Then restart the game and network equipment, compare Wi‑Fi with Ethernet, and inspect PC firewall or VPN settings. These reversible checks separate a platform outage from a home-network, device, game-client, or other-player problem.
What a CrossWorlds connection failure can mean
Online play can fail at several points: the platform or game service may be unavailable, your game may be out of date, the console or PC may have an incorrect clock, the local router or wireless link may be unstable, or a PC security setting may block the game client. A race can also be affected by the other player’s network. SEGA’s CrossWorlds guidance notes that network instability can make the game difficult to play or return players to the title screen.

The official game site lists PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam and Epic Games versions. It lists online races for up to 12 players and local play for one to four. The Open Network Test FAQ described crossplay across platforms; use the current in-game and platform menus for today’s lobby and crossplay controls because that FAQ covered the 2025 test.

Work from the least disruptive checks to settings changes. Do not begin with port forwarding, custom DNS, a new router, or wholesale antivirus removal; the official guidance does not establish those as first-line CrossWorlds fixes.

1. Check whether the problem is widespread
Look at the service-status page for the platform or PC client you use before changing your home network. SEGA’s general network guide directs players to the Steam, Epic and Xbox status pages. A status page tells you where to check, not whether a CrossWorlds outage is happening right now, so read the current incident and maintenance information at the time of the error.
- Check the status page for your platform or client.
- Note any maintenance, authentication, matchmaking, or account-service incident.
- Ask a friend on the same platform whether they can start an online race; a wider failure is more likely when several players report it at once.
- If the platform reports an incident, wait for the service to recover instead of repeatedly changing router settings.
No live CrossWorlds outage can be inferred without a current status result. If the service page is normal and only your device fails, continue with local checks.
2. Install the current game and platform updates
Open your platform’s update screen and install every available CrossWorlds and system or client update. SEGA states that the game client and required updates must be current for online play. A December 18, 2025 SEGA notice said Ver. 1.2.2 was required for online modes at that time; that historical notice does not establish that 1.2.2 is still the current version in 2026.

Do not treat a version number seen in an old announcement as a promise that it is the latest release. The platform’s own update screen is the authoritative check for your edition.

3. Correct the console or PC clock
Turn on automatic date, time and time-zone synchronization, then apply the setting and restart the game. Authentication and matchmaking can fail when the device clock is substantially wrong. CrossWorlds-specific guidance and SEGA’s general network guide both call out incorrect system time or failed clock synchronization.
- On a PC, enable automatic time and time-zone settings, then use the operating system’s “Sync now” or equivalent control.
- On PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch, use the system Date and Time settings and enable the network-provided or internet-synchronized option.
- Check the displayed date, time and time zone after synchronization; an apparently correct clock with the wrong time zone can still indicate a configuration problem.
4. Fully restart the game and network equipment
Close CrossWorlds rather than leaving it suspended, then launch it again. If that does not help, restart the modem and router. SEGA’s general procedure is to unplug the modem and router from power for five minutes, reconnect them, and wait until their normal connection lights settle before retrying.
- Exit the game to the console dashboard or close it on the PC.
- Unplug the modem and router power cables. If your internet service uses a combined gateway, unplug that single unit.
- Leave the equipment unpowered for five minutes.
- Reconnect power and wait for the normal internet, WAN, or broadband indicators to return. This can take several minutes.
- Reconnect the console or PC, start CrossWorlds, and test the same online mode.
A restart clears a temporary session or routing fault; it cannot repair a provider outage or another player’s unstable connection.

5. Compare Wi‑Fi with a wired Ethernet connection
If the console or PC is on Wi‑Fi, connect it directly to the router with Ethernet and retry. SEGA Support’s Network Troubleshooting page, updated March 10, 2026, states: “To rule out your wireless connection as potential cause, please try to connect your device through an ethernet cable (if possible) and check if the situation improves.”

Use the comparison as a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed performance upgrade. Wireless conditions can change because of neighboring networks, electrical devices, distance, walls, and channel congestion. If Ethernet works while Wi‑Fi fails, move the console closer to the router, reduce obstructions, pause heavy wireless downloads, or adjust the router’s wireless placement and channel using its own documentation.
- Use a cable from the console or PC’s Ethernet port to a LAN port on the router.
- If the device has no Ethernet port, check whether its manufacturer supports a compatible USB or console network adapter.
- Retest after the router has fully reconnected; do not compare while the modem is still negotiating service.
- If wired and wireless connections fail in the same way, the cause is less likely to be Wi‑Fi alone.
PC-only checks for blockers
On Steam or Epic Games, a VPN, proxy, recently changed network setting, antivirus rule, or firewall rule can prevent authentication or matchmaking. Inspect these settings narrowly and keep security protections enabled generally.
VPN and proxy
- Disconnect the VPN temporarily, or set the VPN client not to route the game traffic if it provides that option.
- Check the operating system’s proxy settings and turn off a proxy that you do not intentionally use.
- Restart the game client after changing either setting.
- If the connection works only without the VPN or proxy, contact that service’s support or administrator rather than leaving the PC unprotected.
Firewall and antivirus permissions
Open the security product’s allowed-app, exceptions, or exclusion controls and verify that the game and its client are permitted on the network profile you use. SEGA recommends checking these permissions and contacting the relevant security-product support for exact instructions. Do not disable antivirus or the firewall wholesale as a routine fix.
Managed networks
School, office, hotel, and other managed networks may block game traffic or restrict matchmaking. Ask the network administrator whether gaming traffic is permitted. Do not attempt to bypass an organization’s policy by changing settings you do not control.

Platform accounts, subscriptions, and crossplay
Online access depends on the rules for your platform, region, account, and edition. The Open Network Test FAQ said Nintendo Switch Online was required for Switch online modes such as World Match and Festa during that test, while no subscription was needed merely to participate in the test. Those statements were dated and test-specific; they do not verify the released game’s current subscription requirement. Confirm the current entitlement in your platform’s official account or support settings, and do not infer PlayStation or Xbox requirements from the old test FAQ.
Crossplay was officially described for the Open Network Test. If players on different platforms cannot join the same lobby, verify that everyone is running the current game version and follow the current in-game crossplay and lobby instructions. Account restrictions, parental controls, privacy settings, or a suspended online entitlement can prevent joining even when the home internet is working.
Use the symptoms to narrow the cause

When the other player may be responsible
Online quality is two-sided. The PS4 CrossWorlds FAQ says that the opponent’s environment may be involved when your local checks find no problem. A friend’s unstable Wi‑Fi, overloaded connection, or platform issue can affect a match even when your own speed test and other games look normal.

Do not assume that buying equipment or changing your DNS will fix a fault outside your network.

What not to change first
- Port forwarding: The official CrossWorlds material reviewed does not establish a port-forwarding recipe. Avoid opening inbound ports without a verified platform instruction.
- Custom DNS: No CrossWorlds-specific evidence establishes a DNS address as a fix.
- New router or modem: Restart existing equipment first. Replacement hardware is not a supported first-line remedy for this symptom.
- Wholesale security shutdown: Keep antivirus and firewall protection on; check only the game and client permissions.
- Game boosters and generic VPNs: They are not established fixes and can add another routing or security variable.
Optional Ethernet cable: when it helps
An Ethernet cable is the only physical accessory directly aligned with SEGA’s troubleshooting advice. It is useful when your console or PC and router have compatible ports and you want to rule out Wi‑Fi or improve local stability. Check the cable length and whether a USB or console adapter is required. It cannot resolve a platform outage, an account restriction, another player’s connection, or every local configuration problem.
Prepare a useful support report
If the ordered checks do not restore online play, contact the relevant platform support or SEGA support rather than repeating increasingly invasive router changes. Include:
- Console model or PC operating system, game edition, and the platform or client used.
- Your country or region and the exact date and time of the failure.
- The complete error text or code, including capitalization and punctuation.
- The mode affected, such as World Match, Festa, a private lobby, or cross-platform play.
- Whether the game and platform are fully updated and whether the device clock is synchronized.
- Whether a five-minute modem/router power cycle changed the result.
- Whether Ethernet worked differently from Wi‑Fi and whether other online games connect.
- Whether friends on the same or different platforms can connect.
- Any VPN, proxy, firewall, antivirus, school, work, hotel, or parental-control restriction in the path.
This information lets support distinguish a local wireless fault from a client, account, platform, service, or peer-side problem. It also avoids claiming that a local fix exists when the evidence points elsewhere.
Bottom line
Check the platform status and current updates first, synchronize the clock, then restart CrossWorlds and your modem/router using the five-minute power-off procedure. Test Ethernet against Wi‑Fi, and on PC inspect VPN, proxy, firewall, and antivirus permissions without disabling security broadly. If those checks fail, account for the other player’s network and escalate with the exact platform, mode, error, and test results. There is no published CrossWorlds failure-rate statistic or universal ping threshold that can predict which fix will work, so diagnosis depends on these controlled comparisons.
