Open WS/Saved/Logs/WS.log in the server installation directory before changing settings. The log tells you whether WSServer launched and whether Steam initialized.

Different symptoms point to different fixes. Do not begin with router settings if the executable never launches, and do not reinstall the server when the process is running normally but the query port is blocked.

A useful distinction is whether the operating system still shows a WSServer process. A missing process indicates a launch or dependency problem. A persistent process with successful Steam lines indicates that troubleshooting should move to reachability, visibility, or client compatibility.

Read the startup log before changing anything
The documented log is WS/Saved/Logs/WS.log below the dedicated-server installation directory. Open it immediately after a failed launch and again after each repair. The console and the log are more reliable than the in-game browser: on first run, the server’s invitation code is printed there, so its absence is useful evidence that startup did not complete.
The Soulmask Wiki FAQ gives two especially useful signatures:
- A successful Steam initialization includes
LogOnline: STEAM: [AppId: 2646460] Game Server API initialized 1, followed by Steam networking initialization. - A failed initialization can include
LogSteamShared: Warning: Steam Dedicated Server API failed to initializeandLogOnline: STEAM: [AppId: 0] Game Server API initialized 0.
These lines separate a Steam startup problem from a network visibility problem. If the successful AppID line appears and the process stays alive, move on to ports and reachability rather than repeatedly reinstalling Steam components. If the log ends before those lines, focus on the executable, working directory, files, and dependencies.
Keep the lines immediately before and after an error. A single warning can be secondary, while the final error before the process exits is often the actionable one. Compare a failed log with a successful launch after each change so you know which repair had an effect.
Repair Steam initialization and AppID 2646460
Soulmask’s dedicated server needs the game server AppID 2646460. A missing or misplaced platform-specific steam_appid.txt is a documented cause of the AppID 0 failure signature.
Windows location
- Stop the server completely, including any service or batch process that may restart it.
- Open the server’s current binaries directory:
WS/Binaries/Win64/. - Create or open a plain-text file named exactly
steam_appid.txt. Make sure Windows has not appended.txttwice and that the file is not namedsteam_appid.txt.txt. - Delete any existing contents and enter one line only:
2646460. Do not add quotes, spaces, or explanatory text. - Save the file, launch the server from the same installation, and check
WS.logforAppId: 2646460andinitialized 1.
Linux location reported by the community
A Linux support thread reports the same remedy in WS/Binaries/Linux/steam_appid.txt. If your Linux build uses that directory, create the file there with the single value 2646460, then restart and inspect the log. Treat this as a reported, build-specific remedy: the log must confirm that it worked on your installation.

If the log still shows AppID 0
- Confirm that the script launches the binaries directory you just edited, not an older copy left after an update.
- Check that the file is readable by the account running the server and that its name and capitalization match the platform path.
- Record the surrounding log lines, including any Steam runtime or shared-library warning. Do not infer a port problem from an AppID 0 result.
- Investigate Steam runtime availability and any conflicting Steam client process only after verifying the path and file contents.
Do not copy random files from another game or server into the installation before checking the exact build. A successful AppID line is the test that matters. If a hosting panel generates the command for you, inspect the panel’s actual installation path rather than assuming it uses the folder you opened manually.
Check game and query ports, firewall, and NAT
The FAQ lists UDP game port 8777 and UDP query port 27015 as defaults. Launch parameters can change both, so the values in your batch file, service definition, or control panel take precedence over the defaults. A port conflict can interfere with Steam initialization; blocked traffic or missing forwarding can make a healthy process invisible.

Use the ports the server actually starts with
- Open the launch script or service definition and note every explicit game or query-port parameter.
- If no override is present, begin with UDP 8777 and UDP 27015. If an override is present, use those values everywhere instead.
- Check the host for another process already using either configured port. A conflict must be removed or the Soulmask server must be assigned unused ports.
- Allow the server executable and both configured UDP ports through the host firewall. Apply the rule to the network profile the machine is actually using.
- If the host is behind a router, forward the same UDP ports to the host’s fixed LAN address. A forward to an old DHCP address will silently break after a reboot.
- Test from the correct side of the network: use the private address from a local client and the public address from outside the LAN. Include the configured port when a direct connection method asks for one.
If the process is healthy, the log shows successful Steam initialization, and the browser is empty, blocked query traffic or missing NAT mapping is more likely than a launch failure. Conversely, forwarding ports cannot repair an executable that exits before it binds them.
Do not forward only the query port and expect gameplay to work; the game port is needed for player connections. Conversely, opening ports on the router does not automatically create a host-firewall rule. Check both layers, and confirm that the router forwards UDP rather than only TCP.

Fix executable paths, working directories, and missing files
Updates can leave a working server installation beside an obsolete startup script. The script may still reference a pre-update folder, an old map name, or an executable that no longer exists. Run the script from the current dedicated-server directory and verify each path rather than assuming the installation manager updated your custom files.
Path and map checks
- Confirm that the target executable is the current
WSServerbinary for your platform. - Confirm that the map named in the launch command is present and spelled as the installed build expects.
- Set the script’s working directory to the dedicated-server installation directory before launching. Relative paths for configuration, logs, and binaries can fail when a script is started from a shortcut or another folder.
- Check that the account running the server can read the installation and write to
WS/Saved/Logs/. - Remove or correct duplicate installations so you know which copy is being updated and which copy is being launched.
Community-reported Windows DLL workaround
Windows community reports describe copying steamclient64.dll, tier0_s64.dll, vstdlib_s64.dll, and crashhandler64.dll from a Steam installation into the server’s binaries directory when the executable exits immediately. This is a community workaround, not a universal requirement. Back up the server first, verify that the files match the architecture and build you are running, and re-check after every server update because an older DLL can create a different failure.

If the process still closes with no useful log, treat it as a host executable or dependency problem. Reconfirm that the server installation completed, that security software did not quarantine a file, and that the startup account has permission to execute the binary. Avoid mixing files from different server versions; a mismatched dependency can replace one startup error with another.
Synchronize the client and dedicated-server builds
A game update can leave an apparently running server that no longer accepts connections from current clients. Hosting documentation identifies build mismatch as a common connection failure. Update the dedicated server through SteamCMD or your hosting control panel whenever the game client updates, then restart the server and the client.
- Stop the dedicated server cleanly.
- Run the server update mechanism and wait for it to finish rather than starting from a partially updated directory.
- Inspect the startup script for stale executable and map paths that still point to the previous installation.
- Start the updated server and confirm its current startup output in
WS.log. - Update and restart the client before testing a connection. Do not spend time changing passwords or router rules until both sides report compatible builds.
A stale script can make this especially confusing: the files may be updated in one folder while the script continues launching an older copy elsewhere. If the server worked until a patch and then every client receives a version-related failure, treat synchronization as the first test even when the process appears healthy.
Check host capacity and storage
Steam lists 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11 support, 16 GB of minimum RAM, 24 GB of recommended RAM, and 25 GB of available storage for Soulmask. An SSD is preferred. These are baseline game requirements, not a guarantee that a busy multiplayer dedicated server will perform well at the minimum.
- Use a 64-bit supported Windows host when running the Windows server build.
- Keep more than the stated 25 GB free if you need updates, logs, backups, or multiple world copies; an installation that fills the disk can stop writing logs or fail during an update.
- Watch memory and disk activity if the server starts successfully but crashes as players join. That pattern is different from an AppID or port failure.
- Do not interpret “recommended” RAM as a fixed player-count promise. World size, player activity, mods, and other services on the machine change the real load.
Capacity problems can appear after a successful launch, so note whether the crash happens only under player load. Preserve the final log lines before restarting; repeatedly relaunching can overwrite the evidence needed to separate memory pressure from a dependency or network fault.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting for recurring failures
If you repeatedly lose time to port forwarding, SteamCMD updates, or process restarts, managed hosting can remove some operating-system and network work. It does not remove the need to verify the game build, server settings, or provider-specific support.

Whichever model you choose, retain access to logs and confirm that the service supports the Soulmask build you intend to run. Automation is useful only when it launches the correct executable with the correct ports. Compare the recurring monthly price with the value of included backups, restart tools, support response, and the region your players need.

Support becomes much faster when you provide evidence instead of only saying that the server is offline. Keep the following together:
- The exact launch command or service configuration, with passwords removed.
- The final section of
WS.logfrom a failed start and from the first start after a change. - Whether a console window remains open and whether a process is visible in the operating system.
- The AppID line and any Steam runtime warning.
- The configured game and query ports, plus whether the host is behind NAT.
- The dedicated-server build and client build, and the date of the last update.
- Host operating system, available RAM, free storage, and whether the server crashes only under player load.
This record distinguishes a launch failure from a visibility failure and prevents repeatedly applying a fix that already failed.

Can minimum hardware run a dedicated server?
