Players must load the same client-side content. A server can start while still being broken if the database connector, PBO, mod list, or network ports are wrong, so test each layer in order.

What a working Chernarus Exile installation contains
Chernarus is the terrain; an Exile mission is the playable scenario that defines spawns, traders, loot, safe zones, vehicles, persistence settings and other rules. You need both. Installing only a terrain mod gives the server a map but no Exile gameplay, while copying only a mission PBO leaves the server unable to load its terrain dependencies.

@ExileServerfiles in the server installation. - Chernarus dependencies: the exact terrain and object mods declared by your selected mission. A commonly named pair is CUP Terrains Core and CUP Terrains Maps, but the mission readme is authoritative.
- Mission PBO: copied to the server’s
MPMissionsdirectory. - Database and connector: MySQL or MariaDB containing the Exile schema, accessed through a compatible extDB build.
- Configuration and launch parameters: server config, profile and BattlEye paths, client and server mod lists, and an unattended mission-start option.
- Network access: UDP ports 2302 through 2306 forwarded to the machine running the server.
Keep a record of the exact mission version, PBO filename, mod versions and Workshop IDs. A Chernarus mission is not interchangeable with another mission merely because both use the same terrain.
Choose and verify the mission before installing anything
Read the mission’s dependency list
Download a mission that is maintained for your Exile and Arma 3 versions, then open its readme or release notes. Record every required Workshop item, whether each item is client-side or server-only, the required launch parameters, database instructions and the expected mission PBO filename. Do not substitute a similarly named mod or a newer version without checking compatibility.

Compare missions on operational requirements
| What to compare | Why it matters | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Terrain and object dependencies | Missing or mismatched content causes absent terrain, objects or startup errors. | Exact mod names, Workshop IDs and versions. |
| Mission PBO | The PBO contains the scenario configuration and must be selected by the server. | Filename, release date and installation directory. |
| Database schema | Exile persistence fails when tables or migrations do not match the mission and Exile build. | Required SQL file and ordered upgrade scripts. |
| Client versus server files | Loading a server-only package on clients, or omitting a required client mod, prevents joining. | Which packages belong in -mod and which belong in -servermod. |
| Launch parameters | Some missions depend on profile, config, startup or performance settings. | Required switches and sample command. |
| Exile/extDB compatibility | A 32-bit/64-bit mismatch can make a running server appear to have no database connector. | Server architecture and extDB architecture. |
If a mission’s readme does not state its dependencies or database expectations, select a better-documented mission rather than guessing. Keep the original PBO unchanged and edit a copy only when the mission author documents the required changes.
Install or update the Arma 3 dedicated server
Install with SteamCMD
Use SteamCMD on the server host. Replace <path> with a real absolute directory and use a Steam account that can download the dedicated-server files:
steamcmd +force_install_dir <path> +login <user> +app_update 233780 validate +quit
Anonymous login is supported for the dedicated server itself according to Exile’s setup documentation. Workshop downloads for Exile require a Steam account that owns Arma 3. Run the update again whenever you change the server’s Arma 3 branch, and keep a backup of configuration, mission and database files before a major update.
Confirm the server layout
After installation, identify the directory containing the server executable. Create or verify these locations relative to it:
MPMissionsfor custom mission PBO files.@ExileServerfor server-side Exile content.- A profile directory for server identity, logs and BattlEye files.
- A separate backup directory outside the live installation.
Do not put a mission PBO inside @ExileServer or a client mod folder. The dedicated-server documentation uses MPMissions for custom mission PBOs.
Install Exile client and server content
Install the client package
Obtain the Exile Workshop item with published ID 1487484880. Every player, including the administrator who tests the server, must enable this client-side content. If the server reports a missing addon at join time, check that the player’s launcher has loaded the same Exile build required by the mission.

Copy the server package’s @ExileServer directory into the dedicated-server installation. Keep the directory name exactly as expected by your launch command unless the package documentation says otherwise.

Before proceeding, start the executable once with your intended profile path and stop it cleanly. This creates baseline configuration folders and confirms that the host can run the dedicated server independently of the mission.
Install the Chernarus terrain dependencies
Use the mission’s exact Workshop requirements
The researched Chernarus hosting instructions name CUP Terrains Core and CUP Terrains Maps as dependencies for the relevant missions. Other Chernarus missions may require a different combination or additional object packs. Install the exact Workshop items and versions listed by your mission; do not infer IDs from a search result or assume that a similarly titled package is compatible.
Place downloaded mods in the server’s mod directory using the folder names expected by the mission. The same client-side terrain mods must be enabled by every player. A server can load while clients see missing buildings, black terrain or an immediate dependency error if their mod set differs.
Build one canonical mod list
Create a written list in load order. Separate packages into:
- Client and server mods: Exile and terrain dependencies that both sides must load.
- Server-only mods: packages explicitly documented as server-side; these belong in
-servermod. - Optional client mods: cosmetic or convenience packages that the mission does not require. Leave these out while troubleshooting.
Use the same order on the server and in the player’s launcher where the mission documentation specifies an order. Do not add unrelated mods until a clean, persistent baseline works.
Put the mission PBO in the correct place
Copy the file
Copy the supplied custom mission PBO directly into:
<Arma 3 server>MPMissions
On Linux, use the corresponding MPMissions directory under the server installation. Preserve the filename and extension exactly. If the archive contains a folder with mission files, the release instructions may require you to pack that folder into a PBO first; do not leave an unpacked mission directory unless the mission specifically supports it.

Inspect or edit safely
Use a maintained PBO tool when the mission author instructs you to edit configuration. Make a backup of the original PBO and keep an unmodified copy outside the live server. A malformed repack can produce a mission-start failure that looks like a missing mod, so change one file at a time and test after each repack.
Check the filename against the mission cycle
The name selected in the server configuration must match the PBO’s mission name, including map and environment suffixes. A correctly copied PBO will still never start if the mission cycle points to a different name or if the selected world does not match the Chernarus terrain required by the mission.
Set up MySQL or MariaDB and extDB persistence
Install the database server
Install a supported MySQL-compatible database on the same host or an address reachable from the game server. Exile’s development setup describes MariaDB 10.11 as a safe choice. Create a dedicated database and account with only the permissions needed by Exile; do not reuse an unrelated application’s administrator account.
Import the schema and upgrades in order
- Locate the Exile package’s
MySQL/exile.sql. - Create the target database and import
exile.sql. - Find every
upgrade-*.sqlfile supplied for versions newer than the imported schema. - Apply those upgrade files in their documented numerical or version order, without skipping an intermediate migration.
- Confirm that the expected Exile tables exist and that the database account can read and write them.
Do not import a second copy of the base schema over a live database to fix a connection problem; that can destroy or conflict with existing data. Back up the database before applying an upgrade.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Match extDB to the server architecture
Configure extDB with the database host, port, database name, username and password. Then check whether the server executable is 32-bit or 64-bit. The stock Exile 1.0.4a package contains 32-bit extDB2 DLLs; a 64-bit server will not find or load those binaries. Install a connector build that matches the executable architecture and place its files where the Exile setup expects them.
Read the startup log for extDB initialization and database connection messages before testing gameplay. A server that reaches the lobby is not proof that persistence works: join, create or change a player state, stop the server cleanly, restart it and verify that the state returns.
Configure and launch the server
Use a server configuration file
Create a server configuration file containing the hostname, password policy, mission cycle and other settings required by your installation. Start the executable with -config pointing to that file. Keep the profile and BattlEye paths explicit so logs are written to a location you can inspect.

Load client and server mods separately
A representative Windows-style command has this shape:
arma3server_x64.exe -config=server.cfg -mod=@Exile;<terrain-mods> -servermod=@ExileServer -profiles=<profile-path> -bepath=<battleye-path> -autoInit
Replace <terrain-mods> with the exact dependency folders from the mission readme. Keep @Exile in -mod and @ExileServer in -servermod unless the package documentation specifies a different arrangement. On Linux, use the executable and path separators appropriate to that host. The Exile README documents this general launch pattern.
Why -autoInit matters
-autoInit allows an unattended server to initialize and start the configured mission without an administrator selecting it interactively. If the process starts but no mission runs, verify this switch, the mission cycle, the PBO filename and the -config path before changing gameplay settings.
Read startup logs in a fixed order
- Confirm the executable starts without an architecture or missing-DLL error.
- Confirm each mod is found and loaded; note warnings for unknown or duplicated folders.
- Confirm the mission PBO is found and the selected world is Chernarus.
- Confirm extDB initializes and authenticates to the database.
- Confirm the mission reaches a running state and begins listening on the game port.
Open the required network ports
Forward these UDP ports from the router to the host running the dedicated server:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Port | Role described by Exile setup guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 2302 | Game traffic | Server configuration, NAT rule and firewall rule all target the running executable. |
| 2303 | Steam query traffic | Server appears in the browser and responds to queries. |
| 2304–2306 | Additional Steam/BattlEye traffic | Forward the complete range, not only the game port. |
Allow the same UDP range through the host firewall. If the server is behind carrier-grade NAT or a provider firewall, local port forwarding alone may not be enough; ask the network provider whether inbound UDP is available. Test from outside the local network, because a successful connection from the server’s own LAN does not prove public reachability.
Make required Workshop mods discoverable
Add meta.cpp to each mod root
Bohemia Interactive’s Workshop pairing documentation uses a meta.cpp file in the mod’s root directory. It must identify the Workshop item, for example:
protocol = 1;
publishedid = 1487484880;
Use the published ID belonging to the specific mod in that folder; the Exile ID above is an example for the Exile package, not a replacement for a terrain mod’s ID. The server browser can then identify required Workshop content. Administrators must set this identifier or users may have to activate mods manually.
Best Value
Validate pairing without hiding dependency errors
Pairing makes discovery easier but does not repair an incorrect mission, wrong mod version or missing server files. After adding meta.cpp, test with a clean client profile and verify that every required item is offered and loaded. Keep a manual mod list for players who use a launcher that does not support automatic pairing.

First-run validation checklist
- The server starts with the intended executable architecture and no extDB DLL error.
- The startup log lists
@Exile, the terrain dependencies and@ExileServerin the intended parameters. - The mission PBO is directly under
MPMissionsand its name matches the mission cycle. - The server reaches the Chernarus mission rather than stopping at the lobby.
- A test client loads exactly the same required client-side mods.
- A player can join, receive a position or inventory change, disconnect and reconnect with that state intact.
- The server is visible externally and a second network can join through UDP 2302–2306.
- Logs, the database and the mission PBO are included in a backup plan before opening the server to the public.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The map is blank, objects are missing or the wrong terrain loads
Compare the server’s -mod list with the mission’s declared terrain dependencies. Confirm that clients load the same CUP terrain packages, when those are the mission’s requirements, and that the Workshop versions match. Check for a typo in a mod folder name and remove duplicate copies that could be loaded in an unexpected order.
The mission never starts
Confirm -autoInit, the -config path, the mission cycle entry and the PBO location. The PBO must be in MPMissions, and the mission name in the configuration must match it exactly. If you edited or repacked the PBO, restore the backup to determine whether the edit caused the failure.
Players join, but characters or bases never persist
Verify that exile.sql was imported into the database used by the server, then check that all required upgrade scripts were applied in order. Confirm the database credentials, host and port in extDB, and make sure the connector architecture matches the server. Read the extDB and server logs for authentication, table or DLL errors; do not treat a successful lobby connection as proof of persistence.
The server is invisible or clients cannot join
Check UDP 2302 through 2306 in the router and host firewall, confirm Steam query settings, and ensure the forwarding rule targets the machine’s current private IP. Verify that the firewall allows the executable you actually launch, not a different server binary. Test from an external network and inspect the server log for bind or port-conflict errors.
Workshop content is not offered automatically
Check that every required mod root contains a valid meta.cpp with protocol = 1; and the correct publishedid. A wrong ID, a file in the wrong directory or a malformed statement prevents pairing. Players can still load the mods manually, but the server browser will not identify them correctly until the metadata is fixed.
Players report a missing addon despite matching names
Compare the actual loaded mod list in the client and server logs rather than relying on folder names. Confirm the mission’s required version, remove stale duplicate downloads and restart the launcher after changing Workshop content. If the mission readme specifies a fixed version, use that version instead of automatically updating one side only.
Operate the server safely after it works
Back up the parts that contain player progress
- The Exile database, including a dump taken before every schema upgrade.
- The mission PBO and any unpacked source used to rebuild it.
server.cfg, profile and BattlEye configuration.- Launch scripts and the exact mod manifest with Workshop IDs.
Document updates
Record the date and reason for each Arma 3, Exile, terrain-mod, mission or extDB update. Update the server during a maintenance window, test the mission and persistence with an administrator account, and keep the previous working files available for rollback. Do not update the server’s terrain dependency independently of clients when the mission requires matching versions.
When managed hosting is appropriate
A managed Arma 3 Exile server can reduce operating work, but confirm the controls before paying: you need access to mod installation and Workshop IDs, mission-PBO upload or replacement, database credentials or import tools, UDP port configuration, automated restarts, backups and current support for Exile and the mission’s terrain dependencies. If a host hides the PBO or database, you may be unable to fix the exact startup and persistence failures described above.
