Diagnose a Sons of the Forest dedicated server by its symptom before changing settings. A server that exits immediately usually points to malformed dedicatedserver.cfg, a bad save, or a port conflict; a running server missing from the browser points to query reachability, LAN-only mode, or an incorrect public port; a listed server that times out points first to game traffic; and a loading hang often indicates world-save synchronization.
For a home-hosted server, the current port reference uses UDP 8766 for game traffic, UDP 27016 for Steam browser queries, and UDP 9700 for world/save synchronization. All three require inbound firewall permission and NAT forwarding. The procedures below show how to isolate each failure without destroying a working world.

Start with the symptom, not the settings
Read the server console and the last lines of the log before editing anything. Record what happens, when it happens, and whether the process remains running. Change one setting at a time so you can associate a new failure with a specific edit.

Verify the three required UDP ports
Port errors are easier to diagnose when each port has one job. The numbers below are UDP values; do not substitute TCP rules unless your provider explicitly documents a different implementation.

“Open” means both halves of the path are configured: the operating-system firewall allows the dedicated-server executable or the relevant UDP rules, and the router’s NAT rule sends each port to the current private address of the server. Forwarding to an old DHCP address is a common reason a rule appears correct but does nothing.
Managed hosting changes who controls the network edge. The provider normally assigns the public address and external ports and exposes them in a panel. Use the exact address and port shown by that panel rather than assuming the default numbers above are externally reachable. You still need to verify that the panel’s firewall and forwarding controls are enabled.
When the server will not start or exits immediately
1. Capture the final console and log lines
Start with evidence, not a reinstall. In a hosting panel, open Console and read the lines immediately before shutdown. On a self-hosted machine, inspect the dedicated-server log output in the service’s configured log location. An error that names JSON parsing, a save slot, a bind failure, or a port usually narrows the next step.

Malformed JSON is a frequent post-edit failure. Typical mistakes include a missing comma, mismatched quotation marks, or an unmatched brace. Stop the service, copy the file as a rollback, run the complete file through a JSON validator, correct the syntax, save it, and start the service again. Do not validate only the section you changed: one invalid character anywhere in the object can prevent the process from reading the file.
Compare the file with a last-known-good copy when possible. Preserve the game’s expected value types while repairing it; changing a number into quoted text or deleting a required key can create a different startup error even when the JSON parser accepts the file.

3. Make sure you edited the active file
Panels and service wrappers can use a working directory or user-data path that differs from the folder you opened manually. Confirm all three locations: the service’s working directory, the active dedicatedserver.cfg, and the user-data directory used for saves. Restart after saving and check the console for a value that should reflect your edit. If the output never changes, stop troubleshooting the value itself and locate the file the service actually reads.
4. Rule out a port conflict
A second game server, an old process, or another application can already be bound to one of the configured UDP ports. Stop duplicate instances, check the host’s process and network listeners, and start only one server. If the panel lets you choose alternate ports, change one assignment deliberately and update the corresponding firewall and NAT rules together; an isolated port edit without matching network rules simply changes the symptom.

5. Test whether the save is the trigger
If the process fails while loading a world, switch temporarily to another save slot or a fresh world. A clean world that starts normally points to corruption or incompatibility in the original save rather than a global installation problem. Stop the service before replacing or restoring any save data.
Safe startup sequence
- Stop the server completely and wait for the process to disappear.
- Copy the current configuration and the entire
SonsOfTheForestDSdata directory to a separate backup location. - Read the last console/log lines and identify whether the failure occurs during configuration parsing, binding, or world loading.
- Validate
dedicatedserver.cfgand correct only the confirmed syntax or value problem. - Start with another save slot or a fresh world if the failure is tied to world loading.
- Once the server starts, restore one setting or the original save at a time, restarting between tests.
When the server runs but is not visible in the browser
Check LAN-only mode
Verify that the server is not configured with LanOnly enabled. LAN-only mode is appropriate for players on the same local network but prevents normal public discovery.
Separate discovery from gameplay
Browser visibility depends on the Steam query path, so test UDP 27016 independently of UDP 8766. A server can have a healthy process and a correctly forwarded game port while a blocked query port keeps it out of the list. Permit the dedicated-server executable in the host firewall, create the inbound UDP rule, and confirm that the router forwards the query port to the machine running the service.

Use the provider’s public address and port
For a home server, verify the public address currently assigned by the internet connection and ensure the router rule points to the server’s current private address. For a managed server, copy the public address and externally assigned port shown in the provider panel. Do not assume that the internal port number is the same as the public one.
Test from outside the LAN
Join or query from a network that is not the server’s local network, such as a friend’s connection or a mobile hotspot. An inside-the-LAN test can succeed even when the internet-facing NAT or provider firewall is closed. If the external test fails while local players can connect, focus on the public address, provider port, router forwarding, and edge firewall rather than game files.
When players see the server but cannot join
Start with UDP 8766
Because the listing already works, treat UDP 8766 as the first network check. Confirm that the configured game port is allowed inbound on the host firewall and forwarded by the router to the correct private address. Recheck the destination after a DHCP change or machine migration; a rule aimed at yesterday’s address will produce a join timeout even when the server is listed.
Interpret a loading hang
If the player reaches the loading stage and then stalls, check UDP 9700. This port carries world and save-file synchronization. A blocked or mis-forwarded 9700 rule can leave the initial browser and connection steps looking healthy while the save never finishes syncing. Inspect the console during the attempt for synchronization errors and verify the rule on both the host and router.
Do not change several layers at once
Record one join attempt, change one firewall or forwarding rule, and test again. Simultaneously editing the game port, query port, configuration file, and save slot removes the evidence needed to tell a network fault from a data fault.

When everyone is rejected after a game patch
A game update can leave the dedicated-server installation on the previous build. Clients on the newer build may then be rejected even though the server process starts normally and its ports are open.
- Stop the dedicated server.
- Run the provider’s or installation method’s update for the dedicated-server files.
- Wait for the update to finish and confirm that no old server process remains.
- Start the server again.
- Have clients restart or update their game and verify that their builds are compatible with the server.
Managed panels may offer an update button or scheduled workflow, but the operator still needs to confirm the resulting build and perform a restart. If rejection continues after both sides update, return to the console log and check whether the message has changed from a version mismatch to an authentication, port, or save-loading error.

Correct values have no effect when the service is reading a different file or data directory. Verify the panel’s displayed working directory, the user account running the service, and the active dedicatedserver.cfg path. Search for duplicate copies created during migrations or manual backups, then edit only the file referenced by the service definition.
After saving, stop and restart the service rather than relying on a live reload unless the panel explicitly documents one. Use a harmless, observable change and confirm it in the startup output. If the output still reflects the old value, revert the edit and continue tracing the path; repeatedly changing the same inactive file can obscure the original configuration.
When a save fails, the world will not load, or progress disappears
Protect the complete data directory first
Before an update, migration, repair attempt, or slot change, stop the service and copy the entire SonsOfTheForestDS data directory. A partial copy may omit metadata needed to restore a world. Keep at least one untouched backup separate from the live server so an automatic overwrite cannot destroy the only recovery point.
Distinguish a bad world from a bad server
Start a different save slot or a fresh world after making the backup. If the alternate world loads, the original slot is the likely fault. If every slot fails in the same place, investigate configuration, installation files, ports, or the server build instead of repeatedly replacing the save.
Restore in a controlled order
- Stop the service and confirm that no server process is writing files.
- Preserve the failed data directory by renaming or copying it.
- Restore a known-good backup of the complete directory.
- Start the server and watch the console through world loading.
- Allow players back only after a test connection and save cycle succeeds.
Do not overwrite a backup with a newly failing state. If no backup exists, keep the original files intact while testing another slot so a later recovery attempt still has the maximum available data.
Use save-related settings cautiously
The server settings include initType, save slots, the autosave interval, and log visibility. Change these only with a specific recovery goal and record the original values. The /restart command is destructive: the official-wiki mirror warns that it resets save data. Treat it as a recovery operation after a verified backup, never as a routine way to apply a configuration edit.

Choose home hosting when you can maintain NAT rules, firewall permissions, updates, and independent backups. Managed hosting is the practical alternative when router access, a stable public address, or time for hands-on recovery is the limiting factor; it does not remove the need to check builds, logs, and save health.

Escalation checklist
Before asking a provider or community for help, collect a concise record:
- The exact symptom: startup exit, missing listing, join timeout, loading hang, post-patch rejection, or save failure.
- The final console and log lines from the failed attempt.
- The active configuration path, working directory, and user-data path.
- The configured game, query, and synchronization ports, with the corresponding firewall and NAT status.
- The server and client build numbers after the latest update.
- Whether another save slot or fresh world starts.
- The time of the last known-good backup and the restore steps already attempted.
This record prevents repeated changes and lets support distinguish a network boundary problem from a configuration, version, or save-data problem.
