To estimate a standard Claude Haiku API request, calculate input and output costs separately using the exact model’s rates, then add them. Anthropic’s migration documentation lists Claude Haiku 4.5 at $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. Those are base rates: caching, batch processing, tools, account terms, and taxes can change what you pay.
1. Confirm which Haiku model the request used
“Claude Haiku” alone is not enough to choose a price. Check the exact model name in the API request or usage record before doing the arithmetic. Anthropic’s model-status documentation lists Haiku 4.5 as active and Haiku 3 and Haiku 3.5 as retired; model availability and prices can change, so verify the current model and rate on Anthropic’s official pricing and model-status pages before budgeting.

The Haiku 4.5 base rates cited in Anthropic’s migration documentation are $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. They are not cache or batch rates.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Calculate input and output costs separately
For a standard request without cached tokens, use:
- Input cost = input tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × input price per million tokens
- Output cost = output tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × output price per million tokens
- Estimated token cost = input cost + output cost
At the cited Haiku 4.5 base rates, that becomes:
- Input cost = input tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × $1
- Output cost = output tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × $5
Worked example: 100,000 input tokens and 20,000 output tokens
- Input: 100,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $1 = $0.10
- Output: 20,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $5 = $0.10
- Estimated total: $0.20
This is arithmetic using the cited base rates, not a measured request or a guaranteed invoice. It excludes feature-specific charges, account-specific terms, and taxes.

3. Use the usage fields that match how the request was billed
For completed requests, use the actual token counts returned in usage data when possible. Anthropic’s pricing documentation identifies input tokens, output tokens, cache-creation input tokens, and cache-read input tokens as relevant usage categories. Do not add cached tokens to the standard input total and price all of them at the uncached input rate; account for cache creation and cache reads using the applicable current rates.
For a request you have not sent yet, token counts are estimates unless you count the exact request using Anthropic’s supported workflow. A rough word- or character-to-token conversion is not an exact count. Leave room in a budget for variation, especially when prompts or generated responses vary in length.
4. Adjust the estimate for features that affect charges
Prompt caching
Include cache-creation and cache-read usage separately, and check the current rates for the exact model and cache duration. The cited documentation explains the cache pricing categories, but does not establish reliable current Haiku 4.5 rates for each cache duration. Do not substitute historical rates from an older model row.
Batch processing
Check the current batch rate for the exact model and request type rather than applying the standard synchronous rate automatically. Batch pricing can differ, and the visible pricing information cited here does not establish a reliable current Haiku 4.5 batch price.
Tools and web search
Tool definitions and tool-use content can contribute tokens to the request. Server-side tools may also carry separate usage-based charges. Anthropic’s web-search tool documentation says search use is charged in addition to token usage, while returned search results become input tokens; confirm the current separate fee on Anthropic’s tool pricing page before estimating it.

Treat the calculation as a planning estimate until you compare it with the account’s usage and billing records. The final charge can differ because of actual token counts, cache or batch rates, server-side feature fees, negotiated account terms, or taxes. For a current estimate, check Anthropic’s live pricing page for the exact model and applicable features, then calculate each usage category separately.
