1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Sonos Ace Ultra is a strong premium headphone in its own right, with the comfort, sound, noise cancellation and battery life to stand up to everyday Bluetooth use. Its second-round improvement is more specific: Headphone Linking can hand system audio between the headphones and compatible Sonos speakers over Wi-Fi. That feature is promising, but Sonos currently labels it Early Access, and T3’s reviewer encountered setup friction. You do not need Sonos equipment to use the Ace Ultra as Bluetooth headphones.
What is new about the Sonos Ace Ultra?
Ace Ultra is a new headphone model, not a firmware update to the original Sonos Ace. Sonos announced it on 1 September 2026, specifying a Sonos-designed 40 mm driver, Adaptive ANC using ten microphones, and up to 35 hours of battery life with ANC on. The meaningful addition for Sonos households is Headphone Linking, which Sonos says can move playback to and from the headphones without a phone in range. Sonos’s announcement describes the system connection as a core part of the product’s pitch.

That positioning is the company’s claim, not proof that every household handover will be seamless. The two audio-transfer features are distinct:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Headphone Linking: moves system audio between Ace Ultra and compatible Sonos speakers over Wi-Fi. Sonos lists this as Early Access; it requires compatible hardware, Wi-Fi and setup in the Sonos app.
- TV Audio Swap: moves TV audio from a compatible Sonos soundbar to the headphones. It is not the same thing as handing music or other system playback between speakers and headphones.
These features deepen the role of Ace Ultra in a Sonos home; they do not make a Sonos system necessary for ordinary Bluetooth listening.

How does it perform as a headphone?
Sound
T3 reviewer Mike Lowe’s two-week review is enthusiastic about the sound as well as the system feature. He tested at home on a Sonos network and away from home, including walks, public transport and long-haul flights, and judged the sound highly competitive. That is one reviewer’s listening assessment, not a controlled comparison or a guarantee that every listener will prefer its tuning.
Sonos says the Ace Ultra’s Adaptive EQ measures the ear-cup seal and adjusts sound. Its guide also describes customizable 3-band and 8-band EQ options. Sonos’s guide explains those manufacturer-described features. What Hi-Fi? also reports Dolby Atmos spatial audio with head tracking on services including Tidal, Amazon Music and Apple; availability depends on the service and playback setup.
Noise cancellation and comfort
Sonos specifies ten microphones for Adaptive ANC, and Lowe praises the cancellation. He also reports wearing the headphones for a 15-hour flight and finding them very comfortable. That is useful firsthand context, but it is not a standardized comfort test: fit and comfort vary with head shape and personal preference.

- SPATIAL AUDIO IMMERSION: Personalized dynamic head tracking, 360-degree sound for movies, music and immersive everyday listening.
Battery and charging
Sonos’s published figure is up to 35 hours of playback with ANC on. Treat that as a manufacturer maximum, not an independently measured result here; actual runtime can vary with settings and use. The guide says three minutes of charging can provide up to three hours of playback with ANC on, and describes a power-saver mode that extends remaining battery by strategically disabling features.
Build, weight and upkeep
T3 reports a weight of 322 g. Lowe found the carrying case’s zipper finicky, a small but practical irritation when packing and unpacking. Sonos says the vegan-leather ear cushions can be swapped when worn and that the battery is replaceable by a skilled operator. That is not a claim of user repairability, and Sonos does not establish a repair cost in the cited guide.
Does Headphone Linking work smoothly?
Lowe says his initial pre-release setup was troublesome. After resets and switching from Android to iOS, the feature worked; a colleague’s setup worked immediately. In everyday use, he found handover took a few seconds. Those are review observations, not a prediction that a particular phone or network will behave the same way for you.

What Hi-Fi? tested Headphone Linking with a Sonos Beam (Gen 2), reporting that transfer required the Sonos app and the same network; in that test, the reviewer held a button for roughly five seconds. This is an independent account of one setup, while Sonos’s current guide describes the feature as Early Access. Check the guide for current compatibility and instructions before relying on the handover in your own system.

The system integration also has limits. Lowe says the headphones cannot join a Sonos speaker group and would benefit from deeper app integration. Headphone Linking is therefore a useful handover, not the equivalent of turning Ace Ultra into another fully groupable Sonos speaker.
Is Ace Ultra worth buying without Sonos speakers?
Yes, it can be considered as a standalone Bluetooth headphone. Sonos ownership is not a prerequisite for basic headphone use, so the decision should rest on whether you like its sound, fit, ANC, controls and price compared with other premium models. The distinctive home-system handover and soundbar-based TV experience, however, depend on compatible Sonos equipment, Wi-Fi and app setup.

Price, colors and availability
T3 lists launch pricing at £399 / $449 / €449 / AU$699, with sales beginning 29 September 2026, and names Black, Soft White, Agave and Sand as the color options. These are regional launch details, not a promise of today’s price or stock. The Indian Sonos product page showed ₹44,999 when accessed; that regional page figure is time-sensitive. Verdict
Sonos Ace Ultra is a genuinely compelling second round because its appeal is not confined to the new system feature: T3’s reviewer also rates its sound, ANC, comfort and battery highly. For Sonos owners, Headphone Linking gives the headphones a more useful household role, although Early Access status, setup variability and the inability to join speaker groups temper the promise. For everyone else, it remains a standalone premium headphone, but ecosystem novelty alone is not a reason to choose it over capable rivals. Compare fit, sound, weight, battery and current local price—not just the Sonos badge.
