If your TV’s speakers make dialogue easy to follow and fill your usual listening area, you may not need an upgrade. Choose a soundbar when you want a compact way to add scale or dialogue-focused controls; consider separate speakers if you have room and want wider separation or more flexibility. None is automatically best: the result depends on the specific devices, room, placement, content, and connection.
When TV speakers are enough
Keep the built-in speakers if you can comfortably hear dialogue and the sound suits the room and the way you watch. In a small viewing space, built-in speakers may be sufficient; Dolby also describes virtualized Atmos as an option in that setting in its Home Theater Setup Guide.

Judge your own setup with the content you watch most. If you routinely turn on captions because speech is hard to follow, or the sound feels too small for the room, that is a practical reason to consider external audio—not proof that any particular soundbar will fix it.
What a soundbar adds—and what it does not
A soundbar is the compact, relatively simple step up from TV speakers. It can provide a larger presentation and may offer dialogue-focused modes or controls. Dolby presents soundbars, with or without surround satellites, as a balance of convenience and room-filling sound; Philips likewise describes them as a simple way to bolster TV audio and dialogue. These are manufacturers’ setup recommendations, not a controlled comparison of every product. Philips sums up its own advice this way: “For most people, a soundbar is the simple, satisfying choice.”

A soundbar does not guarantee clearer dialogue or better sound in every room. Performance varies by model, TV, placement, content, and listening position. A subwoofer is an optional addition for more low-frequency impact, not a requirement; whether deeper bass is worthwhile depends on what you watch and what suits your room.
When separate speakers make more sense
A stereo pair placed on either side of the TV can create more space between left and right sounds than a single compact bar, though the result depends on placement and the speakers themselves. Philips describes separate speakers as a way to widen the soundstage and improve separation. A larger system with an AV receiver and individual speakers offers more ways to tailor a dedicated theater to the room, according to Dolby’s setup guide.

- Amp up your audio - Fire TV Soundbar enhances TV audio with dual speakers for fuller sound, clearer dialogue, and deeper bass—all in a compact design.
- Immersive sound - Enjoy a three-dimensional virtual surround sound experience with DTS Virtual:X and more detail with Dolby Audio.
- Easy setup - Just plug in the included HDMI cable to the HDMI eARC/ARC port on your TV to instantly enjoy audio that's always in sync.
- Compact design - With a length of 24“ and a height of just 2.5", Fire TV Soundbar fits most entertainment consoles and TV stands.
- Stream audio with Bluetooth - Connect your phone or tablet via Bluetooth to fill the room with your favorite music.
The trade-off is space and setup. Separate speakers need suitable positions around the room; a receiver system can mean more components and wiring. Bose, a manufacturer, also notes that traditional systems generally require more room and components, while soundbars are less upgradeable one component at a time. Treat that as a perspective on convenience and modularity, not an independent product test.

Rear speakers and a subwoofer are optional expansions: rear speakers can add surround effects, while a subwoofer handles low frequencies. Some TV-and-speaker combinations can also use the TV speakers as a center channel, but only if both the TV and the audio system support that arrangement. Check the specific models rather than assuming compatibility.

Check connections before you buy
Confirm that the exact TV and audio system support the connection and audio features you want. HDMI ARC or eARC can carry TV audio to a soundbar over one cable, as Dolby explains, but having a port does not by itself establish that every desired audio format or feature will work. Check both devices’ specifications and setup instructions.
If you use a console or another HDMI source, also check the soundbar’s passthrough capabilities. The bar must support the source’s required video resolution and refresh rate if you plan to connect that source to the bar rather than the TV.

For gaming, consider the whole audio path
Sound and picture can arrive out of sync, and the connection route can affect the result. In measurements reported in 2024, RTINGS found that AV-sync error was often lower in its tested configurations when a source connected to a soundbar’s HDMI input than when audio returned from the TV over ARC. Those results apply to the devices and configurations tested, not every soundbar, television, or console. The article also distinguishes soundbar audio latency from end-to-end AV-sync error and notes that audio format and soundbar processing affect latency. See RTINGS’ explanation of its measurements and check model-specific passthrough and sync performance.

- Dialogue is already clear and the room sounds full enough: Keep the TV speakers and avoid buying equipment you do not need.
- You want a simple, compact upgrade: Consider a soundbar, and check whether its controls and supported connections address your needs.
- You want more bass: Consider whether a soundbar with a subwoofer suits your content and room; treat the subwoofer as an optional expansion.
- You want wider stereo separation or a system you can tailor: Look at separate speakers or a receiver-based setup, provided you have room for the speakers and components.
- You want surround effects: Compare bars with satellites and separate-speaker systems, checking placement needs and compatibility rather than relying on the product category alone.
- You game through HDMI: Verify passthrough for your console’s video settings and look for model-specific AV-sync information.
Dolby’s home-theater guide and Philips’ home-cinema guide offer manufacturer setup advice; neither establishes that one type of system will outperform another in your particular room. A specific recommendation depends on the TV and audio-system models, room, content, and intended gaming or Atmos use.
