Travel Rings make races less predictable, and local play, online modes and Time Trials offer options beyond one multiplayer queue. The trade-offs are reviewer-reported online errors and balance frustrations, a course selection some reviewers found limited, and a full-price value question. If online competition is your main reason to buy, weigh those review-era complaints carefully.
What makes CrossWorlds different?
SEGA launched Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch on September 25, 2025; Steam and the Epic Games Store followed on September 26. Its defining mechanic is the Travel Ring: racers start on the main course, pass through a ring into a different CrossWorld for lap two, then return to the original course for the final lap. The new sections can bring different terrain, gates, shortcuts, obstacles, rings and items.

SEGA described the idea this way: “The game’s biggest feature is the introduction of Travel Rings, which transport players from one world to another, completely shaking up each race.” The format gives each race a more changeable rhythm than a fixed-course kart racer, though it does not guarantee that every alternate section will feel equally substantial.

Travel Rings add variety within a race
The course change happens during the race rather than between races. That gives players new terrain and route conditions to respond to, and makes shortcuts and positioning matter in a different way from simply learning one unchanging circuit.

Vehicle builds and gadgets invite experimentation
Parts and gadgets are intended to let players tune machines around different play styles. Tom’s Guide’s PS5 reviewer specifically praised the strategic customization and gadget loadouts. SEGA’s September 2025 launch announcement advertised more than 70 gadgets and more than 70,000 possible machine combinations; those are publisher figures, not independent measures of how distinct or viable those combinations are.
There are multiple ways to play
Nintendo’s listing describes split-screen Grand Prix and Race Park, online World Match for up to 12 players, and Time Trials. It lists one-system play for 1–4 players, local wireless for 2–8, and online play for 2–12 on Nintendo Switch; Nintendo Switch Online is required for online play on that version. SEGA also describes cross-platform play and team-oriented Festival events. Together, these modes give the game more uses than online matchmaking alone.
The series reached a notable sales milestone
SEGA reported more than 1 million units sold worldwide in an announcement dated October 23, 2025. The figure combines physical units and digital downloads across platforms, so it is a historical sales milestone, not a current lifetime total.

Cons to consider
Online reliability and item strategy drew criticism
In its January 2026 PC review, PC Gamer reported repeated errors and lobby kickouts, and criticized players for holding powerful items until late in a race. Those are the reviewer’s reported experiences and judgments, not proof that every player encounters the same problems or that they remain unchanged after patches.
Items and strong rivals can make races feel uneven
Tom’s Guide’s PS5 review called out powerful items and a strong CPU rival as downsides, saying they could create difficulty swings. Players who prefer races decided mainly by consistent driving may find that less satisfying than the game’s more chaotic approach.
Some reviewers wanted more course breadth
Tom’s Guide listed a slim course selection among its reasons to avoid the game, while PC Gamer found some CrossWorld sections too short to stand alone. These are review judgments about perceived variety and pacing, not a claim that the game lacks tracks: Nintendo’s listing specifies 24 tracks and 15 CrossWorlds.

Full-price value depends on your platform and DLC plans
PC Gamer questioned full-price value, particularly when additional DLC is considered. Its cited $70 context applied to its PC market and review period; it should not be treated as a current price for every platform or region. Check your local storefront’s price and the current edition details, especially if Season Pass content matters. SEGA’s launch announcement said the Digital Deluxe Edition included the base game and Season Pass, but DLC contents and timing can change.
What content is listed?
Nintendo’s product listing, accessed October 4, 2026, gives the following figures for the game:
| Item | Nintendo listing |
|---|---|
| Tracks | 24 |
| CrossWorlds | 15 |
| Characters | 23 |
| Original vehicles | 45 |
| Gadgets | 70 |
| Items | 23 |
These listed totals describe the breadth of content, but they do not by themselves establish how much variety each player will experience or how balanced every option is.

Is Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds better on Switch 2?
That depends on what you value. The Nintendo Switch 2 version arrived after the original release. SEGA announced a physical Switch 2 edition for March 26, 2026, describing enhanced graphics and higher frame rates. SEGA says the Switch 2 version has the same content as other platforms and that saved data can transfer from Switch to Switch 2.
Nintendo also lists the original Switch game as supported on Switch 2, with behavior consistent with the Switch version, and offers a separate Switch 2 version and Upgrade Pack. The physical Switch 2 edition’s launch announcement included a Werehog Pack download code as an early-purchase bonus; that launch offer should not be assumed available now. For a buying decision, compare the versions and Upgrade Pack in your local storefront and consider whether you want a physical copy, the Switch 2 performance improvements, or to keep using a Switch copy you already own.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWho is the game for?
- A good fit: players who enjoy high-energy competition, changing race routes, item chaos and tuning a vehicle to suit a preferred style.
- Potentially a poor fit: players who prioritize stable online lobbies, tightly controlled balance or extensive course variety above all else.
- Worth checking before purchase: the current local price, the edition’s included DLC, and the available play options for your platform and household.
For those deciding between platforms, SEGA says the game supports crossplay. The best version to buy therefore comes down less to exclusive content and more to ownership, preferred performance, physical-versus-digital preference and local multiplayer needs.
