Whether it is worth buying depends on its current price beside newer, similarly sized TVs.
What the Sony KD-65X77L offers
Sony’s US specifications identify the KD-65X77L as a 2023 model with a 64.5-inch diagonal LCD screen, 3840 × 2160 resolution, Direct LED backlighting and frame dimming. The panel’s native refresh rate is 60 Hz. Sony also markets Motionflow XR 240, but that label does not make this a 240 Hz panel. Sony’s specifications are for the US model; regional versions may differ.

How is its picture for TV, sports and movies?
Everyday and daytime viewing
The 4K resolution, Google TV apps and Sony’s 4K Processor X1 and 4K X-Reality Pro make this a straightforward set for streaming, broadcast TV and general viewing. Sony says 4K X-Reality PRO upscales 2K and HD favorites “close to 4K quality,” while noting that results vary with source content. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent picture-quality measurement. Sony’s product page describes the feature.
RTINGS’ review of the X77L/X77CL series says the set is decent for shows or sports during the day and for wide seating, but is not well suited to bright rooms. If the TV will face strong daylight or direct reflections, the reviewer’s assessment is a reason to compare brighter models rather than assume the Sony’s processing will overcome the room.

Dark-room movies and HDR
Sony lists HDR10 and HLG support, but format compatibility does not guarantee a striking HDR image. RTINGS describes HDR performance as limited by low peak brightness, low contrast, no local dimming and limited color gamut. It also reports that dark-room movies suffer from washed-out blacks and the lack of local dimming. Dolby Vision is not listed in Sony’s specifications, so do not buy this model expecting that format on the basis of the available product information.
Is the Sony X77L good for PS5 or other gaming?
It can handle casual console gaming, but it is not equipped for players seeking the motion and variable-refresh features of higher-end gaming TVs. Sony specifies a native 60 Hz panel and lists ALLM on HDMI 3; it does not list VRR. RTINGS reports low input lag in Game mode, while noting the 60 Hz ceiling, lack of VRR and one-port restriction for ALLM. Sony’s FAQ addresses its PS5 suitability and feature details at Sony’s X77L product FAQ.
Port choice matters if you also connect an eARC soundbar or receiver: Sony identifies HDMI 3 as the ALLM/eARC port. Depending on your equipment and which features you prioritize, you may need to plan connections around that shared port or select Game picture mode manually. This is a consideration based on the port specifications, not a tested setup recommendation.

Ports and audio
Besides its three HDMI inputs, Sony lists two USB ports, Ethernet, Wi-Fi on 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, and Bluetooth 5.0. The built-in audio uses two full-range bass-reflex speakers; Sony specifies 10 W + 10 W output and Dolby Audio. eARC/ARC support leaves the option to connect external audio, but whether that is worthwhile depends on your room and expectations.

Is the KD-65X77L worth buying?
It is a plausible choice if you want a 65-inch 4K Google TV for routine streaming, daytime shows and broad seating, and you find it at a competitive current price. Its listed smart features and familiar connectivity are conveniences, not proof that its picture is class-leading. For dark-room movie viewing, impactful HDR, or high-refresh-rate console gaming, the independent review and specifications point toward comparing other models.
No current cross-retailer street price or inventory is established here, so there is no sound basis for declaring it a value winner. Before deciding, compare available 65-inch alternatives on current price, refresh rate and VRR, HDMI gaming support, contrast and local dimming, HDR brightness and color gamut, smart platform, and installation dimensions. The specifications cited above are from Sony’s US pages; availability and regional variants can differ.
