Choose Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds if you want races that change course mid-event, extensive gadget customization, and crossplay with friends on supported platforms. Choose Team Sonic Racing if you want cooperation among three-person teams or a story-focused Team Adventure mode. The better fit depends on how you want to race, not on an established head-to-head verdict about which game is more fun or better made.
What is the main difference?
CrossWorlds changes the route during a race. In its three-lap format, a Travel Ring sends racers to a different world for lap two; lap three returns to the original course, but with altered shortcuts, obstacles, Rings, and items. SEGA’s September 25, 2025 launch announcement identifies Travel Rings as the game’s defining feature.

Team Sonic Racing makes cooperation the central mechanic. You race as part of a three-person team, and team performance matters. It supports solo play as well as local and network play, and also offers a single-race option.
Which fits your play style?
| If you care most about… | Better-supported fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Routes that change during a race | Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds | Travel Rings shift the course for lap two, with further changes when racers return to the original course for lap three. |
| Cooperating with teammates | Team Sonic Racing | Three-person teams and actions that help teammates are core to its design, including when you play solo. |
| A confirmed story scenario | Team Sonic Racing | Its Team Adventure mode includes a new story scenario. The official CrossWorlds material cited here does not establish a comparable story campaign. |
| Cross-platform online play | Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds | SEGA confirms crossplay across supported platforms; player capacity alone does not establish matchmaking quality or active population. |
| Vehicle customization | Both, in different ways | Team Sonic Racing lets you change parts that affect performance and appearance. CrossWorlds emphasizes gadgets and extensive machine customization. |

Parts and performance customization
You can customize vehicles with parts that affect both performance and appearance. That gives the game a different emphasis from CrossWorlds’ larger gadget-focused system.

Why choose Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds?
Travel Rings make races less predictable
The course change is not just a visual detour: the second lap takes place in another world, and the final lap returns racers to the original course with changes such as new shortcuts, obstacles, Rings, and items. If changing routes is more appealing than coordinating a team, this is the more direct fit.
Gadgets offer a broad customization system
SEGA’s launch material described more than 70 gadgets that can alter abilities and play style, as well as more than 70,000 machine combinations. These are publisher-stated launch-era figures, not independent counts. SEGA also announced 23 Sonic-universe characters at launch; that is not a current roster total, since updates and paid DLC have continued.

Modes, player counts, and crossplay
SEGA’s features page lists ranked World Matches, Time Trial, and seven single-player Grand Prix competitions. The launch announcement listed World Match for up to 12 players and local play for one to four players. SEGA separately lists local wireless play for up to eight on the original Nintendo Switch version. For Switch 2, SEGA Support specifies local multiplayer for up to four; check the exact mode and setup for your platform.
SEGA confirms crossplay across supported platforms. It does not establish current player population, queue times, or matchmaking quality, so the maximum online capacity should not be treated as a promise about how easy it is to find a race.

Team Sonic Racing
The official Team Sonic Racing page consulted is SEGA Japan’s regional listing. It names PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Steam, gives a Japanese release date of May 21, 2019, and lists one to four players and up to 12 over network play. Treat that as a Japan-region listing, not a complete inventory of current availability in every country; check your local storefront and edition before purchasing.
Quick Recap
How to make the choice
- Start with your platform. Check that the game and edition you want are available in your country and for your console or PC.
- Decide what you want from a race. Pick CrossWorlds for mid-race course changes; pick Team Sonic Racing for cooperative team mechanics.
- Consider solo play. Both have solo options, but Team Sonic Racing keeps its team system central, while CrossWorlds offers single-player Grand Prix competitions.
- For a group, check the exact setup. CrossWorlds supports crossplay and has platform-specific local limits; Team Sonic Racing lists up to 12 network players in SEGA Japan’s regional product information. Neither capacity figure tells you current population or queue times.
- On Switch 2, check version and format. Confirm the edition you intend to buy, and update CrossWorlds before trying World Match or DLC access.
