Sony will stop producing discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028, but it is not ending support for games already released or due before then in disc format. Calling the move a “grave mistake” is a judgment, not an established fact: Sony’s own figures show digital downloads dominate full-game units, while its revenue data also show physical software is a small but still distinct part of its business. Nintendo has made no verified near-term commitment to keep physical games, so the claim that it will not follow Sony is a forecast, not confirmed policy.
What Sony is changing in January 2028
Sony’s announcement concerns physical disc production for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles. Starting in January 2028, new games will be sold digitally through PlayStation Store and at retailers, according to Sony’s PlayStation Blog announcement. Sony says games already released, or scheduled to release before January 2028 in disc format, are unaffected by the transition.

That scope matters. This is not an announcement that existing discs will stop working, that Sony will withdraw previously released disc games, or that every PlayStation game becomes inaccessible without a download. The announced cutoff is about producing discs for new releases after the date. Sony has not, in the cited announcement, detailed every operational consequence for retailers or future hardware.
Why the digital shift makes business sense to Sony
Sony says consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry are shifting away from physical discs. Its reported sales metrics support the narrower claim that digital is already the dominant format for full-game units on PlayStation, though they do not establish what every player wants or whether the policy is strategically sound.

Digital units dominate, but that is not the same as revenue
In Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Q1 FY2026 reporting, full-game digital downloads accounted for 82% of PS4 and PS5 full-game units. Sony defines the ratio as digitally transacted full-game units divided by total full-game units. The figure is a unit share for the stated platforms and reporting period, not a measure of revenue or a market-by-market survey of consumer preference. See Sony’s investor-relations materials.
Physical software still appears in the revenue mix
Sony Group’s FY2024 Game & Network Services sales breakdown listed physical software at 3% of revenue, digital software at 20%, and add-on content at 29%. These are revenue-source percentages, not unit shares; they cannot be directly compared with the 82% download ratio. The figures show that physical software was a small share of that segment’s revenue, not that it had no remaining commercial or consumer value. The breakdown is in Sony’s FY2024 Corporate Report.

A publisher-level estimate points in the same broad direction but uses a different method and scope. Electronic Arts estimated that digital sales made up 78% of its total game units on Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, and PS5 in FY2025, compared with 73% in FY2024 and 68% in FY2023. EA’s estimate combines platform-reported digital units with estimates for packaged goods, and covers EA’s own titles across those platforms; it is not a Sony-wide measurement. The figures are described in EA’s SEC filing.

The strongest case for Sony’s decision is operational and commercial: digital sales are already a large share of PlayStation full-game units, and eliminating new disc production may let Sony concentrate resources on digital distribution and other ways to access games. Sony says it intends to keep offering buyers a choice of where to purchase new games, including retailers and PlayStation Store. That retailer choice does not preserve the option to buy a new physical disc after the cutoff.

The strongest case against the decision is about the functions discs serve beyond launching a game. Physical copies can be lent, resold, collected, and—in some cases—used without repeatedly depending on a digital storefront or a download. A digital purchase is typically tied to an account and platform policies rather than being a transferable disc. The announcement and sales figures cited here do not quantify how much players value those differences, or what proportion would change their buying habits if new disc releases disappear.
Sony reports more than 1.706 billion cumulative PS4 and PS5 software units sold in, as of June 30, 2026. That total includes physical and download-only titles, PS VR titles, and bundled software, so it is a measure of cumulative volume rather than evidence of demand for discs. See Sony’s investor-relations materials.

For preservation, the relevant issue is not simply whether a box or disc exists. A physical copy can retain practical value, but some games still rely on downloads, patches, online services, or other platform dependencies. The available company statements and sales reports do not establish how this policy will affect long-term access to individual games. It is reasonable to treat reduced physical availability as a risk for players who value lending, resale, collecting, and options outside a digital storefront; it is not evidence by itself that every game will become unplayable.
Will Nintendo go all digital too?
There is no verified answer in Nintendo’s published materials cited here. Nintendo’s investor-relations hub provides routes to its corporate policies and sales reporting, but it does not substantiate a firm near-term promise to maintain physical releases or rule out an all-digital console. The prediction that Nintendo will not copy Sony “anytime soon” should therefore be read as an outlook, not a company commitment.
Best Value
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
It is plausible that Nintendo would weigh its own customers, products, and distribution economics before making a similar change. But the available evidence does not establish what those calculations are or when Nintendo might act. Current format availability is not a guarantee about future hardware strategy.
Quick Recap
What to watch before judging the outcome
- Whether retailer choice remains meaningful: Sony says new games will still be available through retailers as well as PlayStation Store, but the announcement does not specify how retailers will participate after disc production ends.
- How access works over time: The practical impact on downloads, storefront availability, and game preservation depends on details beyond the stated disc cutoff.
- How players respond: Sony’s 82% digital ratio describes current full-game units, not whether players will accept a future without new disc releases or whether some will switch platforms.
- What Nintendo actually announces: Until Nintendo states a policy, claims about its next hardware or physical-release plans remain speculation.
