideal for ages 14 and up.
- NO GLUE OR SOLDER NEEDED – Parts can be easily clipped from the metal sheets. Tweezers are the recommended tool for bending and twisting the connection tabs.
- SPACEX FALCON 9 - 3 Sheet Model with a Moderate difficulty level. Assembled Size: 3.00 L x 1.50 W x 7.00 H inches. 84 Pieces.
- FROM STEEL SHEETS TO 3D – Pop out the pieces and connect using tabs and holes. Includes illustrated instructions.
- HIGHLY DETAILED ETCHED MODEL – Display your 3D model once completed - collect and build them all.
- State-machine settings for the mission profile.
- Fault-tolerance thresholds.
- Launch-day wind values.
- Other parameters that adapt the shared software to the vehicle and mission.
That is a shared software base with mission-specific configuration and ongoing revisions—not a completely separate program written from scratch for every LEO, cargo or other launch.
How the Autonomous Flight Safety System differs
The SpaceX software-team description places the Autonomous Flight Safety System (AFSS) outside the flight computer. It runs on microcontrollers and receives direct sensor inputs, including inertial-measurement data, along with some computed inputs from the flight computer. A mission data load defines conditions that could require flight termination.

- Name:1:233 Falcon 9+Dragon Launch Station Set Material::Alloy+resin
- Size:Approximately 30x4cm (11.8*1.5inch) Function: Static desktop display
- For collection or display, Not suitable for children to play with Handmade, there may be minor flaws
- Model is a highly Simulated SpaceX Falcon9 Dragon+F9 Starship Heavy Falcon Falcon 9 Biock 5 rocket model. The main body of the first-stage rocket is precision aluminum alloy tube, and the rest of the rocket materials are made of high-quality imported resin-with excellent laser forming ability and long-lasting preservation
This separation matters: Linux-based flight applications and the independent AFSS are not the same safety layer. The public description supports saying that AFSS is independent of the flight computer; it does not establish a complete modern redundancy design or every hardware detail.
What the public record does—and does not—establish
Supported by the cited sources
- SpaceX software-team participants said Falcon and Dragon use Linux for flight-software applications and hardware interfaces.
- Custom application software handles vehicle functions such as fault management and computing redundancy.
- Falcon software uses a shared source base, updated regularly and configured for individual missions.
- AFSS is described as an independent microcontroller-based system.
- Automated sequencers control critical functions during terminal countdown.
Not specified in these sources
- The current Linux distribution or kernel version.
- Processor models, an exact onboard computer count or a complete current Falcon 9 hardware layout.
- Whether every present-day subsystem still matches the 2020 description.
- The operating system used by ground launch-control consoles.
Claims about particular processors, computer-per-engine arrangements, kernel patches or detailed redundancy mechanisms go beyond what these two public sources establish.

Why Linux can be used in a launch vehicle without being the whole safety system
In this architecture, Linux can supply mature operating-system services and hardware-interface support while SpaceX’s applications implement the vehicle’s mission logic. Separating an autonomous safety system onto independent microcontrollers also limits the consequences of a problem in the main flight computer or its applications. The sources describe that division at a high level; they do not publish a full certification or failure-analysis document.
Bottom line for the title
SpaceX software engineers said in 2020 that Falcon flight software uses Linux. The public description presents Linux as an application and interface environment alongside custom flight software, while the Autonomous Flight Safety System runs independently on microcontrollers. SpaceX’s 2025 guide confirms extensive automated software in terminal countdown and a flight-computer check of engine performance, but it does not identify Linux as the operating system for ground consoles or prove that every current Falcon subsystem is unchanged.
