Keep services loosely coupled by grouping work around cohesive business capabilities, giving each service a clear contract and ownership of its data, and choosing communication patterns that fit the response the caller needs. Then check the design against real operating evidence: frequent cross-service calls or coordinated deployments may mean the boundary is wrong. More services are not automatically better; splitting functionality adds distributed-system and consistency costs.
How should you choose service boundaries?
Start with the business domain, not technical layers. Identify business capabilities and bounded contexts, then give each candidate service a focused responsibility that encapsulates domain knowledge behind an interface. A service organized around a horizontal concern such as data access or messaging is less likely to own a coherent business outcome.

Treat the first boundary map as a hypothesis, not a final blueprint. Microsoft’s guidance describes boundary evaluation as iterative: team size, data types, scale, availability, and security can all affect whether a capability should be split or kept together. Its practical advice is to be pragmatic and revisit the design as you learn more. Microsoft Learn: Identify microservice boundaries
Test a proposed split
- Does each service have a focused responsibility and a coherent business purpose?
- Can a small team own and build it?
- Can it be deployed without coordinating a release with another service?
- Can it change without forcing simultaneous updates elsewhere?
- Will the split create frequent cross-service calls or require strong consistency between the parts?
If related functions change together or need repeated, chatty interaction, keeping them together may be the less coupled design. A boundary is useful when it creates meaningful independence, not merely when it produces another deployable unit. Microsoft defines a microservice as self-contained and responsible for a single business capability within a bounded context. Microsoft Learn: Microservices Architecture Style

How do you expose interfaces and keep data private?
Publish stable, domain-oriented APIs that hide internal implementation. A service should own its data model; other services should not depend directly on its tables or schema. They can request information through the owning service’s API or consume events it publishes.
A shared database server does not by itself require shared ownership. Separate schemas and tables can remain independently owned, but shared schemas or direct cross-service table access create structural coupling: an internal change by one service can break another without a contract change. Make replicated data’s authority explicit
When a service keeps a local copy of another service’s data, identify which service is the source of truth and how much delay consumers can tolerate. Replication can make reads more independent, but it does not make copies instantly consistent. Prefer eventual consistency when the use case allows it; when strong consistency is necessary, keep a single authoritative source and make the coordination cost visible in the design.

Subscribers should rely on documented event schemas, not undocumented message details or assumptions about a publisher’s internal model. At high event volumes, batching or aggregation may help, but consumers and producers still need plans for back pressure and delayed or stale messages.

Should services use synchronous APIs or asynchronous messaging?
Choose based on what the caller needs, not on a blanket preference for one style. A direct API call fits when the caller needs an immediate answer. If the caller only needs confirmation that work was accepted, a durable queue or event stream can decouple the producer’s timing from the consumer’s availability.
| Pattern | Use it when | Design for |
|---|---|---|
| Synchronous API call | The caller needs a result before it can continue. | Runtime dependency on the called service, clear timeouts, and failure behavior. |
| Asynchronous queue or event stream | An acknowledgement is enough and work can finish later. | Durable delivery, retries, stale work, eventual consistency, and back pressure. |
A durable intermediary can isolate failures and reduce point-to-point timing dependencies, but it does not eliminate operational work. Decide how long queued work remains useful, what happens after retries, and what the caller’s time threshold is. AWS Well-Architected guidance recommends decoupling components through published interfaces and asynchronous interactions where appropriate; its REL04-BP02 page was updated December 6, 2023. How should a workflow spanning services be coordinated?
For event notifications or dependencies that are controlled within a service boundary, choreography—where participants react to events—can be appropriate. When work crosses service boundaries and needs explicit progress tracking or rollback, orchestration—a coordinator directing the steps—may be easier to reason about. A saga is a common pattern for coordinating distributed work with compensating actions when a step fails.

When should you split, merge, or redraw a boundary?
Use operating behavior as evidence. A service boundary may be creating more coupling than it removes when services repeatedly call one another, depend on shared data structures, need simultaneous deployments, or cannot evolve independently. Trace requests across boundaries and use logs and monitoring to identify where dependencies and failures occur; distributed tracing is particularly useful for following a request through multiple services.
| Evidence | What to reconsider |
|---|---|
| Frequent chatty calls between two services | Whether the functions belong in one cohesive boundary or need a different contract. |
| Changes routinely require coordinated releases | Whether the services are truly independently owned and deployable. |
| Direct access to another service’s tables or schema | Data ownership, API boundaries, or published events. |
| Strong consistency requires tight cross-service coordination | Whether the related functionality should remain together. |
| More services add operational and consistency work without useful independence | Whether the decomposition is justified at all. |
Microservices bring independent deployment and scaling possibilities, but also more communication, operational components, and consistency work. Keep functions that change together together unless a real requirement—such as distinct scale, availability, security, or ownership—justifies separating them. Microsoft’s architecture overview covers both the operational needs and trade-offs of the style: Microservices Architecture Style.
