Its strengths are portability, flexible wired connections and a feature set suited to outdoor use. The main buying caveat is battery life: Soundcast’s product page says 15 hours, but its manual gives a more cautious 4–8 hours depending on volume. For an older or used unit, the battery’s actual condition matters more than either headline figure.

At 173 mm long and 453 g, the VG1 is easy to carry in a bag, but its dimensions make it more compact than pocket-sized. The 3.5 mm loop output allows a wired connection onward; it is distinct from the auxiliary input used to feed audio into the speaker.

Historical reviews make the VG1 look appealing if you want a sturdy-feeling portable speaker with more connections than Bluetooth alone. TechHive’s December 20, 2016 review praised the sound from its small enclosure, portability and IP67 positioning. A 9to5Mac review published February 16, 2017 described the one-pound speaker as easy to carry in a bag and noted its simple controls.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatibility guaranteed
- Length: 3 Ft.
Those are reviewers’ assessments from 2016 and 2017, not current comparative testing. The control layout is notably spare: the 9to5Mac review described power/pairing, play/pause and volume controls, and TechHive listed the lack of next- and previous-track buttons as a drawback. If you often skip tracks directly from a speaker, that omission may be inconvenient.
The hardware mix is useful for a speaker of this size: Bluetooth, wired input and output, speakerphone support in the manual, and stereo pairing of two VG1 units according to Soundcast. Whether it is a good buy today depends heavily on the individual unit’s condition and price, neither of which is established by its original specifications or historical reviews.
How long does the VG1 battery last?
Published runtime claims do not agree. Soundcast’s product page states 15 hours, while its 2016 manual says music playback lasts 4–8 hours depending on volume. Best Buy repeats “up to 15 hours” and notes that use, configuration and battery aging affect runtime. Treat 15 hours as a manufacturer-stated upper claim, not a dependable expectation—especially for an older speaker.

A 9to5Mac reviewer reported that a VG1 played for about ten hours overnight at roughly 50% volume, but the reviewer said they had not verified Soundcast’s 15-hour claim. That single 2017 observation is not a standardized test or a guarantee for another unit. In practice, volume, settings and battery age can all affect playback time.
The manual specifies a 3.7 V, 2900 mAh lithium-polymer battery and says charging takes approximately 3.5 hours, depending on the charging source. It instructs users to charge with the supplied Micro-USB cable and describes a red indicator for low battery. For a used speaker, ask the seller about real-world playback time and check the return terms; an old battery may perform well below the published figures.
Is the Soundcast VG1 waterproof?
Soundcast rates the VG1 IP67 and lists protection at one metre. The rating indicates dust-tight protection and a defined level of water-ingress protection under test conditions; it does not mean the speaker is intended for unlimited underwater use. A copy of the manual hosted by Soundcast says the audio jacks and charging port are dustproof and waterproof to three feet for up to 30 minutes.

The 2017 9to5Mac review separately reports a company claim about a ten-foot dunk. That is distinct from the product’s stated IP67 rating and should not be treated as an independently established immersion limit. Keep the rubber port cover properly closed before exposing the speaker to water, and do not infer protection beyond the manufacturer’s stated rating.
What to check before buying an older VG1
The specifications describe what the model was designed to offer; they do not establish the condition, warranty or included accessories of a particular used or old-stock speaker. Before paying, check the unit itself and the seller’s terms.
- Battery: Ask how long it plays on a charge and whether it holds charge when idle. A 2016 manual’s 4–8-hour range and the current product page’s 15-hour claim are not substitutes for checking an aging battery.
- Ports and cover: Inspect the Micro-USB charging connection, 3.5 mm input and loop output, plus the rubber flap that covers the connections.
- Controls and pairing: Confirm that power/pairing, play/pause and volume buttons work, and test Bluetooth connection. If you plan to use two units in stereo, verify that the pairing function works on both.
- Accessories: The manual and Consumer Reports’ historical listing identify items such as a Micro-USB cable, 3.5 mm cable and lanyard. Do not assume they are included with a present-day listing; confirm the seller’s actual bundle.
- Price, returns and warranty: Compare the asking price with the unit’s verified condition and return policy. Consumer Reports lists a 12-month parts-and-labor warranty in a historical product entry, but that does not establish coverage for a current used or old-stock purchase.
Older reviews also differ on what was included: TechHive noted that no AC adapter came in the box. Check the exact listing rather than assuming an adapter is included.
Verdict
The Soundcast VG1’s combination of portable dimensions, Bluetooth, wired connections, stereo-pairing support and a manufacturer-stated IP67 rating makes it a capable feature set on paper. Its weaknesses are the limited track controls and uncertain real-world runtime, particularly on an older unit. Consider it if the price reflects its age and you can verify the battery and return terms; do not buy on the assumption that every unit will deliver 15 hours or that IP67 means unrestricted underwater use.
