Sony specifies a native 60 Hz panel, and independent testing of the 65-inch version, which RTINGS says also represents the 55-inch model, found low input lag but weak contrast and limited HDR impact.
What is the Sony KD-55X77L?
The KD-55X77L is Sony’s 2023 entry-level 4K LED television. Its LCD panel measures 54.6 inches diagonally, has a 3840 × 2160 resolution and uses a direct LED backlight with frame dimming. Sony lists the native refresh rate as 60 Hz, with HDR10 and HLG support. Sony also advertises Motionflow XR 240, but that processing label does not make this a native 240 Hz television. Sony’s specifications distinguish the 60 Hz panel refresh from its processing features.

The set runs Google TV and includes Sony’s 4K Processor X1 and 4K X-Reality Pro processing. Sony describes the processor as delivering “lifelike picture quality full of rich colors and detailed contrast”; that is manufacturer copy, not a measured performance result. Sony’s product page lists the platform and PS5 picture features.
How good is the picture for everyday viewing?
Moderately lit rooms and shared seating
RTINGS describes the X77L as adequate for shows and sports in a moderately lit room. It also found that the image remains reasonably consistent when viewed from an angle, a useful trait when several people are seated across a room. These are qualitative findings, not guarantees for every room or viewing position.

RTINGS bought and tested the 65-inch version and says its results also apply to the 55-inch model. The findings below should therefore be read as evidence about the series, not as measurements taken from a 55-inch test unit. RTINGS’ X77L/X77CL review also notes that its panel details for the 50-inch size are uncertain.
Dark scenes and HDR
The main picture-quality trade-off is black level. RTINGS found low contrast and no local dimming, so dark scenes are less convincing than on a television that can control light in separate screen zones. This makes the X77L a weaker option for movie watching in a dark room.

HDR10 and HLG support means the TV accepts those HDR formats, but format support alone does not ensure a pronounced HDR effect. RTINGS found low peak brightness and no wide color gamut, limiting the visible impact of HDR. Consumer Reports’ search excerpt also flags limited peak brightness as a constraint on HDR benefit, but does not provide a basis here for more detailed performance claims. RTINGS also found poor smoothing of low-quality source material. If much of your viewing comes from low-resolution or heavily compressed video, that is a relevant limitation alongside the set’s contrast and brightness performance.

Can the KD-55X77L handle PS5 gaming?
Yes, for casual gaming at up to 60 frames per second, it can be responsive: RTINGS reports low input lag in Game picture mode. The more important limitation is capability, not basic responsiveness. This is a 60 Hz TV with no VRR, so it is not suited to 4K/120 Hz play or variable-refresh-rate features sought by owners of newer consoles.
Sony lists Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) on HDMI 3; RTINGS likewise reports ALLM on only one HDMI port. The TV also offers PS5 Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode. Sony says the PS5 must connect directly to the TV for these features, and Auto HDR Tone Mapping must be enabled during initial pairing or setup. What smart TV and connection features does it have?
Google TV provides the smart-TV interface, with Google Play Store, voice search and 16 GB of onboard storage listed by Sony. Wireless features include Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, Chromecast built-in, Apple AirPlay and HomeKit. Voice control requires a Google account, and app availability, service terms and software can vary by region or change over time.

There are three side-mounted HDMI inputs and two side-mounted USB ports, with eARC/ARC support for connecting a soundbar or other audio equipment. Sony specifies ALLM for HDMI 3; check the port assignment before connecting a console if you want the automatic low-latency feature. Sony specifies a 300 × 300 mm VESA mounting pattern and a weight of 33.8 lb (15.3 kg) without the stand. Use those figures when choosing a mount, then confirm its weight rating and that it is compatible with your wall and installation surface. Who should buy the Sony KD-55X77L?
It makes the most sense for someone seeking a straightforward Google TV for everyday streaming and television in a moderately lit room, with casting support and responsive basic gaming. It is a poor match if your priorities are deep blacks for dark-room films, a strong HDR presentation, very bright-room viewing, or 4K/120 Hz and VRR gaming.
No live retail price or competing model price is established here, so there is no defensible price-based verdict. Before buying, compare the current local price and availability with alternatives by checking native refresh rate, VRR and ALLM support, contrast and local dimming, HDR brightness and color gamut, viewing-angle behavior, casting and smart platform, HDMI count, and eARC/ARC. Verify the exact model, screen size, condition and region in any listing.
