Spaced Linux vs Devuan: What This Systemd-Free Desktop Adds

Spaced Linux combines a rolling Devuan Ceres base with sysvinit, MATE, Compiz, and Calamares. Learn what that means before downloading or installing.

Spaced Linux is a desktop distribution built on Devuan Ceres, not an official Devuan desktop edition. It pairs Devuan’s systemd-free base with sysvinit, the MATE desktop, Compiz, and a graphical installer. Its appeal is a familiar graphical environment with a rolling, customizable foundation; the trade-off is that Ceres is unstable and rolling, and the project’s published hardware checks do not establish compatibility with every physical PC.

What Spaced Linux is—and how it relates to Devuan

Spaced Linux is an independently developed distribution based on Devuan Ceres. Devuan describes itself as a Debian fork without systemd; Spaced Linux selects one of Devuan’s available init options rather than representing all Devuan installations. Devuan lists SysVinit, OpenRC, and Runit as options, while Spaced Linux identifies sysvinit as its init system. See Devuan’s overview and its project identity information.

The project positions Spaced Linux as a “systemd-free desktop” that aims to feel familiar while remaining open to inspection and customization. That is project positioning, not an independent usability assessment. The key distinction for a prospective user is that you get a preselected desktop and toolset on a rolling Devuan base rather than a generic Devuan installation in which you choose and assemble those components yourself.

What comes in the desktop

The project’s repository documents the distribution’s core components. They form a conventional desktop, with system packages and graphical applications delivered through different channels.

Area Spaced Linux selection What it means
Base Devuan Ceres An unstable, rolling-release base; it is not a fixed-version stable release.
Init system sysvinit The system’s selected init, distinct from Devuan’s broader choice of init systems.
Desktop and window management MATE and Compiz MATE provides the desktop environment; Compiz is named as the primary window manager.
File manager and menu Caja and Brisk Menu Desktop navigation and application-launching components.
Login screen LightDM GTK Greeter The graphical login greeter.
Installer Calamares A graphical installer for setting up the system.

The project also documents a first-run Welcome application. Its software approach combines APT for native system packages with Flatpak, Flathub, and a signed project catalog called spaced-github for desktop apps. This gives users more than one route to install software, but does not mean every application is available through every route.

Is its rolling Devuan base the right fit?

Ceres is identified by the project as unstable and rolling. That means the system follows ongoing package changes rather than remaining on a fixed stable release. A rolling base can suit users who want current software and are comfortable managing updates; it is less suited to someone who prioritizes a slow-changing, fixed platform. The project’s own description of Ceres should not be read as a guarantee that updates will never require troubleshooting.

How installation and ISO verification work

Spaced Linux provides a downloadable ISO and links to its GitHub releases. Its repository recommends verifying the downloaded image against the checksum file supplied with that specific release. Use the filename published for the release you actually downloaded; do not substitute an older release’s checksum name.

Linux Mint 22 (Latest Version) Cinnamon Bootable Live USB for PC/Laptop 64-bit
  • Live Boot: Simply plug the USB drive into your computer, select the USB drive as your boot device, and experience Linux Mint without installation. This allows you to test the OS and its features before making any changes to your system.
  • Install Option: Once you've tested and decided to keep Linux Mint, you can easily install it on your computer directly from the USB drive.
  • Pre-installed software like LibreOffice for office tasks, a capable web browser (Firefox), email client (Thunderbird), and multimedia tools. This minimizes the need for additional downloads, saving you time and effort.
  • Resource Efficiency: Designed to run efficiently on a variety of hardware configurations. It demands fewer system resources compared to some other operating systems, making it an excellent choice for older computers or devices with limited hardware specifications.
  • Compatible with PC/Laptop/Desktop brands - Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo, Samsung, Acer, Toshiba & more. Minimum system requirements 4 GB RAM Dual-Core Processor (2 GHz) 20 GB of free disk space
  1. Choose the current release. Start from the project’s official site and follow its download or release link. Confirm the release date, ISO filename, checksum filename, and notes on the linked release before proceeding.
  2. Download both files. Save the ISO and its accompanying SHA-256 verification file in the same directory.
  3. Check the image on Linux. In a terminal opened in that directory, run sha256sum -c followed by the exact checksum filename supplied for that release, for example sha256sum -c CHECKSUM_FILENAME. Replace CHECKSUM_FILENAME with the real release filename. A successful check reports that the ISO is OK; a mismatch means you should not use that image and should download it again or check the release details.
  4. Test before installing. Boot the image as a live session or try it in a virtual machine first. Check the devices and functions you rely on, then follow the current release’s installation notes. The release documentation refers to removing the installation USB before restarting once installation is complete.

Calamares is the documented graphical installer. The project’s 9.26.4 release notes report BIOS and EFI virtual-machine checks, package identity checks, and repository integrity checks, and say installed systems receive that release through Spaced Update. These are the project’s published validation claims, not independent test results or proof that every physical device works.

Hardware compatibility and release freshness

The reviewed project pages do not establish a minimum CPU, memory, storage, graphics, or Wi-Fi specification. Do not infer that a computer is supported from the distribution’s desktop components alone. A live session or virtual-machine trial can help assess basic behavior, but a virtual machine cannot validate all physical graphics, wireless, display, or suspend configurations.

Release details are particularly important to check at download time. Project pages surfaced inconsistent version signals: the homepage’s live link pointed to 10.26.1, while repository and release material included 9.26.3, 9.26.4, and a 10.26 line. That does not establish which release is newest now. Treat the version number and checksum as release-specific, and rely on the current linked release page and its notes rather than assuming 9.26.4 is current. The project’s release listings are the place to verify the selected image and its documentation.

Who should consider Spaced Linux?

  • A good candidate: someone looking for a systemd-free desktop, comfortable with a rolling base, who wants sysvinit and a ready-made MATE desktop with Compiz.
  • Consider another approach: someone who needs a fixed stable release, a clearly stated hardware certification list, or a desktop/init combination different from Spaced Linux’s documented defaults.
  • Before committing: check the current release notes, verify the ISO checksum, and test the hardware you depend on rather than treating virtual-machine validation as a physical-device compatibility guarantee.
