The proposed NPCs could imitate aspects of a player’s or a friend’s play style, or fill a squad slot when human teammates are unavailable. The patent grant does not show that Sony has put the system into a released game.
What Sony’s patent proposes
The patent, titled “Systems and methods for generating nonplayer characters according to gameplay characteristics,” describes an AI model that learns characteristics from game data, play history, scores, and style of play, then uses them to generate NPCs for squad-based games. The published patent application gives examples such as weapon choice, attack direction, and skill level.

In practical terms, a game could use the learned tendencies to create an AI teammate that behaves like the player, or like a friend whose gameplay data is available. It could also provide custom AI players to fill in when human teammates cannot join. The patent describes these as possible uses, not as features tested in a released game.

The proposed process centers on gameplay characteristics rather than a simple, fixed teammate preset. The model learns from data associated with one or more users and uses the resulting characteristics to configure the NPC. The patent description says: “The AI model is trained to have a percentage of gameplay characteristics learned from gameplay by the one the users and a percentage of gameplay characteristics from gameplay by another one of the users.” That wording is quoted from the patent description, including its awkward phrasing.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
This suggests the system could combine characteristics from different players, rather than relying on only one person’s style. The document does not provide a named statistical figure or measured result establishing how accurately an NPC would reproduce a player’s behavior.
Why Sony says it could be useful
The patent presents squad availability as one motivation: an AI teammate could make squad play possible when other people are unavailable. It also describes an alternative to potential teammates who are disruptive. These are stated aims, not demonstrated outcomes or guarantees about how a finished game would work.

Is this coming to a Sony game?
The patent establishes that Sony has a granted patent describing and claiming the proposed system; it does not establish that the company has implemented it in a released game or announced a product using it. The patent description also does not report a measured result for the approach. A grant alone is not a release announcement.

A separate Sony NPC-personalization filing
Sony has also filed US20250235789A1, a separate application concerning NPC personalization and electronic game control. That disclosure describes a user initiating personalization and possible use of audio, text, or image data, including filtering personal data and changing an NPC’s actions, appearance, or communication style. It is distinct from U.S. Patent 12,728,355: the latter focuses on generating squad NPCs from gameplay characteristics, while the separate application addresses broader NPC personalization. The separate application is an application, not the same granted patent.
