The Sony K-65XR50—sold in the US as the 65-inch BRAVIA 5—is a 2025 4K Mini LED LCD TV that delivers strong contrast, crisp detail, natural-looking color and capable motion handling. It is a persuasive mid-range choice for films and 4K/120 Hz console gaming, but it is not a substitute for Sony’s brighter, more finely controlled BRAVIA 7: the K-65XR50 has less HDR headroom, fewer dimming zones, and only two HDMI ports with the full set of gaming features.
What is the Sony K-65XR50?
K-65XR50 is Sony’s US model identifier for the 65-inch 2025 BRAVIA 5. It is an LCD television with a Mini LED backlight, local dimming and 3840 × 2160 resolution. Sony specifies a native 120 Hz panel, HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision support, and Google TV with Gemini on its US product listing. Sony’s US listing and model specifications identify the product and its features. The model name and availability can vary by region, so check the regional SKU rather than assuming every BRAVIA 5 has the same designation.

How good is its picture?
Contrast and local dimming
Contrast is the BRAVIA 5’s main strength. TechRadar’s review, published in 2026, describes a crisp, vibrant and contrast-rich image. Its reviewer counted about 240 dimming zones and measured nearly 900 nits on a 10% HDR window and 595 nits on a full-field HDR window. Those are review measurements under the publication’s test conditions, not manufacturer guarantees; the two window sizes also illustrate why a small bright highlight and a mostly bright screen can look different.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhat Hi-Fi?’s December 19, 2025 review likewise found stable-looking blacks and limited obvious blooming in its viewing, while noting that very dark scenes can look greyer than on Sony’s higher-tier BRAVIA 7 or BRAVIA 9. Local dimming helps control bright objects against dark backgrounds, but it does not make the BRAVIA 5 equivalent to those step-up models.

Detail, color and motion
Both reviews praise the television’s detailed 4K image, color handling and motion performance. TechRadar also highlights its HD upscaling. What Hi-Fi? points to the MotionFlow True Cinema option as useful for 24-frame-per-second films. Its review describes the Standard picture mode as balanced, making it a sensible starting point if you do not want to tune the image extensively.
Brightness and HDR format limits
The measured brightness is respectable in the cited review, but TechRadar found the BRAVIA 5 less bright than the BRAVIA 7, with fewer dimming zones. Buyers seeking maximum HDR punch in a bright room should consider that trade-off rather than treating “Mini LED” as a guarantee of flagship brightness. The listed HDR formats are Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG; TechRadar notes that HDR10+ is not supported.

Is the K-65XR50 good for gaming?
For a current console setup targeting 4K at up to 120 Hz, the feature set is capable: Sony lists VRR on HDMI 3 and 4, ALLM on HDMI 1 through 4, and dedicated PS5 features. TechRadar measured 13.3 ms input lag at 60 Hz with the TV in low-latency mode in its review; that result is specific to its test, refresh rate and mode, not a universal figure for every signal.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The port allocation is the practical catch. Sony lists four HDMI inputs, but TechRadar reports that only two support the full gaming feature set, including 4K/120 Hz. If you have several high-bandwidth consoles or a PC alongside them, you may need to swap cables or use an HDMI switch that supports the formats you need. For PC gaming, the TV has no 144 Hz or 165 Hz mode and TechRadar reports no AMD FreeSync or Nvidia G-Sync support. It is therefore a better fit for 4K/120 Hz console play than for a PC setup that depends on higher refresh rates or those variable-refresh technologies.

How does it compare with the BRAVIA 7?
The BRAVIA 7 is the relevant same-brand step-up if brightness and dark-scene control matter more than keeping the price down. TechRadar reports that it is brighter and has more dimming zones; What Hi-Fi? also found very dark material greyer on the BRAVIA 5 than on the BRAVIA 7 or 9. The available reviews do not establish a current like-for-like price gap, so compare live prices for the exact sizes and regional models before deciding whether the improvement is worth the extra cost.
The BRAVIA 5 makes more sense when its lower tier meets your needs: Sony’s picture processing, strong contrast, and 4K/120 Hz console support are the priorities, while the BRAVIA 7’s extra brightness and finer dimming are not essential. Neither the model name nor the Mini LED label alone establishes how it will perform in every room; lighting, screen size and your viewing position matter too.

What are the sound and smart-TV features like?
TechRadar describes the built-in audio as clean and detailed, but says bass is light. That may be adequate for dialogue and everyday viewing; viewers who want stronger low end can add a soundbar through the TV’s eARC/ARC connection. A soundbar is an optional upgrade, not a requirement for using the television.
Sony’s US listing identifies the set as a Google TV with Gemini. App availability and software features can depend on region and change over time, so confirm that the services you use are offered for the specific regional model. The evidence cited here does not establish a single app lineup for all markets.

Will it fit your stand or wall?
Sony lists the 65-inch model at 57 × 32.88 × 2.38 inches and 54.9 pounds without its stand. With the stand in the inside configuration, the listed dimensions are 57 × 34 × 13.63 inches and the weight is 58 pounds. Measure the furniture and allow for the stand’s position before installation.
The listed VESA mounting pattern is 300 × 300 mm. For a wall mount, choose a compatible bracket rated above the television’s 54.9-pound weight without the stand, and verify that it suits the wall construction and installation method. Confirm clearances and mounting details against the manual for your exact regional model.
What does the Sony K-65XR50 cost?
When Sony’s US store listing was observed on October 7, 2026, it showed $1,399.99, $100 below a listed $1,499.99 price. The listing also advertised a $100 soundbar bundle discount. These were time-sensitive US offers, not a guaranteed current price or a price for other regions; check the live listing and retailer terms before purchase. Sony’s product page is the source for that observed listing.

Value depends on the price you can actually buy it for. TechRadar’s review considers cheaper value-oriented 65-inch alternatives relevant competition, but older review prices are not a reliable guide to what those sets cost now. Compare current prices and specifications, especially brightness, dimming performance and gaming connections, rather than relying on a historical price comparison.
Quick Recap
Who should buy the BRAVIA 5?
- A good match: viewers who value Sony’s image processing, detailed 4K picture, controlled contrast and motion handling, or want 4K/120 Hz console gaming.
- Consider a different tier or model: if a very bright room and maximum HDR impact are your priorities, or if you need 144 Hz-plus PC gaming, FreeSync or G-Sync.
- Check your setup first: the count of HDMI ports supporting the full gaming feature set matters if several consoles or a PC must remain connected at once. If you rely on broad viewing angles, look for evidence specific to your seating layout before buying.
- Plan audio to taste: the built-in sound is described as clear, but stronger bass may call for an eARC/ARC soundbar.
