To change tribe limits on a Soulmask dedicated server, edit WS/Saved/GameplaySettings/GameXishu.json while the server is stopped, then restart and verify the result. Launch arguments control server identity and runtime behavior—such as the name, ports, password, player cap, PvE/PvP mode, save interval, and backup interval—while gameplay coefficients and tribe settings are stored in the JSON file.

There are two configuration layers, and confusing them is the most common cause of unsuccessful changes.
Launch arguments
The server start command establishes the server’s identity and runtime controls. Depending on the package and startup method, these arguments cover the server name, game and query ports, password, maximum concurrent players, PvE or PvP mode, save interval, backup interval, administrator password, and RCON settings. A control panel may present these as fields rather than as a visible command line, but they still become launch options when the process starts.

Changing a launch option does not change a gameplay coefficient in the save data. For example, raising the player cap will not raise the number of players permitted in a tribe.
GameXishu.json
Gameplay coefficients, including tribe-related values, are read from WS/Saved/GameplaySettings/GameXishu.json. The server reads the file during startup. Stop the process before editing it and restart after saving; editing a live file can be overwritten by the running process or simply have no effect until the next launch.
The exact effective value can depend on the selected official template, server mode, and build. Treat the file as part of the server’s active configuration rather than as a universal list of rules that applies identically to every installation.
Prepare safely before changing a tribe setting
Use this sequence for every change, even if the edit looks small:
- Announce a maintenance window. Ask players to leave the server and record the intended setting, the template in use, and the current build.
- Stop the dedicated-server process cleanly. Use the host control panel’s Stop or Shut down action, or the service-management command used by your installation. Do not edit while the process is still writing saves.
- Back up both data locations. Copy the world save directory and
WS/Saved/GameplaySettings/GameXishu.jsonto a dated backup location. Keep the original file unchanged so a malformed edit can be reversed immediately. - Change one related group at a time. If you are adjusting tribe players and recruited tribesmen, make the edits together; avoid changing unrelated combat, resource, or progression coefficients in the same maintenance window.
- Preserve valid JSON. Keep quotation marks, commas, braces, and the existing key names intact. A missing comma or extra comma can prevent the file from loading.
- Start the server and wait for it to finish loading. A control panel showing “running” is not sufficient if the game process is still applying the save.
- Verify in-game. Check the tribe-management screen with a test account or inspect the relevant information through an administrator command. Record the value that actually took effect.
If the server fails to start after an edit, stop it, restore the last known-good JSON backup, and start again before attempting another change.
Changing the maximum tribe members
Locate the correct file
From the dedicated-server installation directory, open WS/Saved/GameplaySettings/GameXishu.json. The WS folder is relative to the server’s installation root, so a hosting panel may expose it under a file manager rather than at the top level of your account.

If the file is missing, confirm that you are browsing the server instance—not a client installation—and that the server has been started at least once. A first launch commonly creates the Saved and gameplay-settings folders. Do not create a second copy in a similarly named directory; the server will continue reading the original path.
Find the tribe member setting
Search the JSON for the tribe-management section or for the key used by your template. The developer-template reference identifies the tribe member cap in Management_Kunnan. A dedicated-server package build numbered 25117130 lists a cap of 20. Your file may contain additional keys and a different template value, so edit the existing key rather than pasting a block from another build.
Edit, restart, and verify
- With the server stopped and a backup complete, open the file in a text editor that does not add rich-text formatting.
- Change only the value associated with the tribe-member setting. Keep the value type expected by the file—normally a number—and do not rename the key.
- Save the file as UTF-8 text in the same location.
- Start the server and allow the world to load completely.
- Invite enough test characters to approach the new limit, or use the in-game tribe-management display to confirm the effective maximum.
- Record the result with the date, build, template, and file backup name. If the displayed value remains unchanged, follow the troubleshooting section instead of repeatedly editing the same number.
The number for tribe players is separate from the number of recruited tribesmen. Raising one does not automatically raise the other.
Default tribe-related limits
The following figures are documented defaults, not guarantees for every mode or build. The first figure comes from a developer-template reference for dedicated-server package build 25117130; the remaining values come from a hosting configuration table accessed in 2026. Verify each value after a restart because templates can override defaults.

Do not add the mask-node figures to the tribe-player cap. They describe separate capacity mechanics. Likewise, the recruited-tribesmen limit is not a second way to increase the number of human players in a tribe.
Templates, modes, and permitted ranges
Official templates can define both a default and an allowed range. The Soulsmask Systems Wiki documents settings such as TribalExplorationKaiGuan with explicit permitted ranges and defaults across multiple official templates. That variation is why copying a value from a different server, mode, or build can produce no visible change or can be rejected when the server loads.

How to account for template differences
- Write down the template selected when the server was created or last regenerated.
- Compare the key’s current value with the template’s documented default and range.
- Stay within the permitted range for that template unless the current build explicitly supports another value.
- After a restart, verify the effective setting in-game rather than assuming that the text in the file was accepted.
- If a template is changed, recheck every tribe coefficient; a new template can restore defaults or use different limits.
Build numbers, templates, and administrative interfaces change over time. The figures in this guide reflect information current to October 15, 2026, and should be rechecked if the guide or server is maintained more than 30 days later.
Becoming an administrator on a local dedicated server
Set the administrator password
Add an administrator password launch argument in the server startup configuration:
-adminpsw="choose-a-strong-unique-password"
Use a password that is not shared with ordinary players or reused for RCON. Restart the server after adding or changing the argument.
Authenticate from the in-game console
- Join the server with the account that should receive administrator access.
- Open the game’s console using the key binding configured for your installation.
- Run
gm key YOUR_ADMIN_PASSWORD, replacingYOUR_ADMIN_PASSWORDwith the exact value from-adminpsw. - Confirm that the GM panel or administrator controls become available.
If the command is rejected, check for a spelling mismatch, quotation marks accidentally included in the password, or a server that was not restarted after the launch argument changed.
Remote administration with Telnet or RCON
Loopback Telnet
The administrative reference documents loopback Telnet on the server’s EchoPort. “Loopback” means the connection originates on the same machine as the server, which avoids exposing the administrative endpoint to the public internet. Determine the EchoPort from the active server configuration, connect locally, and protect the machine account and firewall rules.
RCON
RCON uses a separate password and port. Add the RCON password and port to the launch configuration:

RCON access also requires a whitelisted IP in Engine.ini. Restrict the whitelist to the fixed address or trusted network that actually performs administration. Do not open the RCON port to every address just to make a remote connection work; narrow the firewall and whitelist after confirming connectivity.
Keep an audit record of who has RCON access, rotate the password when an administrator leaves, and test the connection after every game or server update. The exact client syntax depends on the RCON tool, while the server-side requirements are the launch password, port, and Engine.ini whitelist.
Useful GM commands and their risks
The community command reference lists these operations:

Command names and parameters can change between builds. Validate a command against the current build before using it on a live world, especially any command that transfers control or deletes data.

Soulmask tribes use rank-based permissions for tribe and base-management categories. A large member cap without a permission plan can turn a configuration change into a storage, building, or ownership incident.
Define ranks before recruiting broadly
- Owner or senior administrator: reserve ownership changes, configuration changes, deletion authority, and permission management for this rank.
- Builders and officers: grant the building and base-management actions needed for their role, but do not grant deletion or ownership powers by default.
- Resource and logistics members: allow the shared-storage access required for routine work; separate access to valuable or irreplaceable assets.
- General members: grant only the ability to use common facilities and participate in tribe activities.
- Guests or recruits: keep permissions minimal until the player’s identity and reliability are established.
Document what each rank can do
Write a short internal policy covering who may build, demolish, move or deploy shared assets, access storage, command recruited tribesmen, change permissions, invite or remove members, and use administrator tools. Review the policy whenever you raise a limit or add a new rank. A permission screen can show the current setting, but it does not explain why a member received access; the written policy supplies that operational context.

Troubleshooting changes that do not take effect
The file edit was ignored
Confirm that the server was stopped before editing and restarted afterward. Check the file path character for character: WS/Saved/GameplaySettings/GameXishu.json. A second copy under a backup, cache, or client directory will not be read by the dedicated server.
The server will not start
Restore the previous JSON backup. The usual causes are invalid JSON punctuation, an accidentally renamed key, a value written as text when the template expects a number, or an unsupported value outside the template’s permitted range. Start with the known-good file, then make one small change and test again.
The displayed limit is still the old value
Check that you changed the setting controlling the behavior you are testing. Tribe players, recruited tribesmen, tamed animals, ships, and mask-node additions are separate limits. Also verify the active template and build; a template can replace or constrain the value you entered.
Only some players see the change
Have every test player reconnect after the restart. A character’s existing tribe state or a stale session can make an old capacity appear to persist. Use an administrator inspection command and a fresh test invitation to distinguish a display issue from an actual server limit.

- Confirm that
-rconpswand-rconportare present in the active startup configuration. - Check that the connecting public IP is the one whitelisted in
Engine.ini. - Verify that the firewall permits the selected port only from the trusted address.
- For Telnet, connect from the server itself and use the configured EchoPort.
- Restart after changing launch arguments; panel edits that are not followed by a restart are not active.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
The configuration model is the same, but responsibility differs. Use these criteria when deciding where to run the server:

Whichever model you choose, verify that you can download the save, edit or inspect the gameplay settings, perform a restore, and reach the administrative console before inviting a large community.
Maintenance checklist
Use this checklist after initial setup and after every major update:
- Record the server build, selected template, mode, and date.
- Keep a dated copy of the world save and
GameXishu.json. - Confirm launch arguments for name, ports, password, player cap, mode, save interval, backup interval, and administrator or RCON access.
- Verify tribe-player, recruited-tribesmen, animal, ship, elephant, and mask-node values in-game.
- Test
gm keywith a non-owner administrator account. - Test RCON or loopback Telnet from the intended administration location.
- Review rank permissions for building, storage, tribesman control, ownership, deletion, and permission changes.
- Perform a manual save with
gm BaoCunbefore planned maintenance. - Document any rejected value or template-specific range so the next administrator does not repeat the failed edit.
- Recheck compatibility after updates; defaults, interfaces, command names, and supported limits can change.
Version and source scope
The tribe-cap figure is attributed to the Soulsmask Systems Wiki’s dedicated-server package build 25117130, extracted in 2026. The broader default table is attributed to a Citadel Servers knowledgebase page accessed in 2026. The configuration split between launch options and GameXishu.json is described in GamezServers documentation, while the command examples come from a community command reference. Because those sources describe different templates and publication dates, the active server’s file and post-restart behavior remain the authority for your installation.
