Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe choice comes down first to how each pair attaches: Sony LinkBuds Clip uses a C-shaped frame that clips around the ear without entering the canal, while Shokz OpenFit uses an ear hook. Pick the design that feels secure and comfortable on your ears; neither can be called universally more comfortable. Sony publishes longer maximum battery-life claims and three named listening modes. Shokz publishes an IP54 rating for its earbuds, which may appeal if you prefer an around-the-ear hook and prioritize that rating.
How do the clip and ear-hook designs differ?
Sony LinkBuds Clip: a C-shaped frame
The LinkBuds Clip sits around the outer ear rather than entering the ear canal. Sony says its included fitting cushions can help adjust the fit. That description explains the design, not a guarantee that the clip will suit every ear shape or pressure preference.

Shokz OpenFit: an ear hook
OpenFit uses an around-the-ear hook and Shokz’s DirectPitch air-conduction approach. The main practical distinction is the sensation and support of a hook versus Sony’s clip frame. If you are sensitive to pressure or unsure about either design, try the fit before committing where possible.

Comfort reports are individual. In a January 21, 2026 review, Tom’s Guide’s reviewer described the Sony clip as tight and uncomfortable for both the reviewer and their wife. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a controlled comparison with OpenFit or a prediction for every wearer. Read the Tom’s Guide review.

How do their published specifications compare?
| Feature | Sony LinkBuds Clip | Shokz OpenFit |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | C-shaped clip; does not enter the ear canal. Fitting cushions are included. | Ear-hook design with DirectPitch air-conduction approach. |
| Battery claim | Up to 9 hours per charge; up to 37 hours with the case, according to Sony. | Up to 7 hours per charge; up to 28 hours with the case, according to Shokz. |
| Water resistance | IPX4, per Sony. Sony’s FAQ says the case is not water resistant and excludes the sound outlet from its splash-protection description. | IP54 for earbuds, per Shokz. The case is not waterproof; Shokz advises against submersion and does not recommend heavy rain. |
| Listening features | Standard, Voice Boost, and Sound Leakage Reduction modes; 10-band EQ, app customization, and multipoint, per Sony. | App-based EQ and control customization, plus multipoint pairing, per Shokz. |
| Call features | Sony describes AI voice processing and a bone-conduction voice pickup sensor. | Shokz specifies two microphones on each earbud. |
The battery figures are manufacturers’ maximum claims, not independent measurements or guaranteed everyday runtime. Sony published its figures in 2026; Shokz’s current product page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists OpenFit’s figures and a June 2023 launch. Usage and conditions affect actual results. The listed call hardware and processing features do not establish that one pair sounds better on calls in every environment. App functions may change with software or region.
Water-resistance ratings and manufacturer caveats are not interchangeable with waterproofing. Sony specifies IPX4 for LinkBuds Clip; Shokz specifies IP54 for OpenFit earbuds and says not to submerge them or use them in heavy rain. Follow each manufacturer’s use guidance rather than treating either rating as protection against every exposure.

Which one should you choose?
Choose Sony LinkBuds Clip if…
- You prefer a clip-style frame that does not enter the ear canal, and that shape feels comfortable and secure on you.
- Sony’s three selectable modes—Standard, Voice Boost, and Sound Leakage Reduction—match how you expect to use open-ear earbuds.
- You value Sony’s higher published maximum battery claims: up to 9 hours per charge and up to 37 hours with the case.
Choose Shokz OpenFit if…
- You prefer the feel of an ear hook around the ear.
- Shokz’s published IP54 rating for the earbuds is important to your decision, while its restrictions on submersion and heavy rain remain acceptable.
- You want Shokz’s app EQ and control customization with multipoint pairing.
These are preference-based recommendations, not a performance ranking. The available sources do not establish a controlled, direct comparison of these exact models for comfort, sound, calls, or battery life. Sony announced LinkBuds Clip in January 2026; Shokz lists OpenFit as a June 2023 launch. The newer release date does not, by itself, show that one performs better.

What should you know about price and everyday use?
Sony lists a US suggested retail price of $229.99. Shokz displayed a US price of $159.95 on its product page when accessed October 7, 2026, but that page also showed OpenFit as sold out. These are manufacturer-page figures, not confirmation of a current transaction price or available stock. Check retailer price and availability before buying; Sony identifies Sony.com, Amazon, Best Buy, and authorized dealers as US sales channels.

Both are open-ear designs, so surrounding sound remains audible rather than being blocked like it is by sealed noise-isolating earbuds. That can be useful when you want to hear some of your environment, but it is not a substitute for paying attention to traffic and other hazards.
