The hatch closed at about 3:24 p.m. EDT, and Dragon autonomously undocked from the station’s Harmony module at 5:05 p.m. EDT. The crew then spent approximately 34 hours in orbit before splashing down safely in the Gulf of Mexico off Pensacola, Florida, on October 25.
This was a completed mission milestone, not a current 2026 event. NASA described Crew-8 as a science expedition and part of the regular Commercial Crew rotation that keeps the ISS staffed while returning experiments and samples to Earth.

Crew-8 leaves the International Space Station
The four crew members transferred from the ISS into Dragon Endeavour on October 23. After final checks, they closed the hatch between the spacecraft and the station at approximately 3:24 p.m. EDT, according to NASA’s operational update (NASA coverage). An earlier advisory had targeted 3:20 p.m.; 3:24 p.m. was the confirmed time.

Return timeline
| Event | Eastern Time | What it meant |
|---|---|---|
| Crew entered Dragon | October 23, 2024 | The crew boarded Endeavour inside the ISS for departure. |
| Hatch closed | Approximately 3:24 p.m., October 23 | The spacecraft was sealed from the station. |
| Undocking | 5:05 p.m., October 23 | Dragon detached from Harmony and began moving away. |
| Departure and orbit-lowering maneuvers | Overnight October 23–24 | Thruster burns set up the eventual reentry path. |
| Deorbit burn | Approximately 2:39 a.m., October 25 | Dragon deliberately lowered its orbit toward the atmosphere. |
| Splashdown | 3:29 a.m., October 25 | The capsule landed in the Gulf of Mexico off Pensacola. |
NASA’s return advisory explains that weather at the splashdown site, sea state, recovery-team readiness, and spacecraft readiness all affected the timing (NASA return advisory). Those factors can move an opportunity even when Dragon itself is operating normally.
Who was aboard Dragon?
- Matthew Dominick — NASA astronaut and Crew-8 commander.
- Michael Barratt — NASA astronaut and pilot.
- Jeanette Epps — NASA astronaut and mission specialist.
- Alexander Grebenkin — Roscosmos cosmonaut and mission specialist.
NASA’s return-day coverage identifies the crew and their positions inside Endeavour (crew and hatch coverage). “Crew members” is the accurate collective term because Grebenkin is a cosmonaut rather than a NASA astronaut.

What happens after Dragon undocks?
Undocking starts a carefully sequenced flight home:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Departure burns: Dragon fires its thrusters to increase its distance from the ISS and avoid recontact.
- Orbit lowering: Additional maneuvers place the spacecraft on a trajectory that intersects the atmosphere.
- Trunk jettison: The unpressurized trunk, which carries equipment during the mission, separates before reentry.
- Deorbit burn: A final major engine burn targets the designated recovery corridor. NASA reported that Crew-8’s burn completed as expected (NASA deorbit update).
- Atmospheric reentry: Dragon’s heat shield protects the pressurized crew cabin as it encounters the atmosphere.
- Parachute descent: NASA’s pre-splashdown update said the drogue parachutes were designed to deploy at roughly 18,000 feet, followed less than a minute later by the main parachutes at about 6,000 feet.
- Water landing: The capsule splashes down for recovery by specialized boats and ship crews.
NASA described the interval from undocking to planned splashdown as approximately 34 hours (undocking and return timeline). Communications can shift between video and audio during parts of this flight as the spacecraft changes orientation and passes through communications-coverage gaps.

Where and when did Crew-8 splash down?
Dragon splashed down at 3:29 a.m. EDT on October 25, 2024, in the Gulf of Mexico off Pensacola, Florida. Earlier plans discussed several possible landing zones off Florida; the Pensacola-area Gulf site was the final location reported after landing (NASA splashdown release).
Recovery teams secured Dragon with fast boats, hoisted the capsule onto the recovery ship, and helped the four crew members out. NASA said they were taken together to a local medical facility for additional postflight evaluation before returning to Houston (NASA mission update). That evaluation was standard postflight care, not an announcement of a medical emergency.

Science came home with the crew
Crewed Dragon flights serve as more than transportation. Crew-8 carried out a seven-month science expedition under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program and returned experiments, biological samples, and equipment that require hands-on processing on Earth. The crew’s presence enabled research in microgravity, while the return leg brought time-sensitive materials back for analysis (NASA Crew-8 mission overview).
Why the departure mattered to the ISS program
Crew-8’s undocking was part of the station’s planned crew-rotation system. Leaving the ISS safely made room for the next rotation, preserved a continuous human presence in orbit, and moved completed research from the laboratory to Earth. It also demonstrated the operational partnership between NASA and SpaceX: a reusable Dragon spacecraft, launched by Falcon 9, handled the crew’s transport, autonomous station departure, atmospheric return, and ocean recovery.
The October 23 boarding should not be confused with launch-day ingress. NASA also published coverage of the same crew entering Dragon at Kennedy Space Center before launch on March 3 (March launch coverage). The event described here was the separate ISS return operation.
