Sonos Play is best suited to listeners who want one portable speaker for both a Sonos home setup and Bluetooth playback away from home. Sonos advertises up to 24 hours of battery life, an IP67-rated design and a built-in power bank, but those are manufacturer specifications—not independent test results. Its appeal over the smaller Roam 2 or larger Move 2 depends on how much portability you need and whether Wi-Fi listening matters to you.
What is the Sonos Play?
Announced on March 10, 2026, Sonos Play is a portable speaker designed to work over both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Sonos positions it for listening at home and taking music beyond the home network. Its launch announcement also lists a removable utility loop and phone-charging capability. These are features stated by Sonos, not findings from hands-on testing for this review. Check Sonos’s U.S. product page for current product details and availability.

Sonos describes Play as its “most versatile speaker with rich stereo sound that’s designed to live at home and move seamlessly beyond it.” That is the company’s positioning; it should not be read as an independent conclusion about sound quality.
How does it compare with Roam 2 and Move 2?
RTINGS places Play between the Sonos Roam 2 and Move 2 in size and price. That positioning makes the main choice less about a single “best” speaker and more about how often you carry it, where you use it, and whether it needs to join a Sonos system at home. RTINGS’ review is dated May 6, 2026.
#1 Best Overall
- Delivers seriously big stereo sound and deep bass in a take-anywhere design
- Up to 24 hours of playback and easy charging with included Wireless Charging Base.
- Optimized power management keeps your battery going longer, and swapping in a replacement is quick and easy.
- Drop-resistant durability plus waterproof and dustproof protection (IP67).
- Stream over WiFi with your Sonos system at home, and stream with Bluetooth anywhere.
| Choice | Consider it when | Trade-off to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Sonos Roam 2 | You prioritize a smaller speaker for carrying. | RTINGS places it below Play in size and price; confirm current specifications and pricing before deciding. |
| Sonos Play | You want a middle-ground portable speaker with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. | Its size, price and system features may be more than you need if you mainly want a compact Bluetooth speaker. |
| Sonos Move 2 | You are considering a larger portable speaker. | RTINGS places it above Play in size and price; confirm current specifications and pricing before deciding. |
This is a positioning comparison, not a claim that one model sounds better: the available independent coverage does not establish a complete set of directly comparable measurements. For listeners who only need Bluetooth playback and do not care about Sonos-system use, a lower-cost Bluetooth-only speaker may be a better-value fit; TechRadar also notes lower-cost portable speakers as alternatives.
What do the battery and durability claims mean?
Battery life
Sonos advertises up to 24 hours of battery life. “Up to” is a maximum claim, not a promise of that runtime in every situation. SoundGuys notes that actual endurance depends on listening conditions, including volume. SoundGuys’ review discusses that variability. If you expect long outings, treat the advertised figure as a guide and allow for your own listening habits.

Water and dust protection
Sonos lists an IP67 rating for Play. This is a manufacturer-stated rating; it is not a guarantee that every kind or duration of water exposure is suitable. Check Sonos’s product information for the specific limits and care guidance before using the speaker around water.
Phone charging
Sonos says Play can charge a phone, making the built-in power-bank feature useful when you are away from an outlet. The available information does not establish charging speed or capacity, so do not treat it as a substitute for a dedicated power bank without checking the current product specifications.

- The new acoustic architecture replaces Move's single tweeter with two, unlocking a higher-fidelity stereo soundstage with crisp vocals and detailed instruments. With deep, dynamic bass powered by the precision-tuned woofer, you'll feel the emotional charge of a live performance.
- With automatic Trueplay tuning, Move 2 continually optimizes the sound for its surroundings. So, no matter where you are or what you play, you get the best listening experience.
- Listen twice as long as with the previous generation. All the acoustic updates work in concert for increased efficiency, giving you up to 24 hours of playback on a single charge.
- Shock absorbent materials protect against accidental drops, and the IP56 rating ensures spills, splashes, rain, dirt, and dust don't dampen your listening experience.
- Use the built-in handle to bring your music from one place to the next. When the battery needs a boost, set Move 2 on the included Wireless Charging Base, upgraded with a detachable power cable and more compact adapter. Charge on the go with any USB-PD power supply.
Does Wi-Fi make Play worth choosing?
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth address different listening situations. Wi-Fi is relevant if you want the speaker to work as part of home-network or Sonos-system listening; Bluetooth is useful when you take it somewhere without that network. The combination is the central reason to consider Play instead of a Bluetooth-only travel speaker.
Specific streaming-service support and ecosystem features can vary, so check Sonos’s current product page for the services and functions you actually use. If your listening is almost entirely away from home and over Bluetooth, Play’s Wi-Fi capability may add little value.

What did independent reviews find, and what remains uncertain?
Independent reviews provide useful context but do not establish a full set of comparable test results here. TechRadar’s review, published March 26, 2026, reports three weeks of testing in its headline and frames Play as more versatile than a conventional Bluetooth-only option, while noting lower-cost portable speakers as alternatives. Read TechRadar’s review. SoundGuys’ March 26, 2026 review cautions that battery endurance varies with listening conditions. RTINGS’ May 6, 2026 review places Play between Roam 2 and Move 2 in size and price.

How much does Sonos Play cost?
TechRadar reported a U.S. price of $299 in its review dated March 26, 2026. That is launch-period review context, not a verified current price. Sonos’s U.S. product page is the place to check current pricing, colors and availability, which can change. View Sonos’s current U.S. listing.
Can you replace the battery?
Sonos describes the battery as replaceable. The available information does not establish whether a replacement battery is currently sold separately, what it costs, or how to obtain one. Confirm availability and compatibility with Sonos before treating battery replacement as a practical repair option.
