Set asteroid density before you generate the world. In Space Engineers, the normal world-settings screen does not provide a supported way to change the asteroid amount after a save already exists. For a new world, choose the value in the advanced world-creation settings. On a dedicated server, the corresponding numerical setting is ProceduralDensity; the documented GUI range is 0 to 1, and 0 disables automatic procedural asteroid spawning.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Space Engineers servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
If you are maintaining an existing server, a stopped-server edit to Sandbox_config.sbc is a community-reported troubleshooting method, not a guaranteed replacement for world generation. Back up the save, confirm which file your host actually uses, stay within the documented range, and do not expect the change to regenerate or reposition asteroids that players have already visited or drilled.

The World Settings reference describes Asteroid amount as a world-generation setting. That distinction matters: it controls how procedural asteroids are created as the world is generated, rather than acting like a live slider that rebuilds a populated map. The ordinary existing-world settings interface therefore does not expose a retroactive asteroid-density change.
| Approach | When it applies | What access you need | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Choose Asteroid amount during world creation | Before a new world is generated | Access to the New Game or server world-creation settings | You must make the choice before the save exists |
| Edit an existing server configuration | After creation, as troubleshooting | Server stopped, backup, and host access to the relevant configuration | Community reports are version- and host-dependent; existing interacted asteroids are not simply rebuilt |
| Change ProceduralSeed | Procedural-generation setup | Configuration access | The seed is separate from density and is not a documented recipe for safely reshaping an established save |
| Use values outside the GUI range | Experimental only | Manual configuration access | The dedicated-server guide calls out-of-range values untested and officially unsupported |
If you can recreate the world, world creation is the predictable path. If the save is already active, treat any file edit as a controlled recovery attempt, not as a promise that the map will be regenerated.

What the asteroid settings mean
Asteroid amount
Asteroid amount is the player-facing world-generation choice for asteroid density in space. Select it while creating the world, using the advanced world settings. A Steam support reply from a user identified as a Space Engineers developer also points administrators to this creation-time choice and notes that the option disappears after world creation.
The setting does not represent an exact asteroid count. The available references describe density and generation behavior, not a universal number of asteroids for a particular preset. The result also depends on the world, procedural generation, and what areas players have explored.
ProceduralDensity
ProceduralDensity is the numerical session setting for procedural asteroid density. The SessionSettings reference lists a dedicated-server GUI range of 0–1:
0disables automatic procedural asteroid spawning.- Values above zero enable procedural spawning within the documented range.
- The references do not establish a universal “best” value or a performance benchmark for low, normal, or high density.
Keep the value inside the range exposed by the game’s dedicated-server interface unless you are deliberately conducting an unsupported experiment. Do not present a value such as 1.5 as a normal optimization; the dedicated-server guide warns that numbers outside GUI limits are untested, unsupported, and capable of seriously affecting gameplay or performance.

ProceduralSeed
ProceduralSeed is the unique starting seed for procedurally generated content. It is not a density control. Changing the seed does not mean “add more asteroids,” and the available references do not provide a safe, authoritative procedure for changing it on an established save. Treat density and seed as separate decisions.
Set asteroid density while creating a new world
Use this route whenever the world can be recreated or you are starting a fresh server. Interface wording can vary slightly by game version, but the setting belongs in the advanced world-generation controls.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open the game’s New Game or world-creation screen.
- Select the scenario or starting template you want.
- Open Advanced world settings (the exact label may vary by version).
- Locate Asteroid amount and choose the density offered by the interface.
- Review the rest of the world settings, then create the world.
- For a dedicated server, transfer or select that newly generated world in the server management workflow and start the server.
Make the choice before players build, mine, or travel. Once the save contains explored space, recreating it changes the world itself, so preserve the original save if you may need to return to it.
Dedicated server versus a player-hosted world
A separate dedicated server is administered differently from a world hosted directly by a player. The dedicated-server guide treats these as distinct setups, and the available controls depend on the host software and its control panel.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Player-hosted world: the host normally chooses asteroid amount during world creation and may have no supported post-creation control.
- Dedicated server with a control panel: the panel may expose the documented density field, usually as a value from 0 to 1.
- Managed hosting: the provider may hide or duplicate configuration files. If the panel does not expose the setting, ask the host which file and world instance are authoritative before editing anything.
- Self-managed server: you may be able to inspect the world’s configuration directly, but you still need a stopped server and a backup.
A setting that appears to “revert” after restart often indicates that the wrong world or configuration was edited, that a panel regenerated the file, or that more than one configuration copy is involved. Community reports mention duplicated settings across files, but they do not establish one universal file list for every host.
Editing an existing server: a cautious procedure
Community discussions describe changing Sandbox_config.sbc while the server is offline, restarting it, and checking the result in game. Because this is not the ordinary supported UI workflow, use the following safeguards and stop if your host does not provide the required access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Identify the exact world. Confirm the save name and server instance that players actually join. Do not assume the first configuration file you find controls the active world.
- Stop the server completely. Wait until the process has shut down and the host reports it as offline. Editing while the game is writing the save can overwrite your change or damage the world.
- Make a full backup. Copy the world directory and the relevant configuration file to a separate location. Keep the untouched backup until the server has been tested.
- Check host access. Look for the server’s world settings or
Sandbox_config.sbc. File names, paths, permissions, and panel behavior differ by hosting setup. Contact the host if the file is unavailable. - Find the procedural density field. If the configuration exposes
ProceduralDensity, set it to a value in the documented 0–1 range. Do not replace the seed with a density value;ProceduralSeedserves a different purpose. - Save one deliberate edit. Avoid changing unrelated settings in the same maintenance window. Record the old and new value so you can roll back.
- Start the server and verify. Confirm that the server remains online, reconnect with an administrator account, and test in a new or unexplored area. Check the configuration again after restart to see whether the host rewrote it.
- Restore the backup if needed. If the server fails to load, the value reverts, or gameplay behaves unexpectedly, stop the server and restore the untouched copy before contacting support.
This procedure cannot force already generated or interacted-with asteroids to change. A community report specifically cautions that asteroids players have visited or drilled are not simply transformed by editing the value.
Why asteroids are not spawning on a dedicated server
Work through these checks in order. They separate a disabled setting from a file, world-state, or expectation problem.

1. Confirm that procedural spawning is enabled
Read the active world’s ProceduralDensity. A value of 0 disables automatic procedural asteroid spawning by definition. If the control panel shows a different value from the file, determine which one the host applies at startup.
2. Verify the edited world is the live world
Dedicated servers can contain multiple saves or configuration copies. Check the world name, instance, and startup selection. A correctly edited file has no effect if the server launches another save.
3. Restart after a stopped-server edit
Do not expect a running process to reload a manually edited file. Stop the server, save the change, start it again, and inspect the value after startup.
4. Test in unexplored space
Do not use an old mining site as the only test. Existing interacted asteroids are not guaranteed to be regenerated or repositioned when density changes. Travel to an area the server has not previously populated and compare behavior there.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What density changes will not do
- It will not provide an exact guaranteed asteroid count for every world.
- It will not automatically move or rebuild every asteroid already encountered by players.
- It will not turn
ProceduralSeedinto a density control. - It will not make an unsupported out-of-range number officially safe.
- It will not solve a wrong-world or wrong-file problem on a dedicated server.
These limits are why a fresh world is the cleanest solution when the intended change is substantial and the existing save can be retired or archived.
Choosing between a new world and an existing-save edit
| Question | Start a new world | Attempt an existing-save edit |
|---|---|---|
| Can the world be recreated? | Best fit; the setting is applied during generation. | Useful only when rebuilding is unacceptable. |
| Does the host expose the setting? | Usually available in world creation. | Depends on panel and file access. |
| Is the desired value within 0–1? | Choose from the documented interface. | Keep manual edits within 0–1. |
| Has the world been heavily explored or mined? | Creates a predictable new map, but abandons the old map unless archived. | Existing interacted asteroids may remain unchanged. |
| What support level applies? | Normal game workflow. | Community-reported, version- and host-dependent troubleshooting. |
Tree density and other world-generation options
The reader question often includes tree density alongside asteroid density. The evidence available for this guide establishes the asteroid behavior and does not establish a universal, post-creation procedure for tree density. Do not assume that every generation option can be edited safely after a save exists. Check the current world-settings reference for the specific option, and use the same discipline: make generation choices before creating a new world, back up an established save, and treat manual file edits as host- and version-dependent.
Quick Recap
Practical checklist for administrators
- Decide on asteroid amount before generating a new world whenever possible.
- For a dedicated server, verify
ProceduralDensityand remember that0disables automatic spawning. - Keep density within the documented GUI range of 0–1.
- Keep
ProceduralSeedconceptually separate from density. - Stop the server and back up the world before editing files.
- Confirm the host’s authoritative world and configuration path.
- Test in unexplored space rather than judging only from mined asteroids.
- Restore the backup and contact the host if settings revert or the server fails to load.
