No. A GPU fan does not have to spin constantly: some graphics cards stop their fans at idle or under light load, then restart them when the card’s own cooling conditions are met. A stationary fan is normal only when that exact model supports fan-stop and its start conditions have not been reached. Check the card’s specifications and support guidance rather than relying on a universal temperature.
What GPU fan stop means
Fan-stop is a cooling-control feature, not proof by itself that a fan or graphics card has failed. When heat output is low, a card may rely on its heatsink without running its fans. As load or temperature rises, the fans should start according to the card’s control rules.

Manufacturers use different names and conditions. MSI calls its feature Zero Frozr; ASUS calls its feature 0dB. The exact model matters: support for the same GPU chip does not establish that every card built around it has the same fan-stop behavior.

A fan controller may consider temperature, power draw, a software setting, or a combination of these. ASUS’s 2025 FAQ lists different conditions for different RTX models and notes that actual temperature and wattage can vary with configuration, usage, operating conditions, and power-management settings. Its examples are model-specific, not general rules for all graphics cards.
#1 Best Overall
- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs

| Fan start when GPU temperature is above 55°C or wattage is above 100 W | ASUS ROG’s 2025 FAQ gives this condition for several listed RTX models; it is not universal. ASUS ROG FAQ |
| Fan stop when GPU temperature is below 50°C and wattage is below 50 W | One part of the fan-stop condition for several listed ASUS models when 0dB mode is enabled; other models in the FAQ have different conditions. ASUS ROG FAQ |
| Fans silent below 60°C | MSI gave this as an example of Zero Frozr operation on supported cards in a 2021 support article. Treat it as dated, model-specific guidance, not a cross-brand threshold. MSI support article |
How to check whether your GPU fan should be spinning
- Identify the exact graphics-card model. Use the name printed on the card or shown in your system utility, then consult that model’s official specifications or support page. For MSI cards, check the product datasheet’s feature list for Zero Frozr. MSI fan troubleshooting guidance
- Confirm fan-stop support and its settings. Check whether the model includes the feature and whether its required mode is enabled. For the ASUS models described in its FAQ, 0dB Fan mode must be enabled in GPU Tweak II for the stated fan-stop conditions. MSI’s current troubleshooting page explains how to check or disable Zero Frozr in MSI Center. Software names and menus can differ by card and version. ASUS ROG FAQ MSI support guidance
- Check readings under a suitable workload. Monitor GPU temperature and, if available, power draw, then compare them with the start conditions for your model. MSI Afterburner can display GPU temperature and fan speed and allows custom fan profiles; changing a profile is optional, and it should still provide adequate cooling under load. What to do if the fan does not start when expected
- Review software and control settings. Confirm that the fan-stop mode and fan profile are configured as intended. ASUS lists updating the graphics driver as one troubleshooting step. ASUS troubleshooting guidance
- Check for a physical obstruction safely. ASUS advises shutting down and unplugging the PC before using a small brush to clear dust that may be stopping a fan. Follow the card maker’s safety and warranty directions; do not disassemble the card based on generic instructions. ASUS troubleshooting guidance
- Contact the manufacturer about a persistent fault. MSI advises contacting Customer Service if the fan does not spin at boot. ASUS directs owners to product support if a fan is seriously stuck and warns that using a card with a malfunctioning fan may damage it. Do not leave a confirmed cooling fault unattended. MSI also warns that setting fan speed too low under maximum load can cause overheating and thermal throttling. If you adjust a fan curve, prioritize safe cooling over silence. MSI fan curve guidance
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a stationary fan is normal—and when it is a warning
- Likely normal: Your exact model supports fan-stop, its mode is enabled, and the card has not reached its published start condition.
- Needs investigation: The model’s start condition has been reached but the fan remains stationary, the fan is visibly obstructed, or the card reports or shows signs of a cooling problem.
- Get manufacturer support: The fan is seriously stuck, fails to start when the manufacturer says it should, or continues to malfunction after settings and safe obstruction checks.
Do not assume that a fan must spin constantly, but do not assume that every stationary fan is harmless either. The distinction is whether the exact card’s fan-stop feature and operating conditions explain what you are seeing.
