How to Fix “Akismet Can’t Connect to Server” in WordPress

A practical, evidence-based guide to Akismet’s “can’t connect to server” error: verify the key and canonical URL, test connectivity from the WordPress host, fix network controls, and distinguish account errors from transport failures.

The message is a symptom, not a diagnosis. In most cases, either the WordPress server cannot resolve or reach Akismet’s HTTPS service, or Akismet is receiving the request but rejecting the API key or site URL. Work from the server outward: capture the exact error, verify the key and canonical URL, test DNS and TCP 443 from the hosting machine, then check firewalls, proxies, TLS inspection, software compatibility, and the account plan.

Akismet sends comments and contact-form submissions to a remote spam database. Its documented key check is a POST request to https://rest.akismet.com/1.1/verify-key. A successful check returns valid; a failed connection may occur before Akismet can inspect the key at all.

What “can’t connect to server” means

A WordPress request passes through several distinct layers. Separating them prevents you from changing a valid key when the real problem is a hosting firewall, or opening a firewall when the URL sent for verification is wrong.

Layer What must work Typical evidence What a failure means
WordPress and plugin Akismet is active and its settings page can make an outbound request. A notice in the dashboard, a PHP warning, or a cURL/HTTP-API message. The request may not have been attempted, or the local runtime may be failing first.
DNS The hosting server resolves rest.akismet.com to an address. getent, dig, or nslookup returns an address. Resolver configuration, DNS filtering, or a temporary DNS outage is preventing the connection.
TCP and TLS The server can open outbound TCP 443 and complete HTTPS certificate negotiation. Verbose curl output shows a connection and TLS handshake. Egress filtering, a proxy requirement, certificate inspection, or an outdated TLS stack may be blocking the request.
Akismet verification The POST contains a valid key and the site’s complete front-page URL. The response body is valid, or an invalid response includes debug information. The key, URL, account status, or request data needs correction.

The WordPress.org listing describes Akismet as requiring an Akismet.com API key during activation; personal keys are free, while commercial sites use paid subscriptions. See the current listing at https://wordpress.org/plugins/akismet/.

Capture the exact failure before changing settings

Do not rely on the short sentence in a red or yellow dashboard banner. Open the notice, expand any details, and copy the complete text. Record the time in UTC, the WordPress and PHP versions, and whether the error appeared during initial activation, key verification, or normal comment processing.

  • Copy any HTTP status, such as a timeout, 403, 407, 495, or 5xx response.
  • Copy PHP, cURL, or WordPress HTTP-API messages verbatim. “Could not resolve host,” “connection timed out,” and “SSL certificate problem” point to different layers.
  • Look for X-akismet-alert-code and X-akismet-alert-msg. Akismet documents these headers as the way API errors can be reported to the caller.
  • When key verification is rejected, save any X-akismet-debug-help response information. It can distinguish malformed verification data from a transport failure.

Keep secrets out of screenshots and tickets. An API key can identify the account, so redact the value while leaving the surrounding error and headers readable.

Reconnect Akismet with the correct key and URL

Use the WordPress dashboard’s Akismet settings screen (the exact menu wording can vary by plugin version) to enter the key again. This is worthwhile only after you have copied the original error; otherwise a second attempt can erase useful evidence.

  1. Sign in as an administrator and open the Akismet settings from the WordPress dashboard.
  2. Enter the key issued for this site. If the account has more than one key, confirm that you selected the intended site or subscription.
  3. Check the site URL shown in the settings. It must be the complete canonical front-page URL, including https:// or http:// as actually used by the site. Include the correct host name, port when non-standard, and path for a site installed in a subdirectory. Do not substitute an administration URL, a staging address, or a bare host name.
  4. Save the setting and run the verification again. A successful response is the literal result valid, as described in Akismet’s key-verification documentation: https://akismet.com/developers/detailed-docs/key-verification/.
  5. If the response is invalid rather than unreachable, compare the key and URL character by character, then check whether the key belongs to a personal, commercial, or multisite installation. Preserve the invalid response and any debug-help information before trying another key.

The URL check matters even when the browser can load the site. Akismet verifies the URL supplied in the server-side request; a forced HTTPS redirect, changed domain, or WordPress Address/Site Address mismatch can make that value different from the address you use in a browser.

Test DNS and HTTPS from the WordPress host

A test from your laptop does not prove that the hosting server can reach Akismet. Run diagnostics through the hosting control panel’s terminal, an SSH session, or a temporary support session on the same machine and network that runs WordPress. Hosting providers use different shells and tools, so treat these as examples rather than a universal script.

1. Resolve the Akismet hostname

getent hosts rest.akismet.com

If getent is unavailable, try:

dig rest.akismet.com
nslookup rest.akismet.com

An address proves only that the configured resolver answered. “Name or service not known,” a timeout, or an empty answer calls for a DNS investigation with the host. Check which resolver the server uses, whether a security product filters external DNS, and whether the problem affects other public domains. Do not change DNS records for your website merely because the server cannot resolve an external service.

2. Test an outbound HTTPS connection

curl -v --connect-timeout 10 --max-time 20 https://rest.akismet.com/1.1/verify-key

The endpoint is documented for POST verification, so a GET may return an application-level method or parameter error. That is still useful: if verbose output shows DNS resolution, a TCP connection, certificate negotiation, and an HTTP response, the basic route to Akismet works. A timeout before “Connected,” a refused connection, or a certificate error identifies a transport problem rather than a bad key.

3. Reproduce the actual verification request

When you have permission to run a request from the WordPress host, use environment variables so the key is not saved in shell history or pasted into a ticket:

curl -sS -D - -X POST https://rest.akismet.com/1.1/verify-key
  --data-urlencode "api_key=${AKISMET_API_KEY}"
  --data-urlencode "blog=${SITE_URL}"

Set AKISMET_API_KEY to the real key and SITE_URL to the exact canonical front-page URL before running the command. The headers and body let you distinguish a transport failure, an HTTP error, and an application response such as valid. Never publish the resulting request, because the command contains a credential.

4. Inspect certificate negotiation when needed

openssl s_client -connect rest.akismet.com:443 -servername rest.akismet.com

This is a lower-level check. A handshake that cannot complete can indicate an old OpenSSL runtime, a proxy performing TLS inspection, or a certificate chain that the server does not trust. Compare the certificate issuer and verification output with the hosting provider’s documented trust store. Do not disable certificate verification in WordPress as a workaround; that converts a connectivity problem into a security vulnerability.

Remove network controls that block the request

If DNS works but the HTTPS test fails, investigate controls between the WordPress process and the public internet. Akismet does not publish one checklist that covers every host, so the exact fix depends on your provider and security architecture.

Outbound firewall or egress policy

Some managed hosts allow inbound web traffic but restrict outbound connections. Ask whether the account can make external HTTPS requests and whether TCP 443 to rest.akismet.com is denied. If an allowlist is required, request an exception for the documented hostname rather than a broad “allow all” rule. A rule based only on a changing IP address can break when Akismet’s infrastructure changes.

HTTP or HTTPS proxy

Corporate and managed networks may require an explicit proxy. Check the PHP-FPM or web-server service environment, not only the shell session in which you ran curl. A proxy that demands authentication commonly produces an HTTP 407; a proxy that blocks unknown destinations may return 403 or reset the connection. Configure the proxy through the host’s supported WordPress or PHP mechanism and test again. Do not paste proxy credentials into a plugin setting unless the host documents that method.

TLS inspection and certificate trust

Security gateways that decrypt and re-encrypt HTTPS traffic issue their own certificate. The WordPress server must trust that gateway’s certificate authority, and the gateway must permit the Akismet endpoint. If the error says the certificate issuer is unknown, have the host correct its CA bundle or inspection policy. Turning off peer or hostname verification is not an acceptable repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

IPv4 and IPv6 differences

A resolver can return both address families while the host has a broken IPv6 route. Compare a verbose connection using the server’s normal settings with an IPv4-only test such as curl -4 -v https://rest.akismet.com/1.1/verify-key, if your host permits it. A difference is evidence for the provider; it is not a reason to hard-code an Akismet IP address.

Compare networks and WordPress environments

When production fails, test from a staging host on the same provider and, if allowed, from a separate provider. A successful request elsewhere narrows the fault to DNS, egress filtering, proxy policy, or certificate inspection on the failing environment. It does not prove that production’s API key is valid, because the test may use a different URL or account.

Record the comparison in a small table for your host:

Environment DNS result HTTPS result Verification result Useful inference
Production Address or failure text Connection, timeout, or certificate result valid, invalid, or no response Identifies the layer that fails on the live site.
Staging or second host Address or failure text Connection, timeout, or certificate result Result using its own URL and key A difference points to host or network policy, not automatically to Akismet.

Do not copy a production key into an unprotected staging site simply to test connectivity. Use the account and URL appropriate to each environment, and remember that a staging domain may not be covered by a commercial plan.

Update the WordPress and PHP stack carefully

The current WordPress.org listing shows Akismet 5.7.2, with WordPress 5.8 or newer and PHP 7.2 or newer listed as requirements. Confirm the installed versions under Dashboard → Updates and your hosting panel before updating. The listing is the authoritative place to check whether those numbers have changed: https://wordpress.org/plugins/akismet/.

  1. Take a verified backup of the database and files, and test that the backup can be restored.
  2. Update WordPress, PHP, and Akismet in a staging environment first when the site is business-critical.
  3. Check that the hosting runtime has a working WordPress HTTP transport and current CA certificates. If the host manages PHP, ask it to verify the cURL/OpenSSL transport rather than installing random extensions yourself.
  4. Retest key verification and submit a test comment while watching the server log.

Akismet’s 5.6 changelog says setup-error explanations and usage-limit messaging were improved. Updating can therefore make the notice more informative, but it cannot repair a firewall that blocks outbound HTTPS.

Check the account type, subscription, and usage

A plan problem and a connection problem look different. If the server reaches Akismet and receives an account or usage message, resolve the account issue; changing DNS will not help. Akismet describes Personal protection separately from Pro for professional or commercial sites, Business for large networks and multisite, and Enterprise for tailored large organizations.

Plan information published by Akismet What it means for troubleshooting
Personal keys are free. Suitable for qualifying personal use; a commercial site may need a paid subscription even when its network connection is healthy.
Pro: US$9.95 per month, billed yearly; one site and 500 spam calls per month. The price and allowance are the values shown on the pricing page accessed 2026-10-15. Confirm the current account terms before relying on them.
Business: US$49.95 per month, billed yearly; unlimited sites and 5,000 monthly spam checks. The page lists this for larger or multisite use. Confirm that the account covers every site sending checks.
Enterprise: tailored large-organization offering. Contact Akismet for terms; no universal price or quota is established here.

Current plan details are on https://akismet.com/pricing/. Prices, quotas, eligibility, and billing can change, so treat the account page as controlling. A usage-limit response is evidence that Akismet was reached successfully; it should not be reported as a generic server outage.

Read Akismet’s response headers

Akismet’s error documentation states that an API response may include an error code in the X-akismet-alert-code header. The companion X-akismet-alert-msg can contain a human-readable explanation. Capture both exactly, including capitalization and punctuation, and provide them to support. A missing header does not prove that the request never reached Akismet: an intermediary such as a proxy may have removed it, or the failure may have occurred before an HTTP response existed.

For key verification, an invalid response may include X-akismet-debug-help. Compare that information with the URL and key sent in the request. Do not repeatedly rotate keys without recording each result; doing so makes it harder to tell an account rejection from a malformed request.

Use this result-based decision path

  • DNS fails: give the resolver error and timestamp to the host, and ask whether outbound DNS is filtered. Retest after the host confirms a resolver change.
  • DNS works, but no TCP/TLS connection: investigate egress firewall rules, proxy requirements, IPv6 routing, and certificate inspection with the host.
  • HTTPS connects and returns an HTTP response, but verification is invalid: correct the API key or complete canonical URL, then check the account type and site coverage.
  • Verification returns a usage or account alert: review the subscription, quota, and number of sites before changing network settings.
  • Production fails while another host succeeds: compare the two hosts’ resolver, egress, proxy, and CA policies; the difference is more useful than another browser test.
  • Every environment fails with a service-side response: provide Akismet with the response headers, body, timestamps, and affected URLs so it can investigate the account or service.

Escalate with a complete support packet

Contact the hosting provider when the server cannot resolve the hostname, open TCP 443, or validate the certificate. Contact Akismet when the request reaches the endpoint but the key, account, or usage response remains unexplained. Send the same concise evidence to avoid a cycle of generic troubleshooting.

  • Exact WordPress and Akismet versions, PHP version, and hosting environment.
  • UTC timestamp and timezone of each failed attempt.
  • Exact dashboard error text and any HTTP, PHP, or cURL message.
  • DNS command output with private hostnames and credentials removed.
  • Verbose HTTPS result, including whether TCP and TLS completed.
  • HTTP status, response body, X-akismet-alert-code, X-akismet-alert-msg, and X-akismet-debug-help values when present.
  • The canonical site URL and plan type, with the API key redacted.

This evidence lets support identify whether the request was blocked before Akismet, rejected during verification, or accepted and stopped by an account limit. It also prevents a well-intentioned change—such as disabling TLS verification or opening unrestricted outbound access—from creating a larger security problem.

Keep the connection healthy after it works

Document the approved outbound path, proxy requirements, DNS resolver, and certificate policy in the site’s runbook. Monitor WordPress error logs for renewed timeouts and certificate warnings, and repeat a server-side verification test after moving hosts, changing domains, enabling a web-application firewall, or upgrading PHP. Keep Akismet and WordPress within the versions listed on the official plugin page, and review the account’s site coverage and usage before a launch or migration.
