The reliable way to install a CurseForge modpack is to use the pack’s own server files when they exist, then run the matching Forge, NeoForge or Fabric server on the same Minecraft version. Downloading the modpack only through the desktop client is not enough: a server needs its own loader, mods, configuration files and startup settings.

Collect these details before copying a single file. A mismatch at this stage is the most common reason a modded server refuses to start.

Write down the complete pack name, Minecraft version, loader and pack release. “The latest version” is not a safe description: a pack can publish several files for the same Minecraft version, and a server and client must use the same one.
Download the correct CurseForge server files
1. Open the pack’s Files page
- Open the modpack’s page on the CurseForge website.
- Select Files.
- Choose the exact release you intend to run, rather than simply downloading whichever file is shown first.
- Look for a separate download labelled Server Files. It may appear in an Additional Files area instead of beside the main client download.
Separate server downloads are normal. File listings have used names such as “All the Mods 10 – ATM10 – Server-Files-0.31” and “All The Forge – Server Files – v11.0.2”; the important part is the pack release and version, not the wording of the title.

2. Download from the website when the desktop app is incomplete
The desktop app is designed primarily to install a client instance. It may not expose every additional file published on the website. If you cannot find server files in the app, open the pack’s web page, select the same release and download the server archive there. Do not substitute the client ZIP for a server package without checking its contents.
3. Inspect the archive before uploading it
Extract the archive into a new, empty folder on your computer. A usable package commonly contains a loader or launcher file, a mods directory, configuration directories and either a start script or instructions for creating one. The exact layout differs by pack. Keep the extracted top-level folder intact unless the pack’s instructions say otherwise; moving only the mods directory can leave required configuration or script files behind.
Choose and install the matching server loader
The loader is the software that starts Minecraft and loads the pack’s mods. Use the loader named by the selected pack file; Forge, NeoForge and Fabric are not interchangeable.

When the pack includes a start script
Some server packages contain a Windows batch file or a shell script that downloads the loader and required files before starting. Run that script from inside the extracted server directory instead of manually replacing its steps. On a host, upload the script and use the control panel’s custom start command if the host supports one. A script written for one operating system may need the host’s equivalent shell or a manual setup.
When installing the loader manually
- Confirm the Java runtime selected on the computer or host is compatible with the pack’s Minecraft version and loader.
- Run the Forge or NeoForge installer and select the server option.
- Choose the extracted pack directory as the installation location.
- Allow the installer to create its loader files and libraries.
- For Fabric, install the server launcher into the same directory and use the loader version required by the pack.
- Do not point the server at the ordinary vanilla
minecraft_server.jarafter installing a mod loader. The startup target must be the Forge, NeoForge or Fabric server launcher created for this pack.
Installer screens and filenames change between releases. If a pack supplies its own script or server instructions, treat those as the authoritative sequence for that release.

Upload the server to a host
Use SFTP or the host’s file manager
- Stop the server if the host created an empty Minecraft instance for you.
- Open SFTP or the web file manager and navigate to the server’s main directory, the location that contains the vanilla server files or startup configuration.
- Upload the extracted server-pack contents. Avoid creating an unnecessary extra level such as
/server-pack/server-pack/mods; the loader andmodsdirectory should be in the directory from which the host starts Minecraft. - Preserve directory names and capitalization. Configuration paths and script references can depend on them.
- Wait for every file to finish uploading before starting the server. Large packs can contain many libraries and mod files, so an interrupted transfer may look like a loader failure later.
Set the startup settings
In the host control panel, select the Minecraft version, mod loader and Java runtime that match your chosen pack release. Then set the startup jar or launch command to the loader’s server file. If the panel offers a list of detected jars, choose the Forge, NeoForge or Fabric entry rather than the vanilla entry. If a supplied script is intended to download or launch the loader, use that script instead of overriding it with a vanilla command.

Control-panel labels differ by provider. Look for fields named Server type, Loader, Version, Java version, Startup jar or Custom launch command. When a setting is unclear, compare it with the filenames in the uploaded directory and the pack’s own instructions.
Accept the EULA, allocate memory and start
First launch
- Start the server once from the control panel or the supplied script.
- Read the console output. A first run may create an EULA file and additional directories before stopping.
- Open the generated EULA file, read the Minecraft EULA and change the acceptance setting only if you agree to its terms.
- Start the server again.
- Watch the console through the world-load message rather than assuming that a process marked “running” has completed startup.
Memory and storage
Allocate enough RAM for the pack, its world and the number of players you expect, within the limits of your plan or machine. No universal memory number applies to all CurseForge packs, so do not copy a value from an unrelated pack. Start conservatively, watch the console and host resource graph, and increase the allocation if the server repeatedly runs out of memory. Leave storage headroom for world growth, logs, backups and generated dimensions.
Never delete a world or configuration directory to solve a startup problem without making a backup first. A clean world can hide the real problem and permanently remove player progress.
Make every player use the same client pack
Players must install the same modpack name, platform and exact release used by the server. “Nearly the same” is not enough: changing the pack file, Minecraft version or loader can change registries, configuration values and required mods.

- Use the same CurseForge pack release shown in the server download.
- Use the same Minecraft version.
- Use the same loader family and compatible loader release.
- Keep client-side configuration choices consistent when the pack requires them.
- Connect only after the server has finished loading the world.
If a player is rejected immediately, compare the client’s installed profile with the server’s recorded pack release before changing files at random. A client-only visual or performance mod can be acceptable on some packs, but a missing gameplay mod or a different mod version can prevent a connection.
If no server pack is published
Some CurseForge projects do not provide a dedicated server download. In that case, the client profile is a starting point rather than a ready-to-run server.
- Create a clean server directory for the exact Minecraft version.
- Install the specified Forge, NeoForge or Fabric server loader.
- Copy the pack’s
modsand configuration directories into the server directory. - Review the mod list and remove mods that are explicitly client-only, such as a purely visual interface or client performance component.
- Keep gameplay, world-generation and server-required mods.
- Start the server, accept the EULA when prompted, and inspect the console for a mod that is missing, client-only or built for another loader.
- Back up the resulting directory before inviting players.
There is no safe universal list of client-only mods. Read each mod’s project description or the pack author’s notes. Removing a mod simply because its name sounds cosmetic can break a pack, while leaving a client-only mod on a dedicated server can stop startup.
Using a host’s one-click CurseForge installer
Many game-server hosts provide a Modpacks tab or an installer that accepts a CurseForge pack link. This can automate downloading files, selecting a loader and configuring the startup command.
- Back up any existing world and configuration files.
- Open the host’s Modpacks or installer section.
- Choose CurseForge or paste the pack link, if the panel supports links.
- Select the exact pack release, Minecraft version and loader offered by the pack.
- Confirm the reinstall warning. An installer may replace the current server directory.
- Start the server and read the console through world loading.
One-click installation does not remove the need to verify versions. If the panel offers only a different release or loader than the pack page, stop and use a manual upload or ask the host whether that release is supported.

Troubleshooting a failed installation
The server starts as vanilla Minecraft
Check the startup jar or command first. It is probably still pointing at minecraft_server.jar rather than the Forge, NeoForge or Fabric launcher. Change the startup setting, save it, and restart with the correct Java runtime.
The loader reports incompatible Minecraft or mod versions
Compare the server’s Minecraft version, loader and pack release with the client profile and the selected CurseForge file. Reinstalling the latest loader does not fix a pack that requires an older release. Use the exact version named by the pack.
The server stops during mod loading
Read the final error and identify the first mod or library named. Common causes include an incomplete upload, a client-only mod copied to a dedicated server, a missing dependency or a mod built for another loader. Re-extract a fresh server archive, verify the transfer and remove only the component identified as client-only or incompatible. Keep a copy of the failing directory before experimenting.
The console repeats an EULA or first-run message
Stop the process, open the EULA file in the actual server directory and confirm that the acceptance setting was saved. If the message returns, the host may be starting a different directory than the one you edited; compare the startup path and uploaded file location.
The server runs out of memory or becomes unresponsive
Check the host’s memory allocation and resource graph, then confirm that the server is not generating a new world repeatedly after each failed start. Increase memory only within the machine or plan’s limits, remove accidental duplicate installations, and keep storage available for logs and world data.
Players are kicked despite using the pack
Compare the exact pack release, Minecraft version and loader on the player’s profile with the server. Also compare configuration files when the pack distributes them. A player who copied individual mods instead of installing the complete profile may have a different dependency or configuration set.

Mods load but their blocks, recipes or dimensions are missing
Check that the complete configuration and data directories were uploaded, not only the mods folder. Start from a backup and restore the server-pack directory as supplied, then test again. Do not delete the world until you know whether the missing content is a configuration problem or a world-generation change.
Safe updates and routine maintenance
Updating to another pack release
Treat an update as a separate installation. Read the new release notes, download its matching server files if available, back up the world and configuration, and compare the new loader and Minecraft requirements. Do not overwrite a running installation while the server is online.
Backups
- Stop the server before taking a file-level backup so world files are not changing during the copy.
- Back up the world,
mods, configuration directories, startup settings and any custom scripts. - Keep at least one backup from before every pack or loader change.
- Test that an archive can actually be opened before deleting older copies.
Keep a version record
Record the pack release, Minecraft version, loader, Java selection and date of each installation. This turns a vague “it worked before the update” problem into a reversible change and helps every player install the same profile.
Installation checklist
- Pack release selected on the CurseForge Files page
- Minecraft version matches the server exactly
- Forge, NeoForge or Fabric matches the pack
- Dedicated server files downloaded, or manual server assembly completed
- Loader installed in the server directory
- All files uploaded without an extra nested folder
- Startup target points to the modded loader, not vanilla Minecraft
- Java runtime selected for the pack
- EULA accepted after reading it
- RAM and storage checked
- Console reaches world loading
- Every player uses the same pack release, loader and Minecraft version
- Backup created before inviting players or updating
The Bottom Line
Use the exact CurseForge release, download its dedicated server files when available, install the matching Forge, NeoForge or Fabric loader, and verify the host’s startup target before accepting the EULA and starting the world. If no server pack exists, assemble the server manually and remove only mods identified as client-only.
