SonicWall SMA 1000, Fortinet FortiGate, and Cisco Secure Firewall are not interchangeable appliances with a proven universal winner. Choose by the access experience your users need, where the gateway will run, the security controls and resilience you require, and the lifecycle and total cost of the specific configuration. The available vendor documentation supports a requirements-led comparison, but not a like-for-like capacity, performance, or price ranking.
What is being compared?
SonicWall describes Secure Mobile Access (SMA) as a secure access gateway for corporate resources hosted on-premises, in cloud, or across hybrid environments. SMA 1000 is one series in that wider product family. FortiGate and Cisco Secure Firewall are alternative remote-access VPN approaches, but the cited documentation does not establish a specific model-to-model match with an SMA 1000 appliance.

The practical comparison is therefore about fit: map the actual access workflows, deployment and operating requirements to a supported product and release, then validate the configuration and commercial terms with a proof of concept and current quotes.
How do the documented options differ?
| Option | Documented remote-access approach | Deployment or management details established | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| SonicWall SMA 1000 | SonicWall describes application-level VPN, browser-based clientless access, granular access controls, context-aware device authorization, authentication integration, and managed-device health checks. Connect Tunnel and Mobile Connect are identified as clients used with SMA 1000. SonicWall SMA product page | SonicWall lists hardened physical appliances, private-cloud virtual appliances on ESXi or Hyper-V, and public-cloud instances in AWS or Microsoft Azure. It also describes Central Management Server (CMS) for centralized management and deployments. SonicWall SMA product page | The page does not provide a current cross-vendor price/performance matrix or independent capacity comparison. Confirm the exact model, release, licensing and operating requirements. |
| Fortinet FortiGate | Fortinet documents IPsec and SSL VPN approaches. Its guidance distinguishes client-based tunnel access, which supports a broad range of applications, from browser-based web or Agentless access, which supports a more limited set. Fortinet remote-access guidance | The cited material describes FortiGate remote-access VPN options and security considerations; it does not compare management burden or deployment cost with SMA 1000. | Release matters: FortiOS 7.6.3 replaces SSL VPN tunnel mode with IPsec VPN and renames SSL VPN web mode Agentless VPN. Confirm the target FortiOS release and model. Fortinet Agentless VPN 7.6.3 documentation |
| Cisco Secure Firewall | Cisco documents Secure Client remote access using full-tunnel SSL and IPsec-IKEv2 connections to a security gateway. Cisco Secure Firewall Remote Access VPN documentation | The cited document establishes a relevant remote-access approach, not a particular appliance match, management comparison or deployment-cost figure. | Identify the Cisco product and configuration that would actually be deployed before comparing it with a specific SMA 1000 setup; the documentation cited here does not establish equivalent capacity or price. |
Start with the access pattern, not the product label
A full network tunnel, per-application access and browser-only access solve different user and policy problems. Vendor terms such as “clientless,” “web” and “Agentless” are not enough to establish equivalence. List the workflows users must complete and test those exact applications and protocols.

- APPLIANCE ONLY: Hardware unit sold without a service subscription — security services, firmware updates and support are NOT included and must be purchased separately to activate protection.
- PERFORMANCE: Up to 2.5 Gbps firewall inspection, 1 Gbps threat prevention and 1.2 Gbps IPSec VPN throughput driven by SonicWall's patented Reassembly-Free Deep Packet Inspection (RFDPI) engine.
- CONNECTIVITY: 8x1GbE + 2x1G SFP in a desktop form factor; zero-touch deploy and manage on-box or via cloud Network Security Manager (NSM).
- THREAT PROTECTION: SonicOS 8 delivers intrusion prevention, gateway anti-malware, application control, TLS/SSL decryption, Capture ATP multi-engine sandboxing (RTDMI) and reputation-based content & DNS filtering with an active service subscription.
- BUILT FOR SMALL BUSINESS & BRANCH: Secure SD-WAN, IPSec and SSL VPN plus Zero-Trust Network Access through Cloud Secure Edge keep distributed sites and remote workers protected.
- Full tunnel: Determine whether users need broad network reachability or specific application access, which client and endpoint platforms are required, and how traffic should be routed and inspected.
- Application-level access: Establish which named resources and protocols need to be available, how narrowly policy can scope access, and whether legacy applications work as expected.
- Browser-based access: Identify whether users can work without a client, which applications and functions the browser mode supports, and what cannot be done without a tunnel.
Fortinet’s descriptions distinguish broad application support in tunnel mode from more limited support in web/Agentless mode; these are vendor descriptions, not independent comparative test results. For FortiOS 7.6.3 and later, plan around the documented transition from SSL VPN tunnel mode to IPsec VPN, and validate any remaining browser-based needs against the target release.
Check deployment, identity and endpoint controls
SMA’s documented deployment choices include physical hardware, private-cloud virtual appliances on ESXi or Hyper-V, and public-cloud instances in AWS or Microsoft Azure. That breadth may matter if the organization needs to place access gateways in different environments, but it does not by itself prove that one form has better performance or lower cost than another vendor’s design.

For each shortlisted configuration, confirm the specific identity provider and authentication method, MFA, certificate handling, endpoint posture checks, and controls for unmanaged devices. SonicWall describes authentication integration, context-aware device authorization and health checks for managed devices. Fortinet’s guidance recommends securing remote access with measures including remote authentication servers, certificates, MFA and suitable TLS configuration. Verify the exact integrations, required licenses and policy behavior in current product documentation and a proof of concept.
For regulated deployments, SonicWall’s SMA product page lists SMA Series v12.1 FIPS certification material naming the SMA 6210 and SMA 7210. That identifies models in the family; it does not establish that every module, configuration or deployment is certified for every use. Confirm the applicable certificate and cryptographic module boundary for the intended configuration. SonicWall SMA product page

Evaluate scale and resilience with your workload
The cited vendor sources do not establish a common independent benchmark or comparable cross-vendor capacity figures. Do not infer that advertised maximums are equivalent: model, software release, traffic mix, authentication, inspection, concurrency and failover conditions all matter. Request configuration-specific capacity guidance, then test a representative workload.
- Set expected concurrent users, sites and growth assumptions.
- Measure performance using the applications, protocols, identity checks and endpoint policies you will actually enable.
- Test high availability and failover, including session behavior and recovery time, against your requirements.
- Include administration, reporting and multi-site policy operations in the evaluation. SonicWall documents CMS, but the cited sources do not compare management platforms or operating effort across vendors.
Account for version changes and product lifecycle
Remote-access features and client behavior can change between releases. Fortinet’s 7.6.3 change is a concrete example: SSL VPN tunnel mode is no longer supported starting in that release, and web mode is renamed Agentless VPN. If migrating or upgrading FortiGate, confirm the exact target release and model, map tunnel users to IPsec VPN where required, test client and application behavior, and prepare a rollback plan.

Keep SonicWall product families distinct: the cited SMA 100 end-of-sale/end-of-support statement applies to SMA 100, not to SMA 1000. Do not transfer SMA 100’s status to the 1000 series. SonicWall directs customers to its lifecycle tables; verify support and lifecycle dates for the precise SMA 1000 model and software release before purchase or migration. SonicWall Cloud Secure Edge (CSE) is an architectural alternative, not a like-for-like appliance. SonicWall’s licensing documentation distinguishes Basic, which provides VPN-style network access, from Advanced, which provides ZTNA access to individually named resources. The documentation was last validated October 1, 2026. Build the procurement comparison around total fit
Compare complete, supportable configurations rather than appliance names or feature-counts. For each candidate, document the following before making a recommendation:
- Required applications, protocols and user workflows, including full-tunnel, application-level and browser-only access needs.
- Gateway placement: physical, virtual, cloud instance or a cloud-delivered service, including any constraints from existing infrastructure.
- Concurrent user count, expected growth, sites, measured workload and high-availability requirements.
- Identity, MFA, certificates, endpoint posture, unmanaged-device policy and any regulatory certification requirements.
- Administration and reporting needs, who will operate the system, and the skills and processes required.
- Model- and release-specific lifecycle dates, upgrade policy, client changes, migration effort, change window and rollback plan.
- Term costs for hardware, software, users, support, high availability and renewals, based on current vendor or authorized-channel quotes.
The available sources do not provide current cross-vendor quotes, street prices or a total-cost comparison. Likewise, they do not establish a universal winner or an independent performance ranking. A defensible choice requires current quotes, lifecycle confirmation, a validated model/software configuration and a representative proof of concept.
