How Much Energy and Water Does a Washing Machine Use? US and EU Figures Explained

There is no universal “per load” figure for a washing machine. Water and electricity use change with the model, load size, programme, temperature and whether the appliance also dries clothes. The dependable way to answer the question for your home is to read the appliance’s label for its market and then adjust for the cycles you actually run. US and EU labels use different tests, so their numbers should not be mixed.

The shortest accurate answer

For the US market, the currently posted ENERGY STAR comparison says a full-sized certified washer uses 14 gallons of water per load, versus 20 gallons for a standard full-sized machine. Those are category figures, not a promise for every model or programme.

European Union appliances use a different reporting system. The rescaled A-to-G label shows weighted electricity consumption per 100 eco 40–60 cycles and water used per eco 40–60 cycle. It also shows capacity, programme duration and spin noise. To find the tested values for a particular EU model, scan the label’s QR code to open its entry in the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL).

Question Best evidence to use Important qualification
How much water does this US washer use? EnergyGuide, the manual and the model’s ENERGY STAR listing Use the stated cycle and capacity; the 14-gallon category figure is not a household guarantee.
How much electricity does this US washer use? EnergyGuide annual kWh, plus ENERGY STAR efficiency metrics Annual estimates depend on the label’s assumed usage and hot-water conditions.
How much does this EU washer use? A-to-G label and EPREL model record Read the kWh per 100 eco 40–60 cycles and litres per eco 40–60 cycle together.
What if it is a washer-dryer? The separate washing and complete washing-and-drying figures required by EU rules A complete cycle includes drying and can use substantially more electricity.

Why one “average washing-machine” number is misleading

A washer fills, heats, tumbles, drains and spins differently in each programme. A lightly loaded quick wash can have a different water pattern from a full cotton cycle; a hot or sanitary programme generally needs more heating energy than a cold wash. Capacity also matters: a larger drum may use more resources per cycle even when it uses fewer resources per garment when filled appropriately.

Labels also measure different boundaries. An annual kWh estimate, a per-cycle water figure and a weighted efficiency factor are not interchangeable. Before comparing two models, confirm that they are the same appliance type, measured on the same programme and expressed in the same units. Keep the country and the date attached to any statistic: US category data and EU market estimates describe different populations and test systems.

US figures: water, electricity and the labels that matter

Water use: 14 gallons versus 20 gallons

ENERGY STAR currently posts 14 gallons per load for a full-sized ENERGY STAR washer and 20 gallons for a standard full-sized machine. The comparison is useful for understanding the potential difference between certified and conventional equipment, but it does not specify your chosen programme, your load size or your exact model. Check the machine’s own documentation before forecasting a bill.

Electricity use: start with EnergyGuide

The yellow EnergyGuide label is designed for model-to-model comparison of estimated annual energy use and operating cost. Treat the annual kWh as an estimate based on the label’s assumptions rather than a meter reading from your household. If your family runs more or fewer cycles, or uses different temperatures, your result will differ.

What IMEF and IWF mean

ENERGY STAR’s Product Finder lists two US efficiency metrics. Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF) accounts for energy used during the wash cycles and standby, the energy needed to heat incoming water, and the energy required to remove remaining moisture. A higher IMEF indicates better efficiency. Integrated Water Factor (IWF) compares weighted water consumption with the washer’s cubic-foot capacity; a lower IWF indicates better water efficiency. The definitions and model data are explained on the ENERGY STAR clothes-washer criteria page.

The criteria page’s residential levels are identified as current on April 22, 2021. Do not present those thresholds as a newly revised 2026 standard; use them as the date-qualified criteria shown by ENERGY STAR.

Why temperature dominates the electricity result

ENERGY STAR says, “Water heating consumes about 90% of the energy it takes to operate a clothes washer.” That is general consumer guidance, not a guarantee for every machine or cycle: the share changes with incoming-water temperature, selected temperature, programme design and the appliance’s controls. ENERGY STAR advises washing cold when suitable, noting that changing from hot to warm can cut energy use in half and that cold uses still less. It also says cold water generally cleans well except when oily stains require more heat.

How often Americans run washers

The same ENERGY STAR consumer page states that an average American family washes about 300 loads each year. That is a stated average, not a universal household count. Multiplying a label’s per-cycle value by your own annual cycles is more meaningful than applying the 300-load figure automatically.

EU figures: read the A-to-G label and EPREL record

What the rescaled label reports

The EU rescaled label, in use since 1 March 2021, rates washing machines from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). Its central electricity number is weighted consumption in kWh per 100 eco 40–60 cycles. The label also gives water consumption per eco 40–60 cycle, rated capacity, the duration of that programme and spin-noise information. The European Commission’s washing-machine guidance recommends selecting eco 40–60 and washing full loads when possible.

  • Unbalance could be a very serious issue for washing machines. It could cause washing machine to dance on the floor, or even worse, to unleash itself from the water inlet, leaking everywhere. Equipped with Auto Unbalance Detection (AUD), however, it's able to automatically fix the unbalance issue through allowing more water to come in. It will also alert the user if the problem can't be fixed, ensuring a safe and pleasant experience. NOTE : Refer to the PDF attached below in Technical Specification for the Installation and Troubleshooting Steps

Use EPREL for the exact model

Scan the label’s QR code or search the model in EPREL to inspect the underlying product record. Use the listed capacity and programme duration as well as the energy and water values: a machine that looks efficient on a 100-cycle figure may not suit a household that routinely runs small loads or needs short programmes.

EU-wide figures are market estimates, not your appliance’s reading

The European Commission’s 2024 impact-accounting estimates describe the EU27 appliance stock in 2020. They estimate 175 million washing machines and washer-dryers in use, completing 174 cycles per machine per year and using 1,161 billion litres of water in total. After ecodesign and labelling measures, the estimated average electricity use was 96 kWh per year, compared with 159 kWh per year in the Commission’s 2020 no-regulations scenario.

The same assessment estimates average water use at 6.3 cubic metres per year, or 9 litres per kilogram, after those measures. The page reports that this was 52% below its counterfactual without the measures. These are EU market-stock estimates for 2020, published in the Commission’s 2024 accounting work; they are not live 2026 household averages and should not be substituted for your model’s label.

Washer versus washer-dryer: do not compare unlike cycles

EU rules require separate reporting for washing and for a complete washing-and-drying cycle. A washing-only result stops after the spin stage. A complete cycle includes the dryer’s heated air and drum operation, so its electricity figure can be substantially higher. Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/2023 sets the reporting framework in the EUR-Lex text.

When a listing shows one impressive-looking number, check whether it belongs to washing only or to the complete cycle. Compare washing with washing and complete with complete; otherwise the apparent efficiency difference is mostly a measurement mismatch.

Calculate your household’s annual use

From an annual US EnergyGuide value

  1. Write down the annual kWh printed on the EnergyGuide label.
  2. Use that figure as the label’s baseline, then adjust your expectation if your number of cycles or temperature choices differ materially from the label assumptions.
  3. Multiply annual kWh by your electricity tariff to estimate annual electricity cost. Use the rate on your bill, including any per-kWh supply and delivery charges that apply.

From a per-cycle or EU label value

  1. Record the energy value in kWh per 100 eco 40–60 cycles and divide by 100 to obtain kWh per labelled cycle.
  2. Multiply that per-cycle value by the number of cycles you expect to run in a year.
  3. For water, multiply the labelled litres per eco 40–60 cycle by your annual cycles, then divide by 1,000 for cubic metres.
  4. Compare the result with your water and sewer tariff. If your home heats water separately, remember that the electricity or gas used for that heating may appear on a different bill.

These calculations are planning tools. A mixed laundry routine will not match an eco 40–60-only label exactly, and a small load, extra rinse, hotter setting or high-soil option can change the result.

How to compare models without being misled

Check What to record Why it changes the decision
Appliance type Washer-only or washer-dryer Drying energy must not be folded into a washing-only comparison.
Capacity Rated kilograms or cubic feet It determines how much laundry can be washed per cycle and how water factors are normalised.
Energy basis US annual kWh, US IMEF, or EU kWh per 100 eco cycles These are different reporting conventions; compare like with like.
Water basis US IWF or the EU litres per eco cycle Lower is not meaningful unless the capacity and test basis are also comparable.
Programme duration Eco-cycle time and the programmes you actually use An efficient eco programme may take longer, affecting whether you will use it consistently.
Installation limits Available width, depth, ventilation and plumbing A theoretically efficient model is impractical if it cannot be installed or loaded correctly.
Purchase and utility costs Local price, electricity, water and sewer rates A lower running cost only matters alongside the upfront price and your local tariffs.

For US models, use the ENERGY STAR model information and EnergyGuide. For EU models, use the physical label and its EPREL entry. Do not treat an ENERGY STAR certification, an EnergyGuide estimate and an EU A-to-G grade as one shared scale.

Practical ways to reduce water and electricity use

Choose a full load when the programme allows it

ENERGY STAR says washers use about the same energy regardless of load size and recommends full loads where possible. The European Commission likewise recommends full loads. Follow the manual’s loading guidance: overstuffing can prevent proper cleaning and rinsing, while repeatedly washing tiny loads wastes the fixed energy and water needed to run a cycle.

Use cold water for suitable laundry

Select cold when stains and fabric-care instructions permit it. Because heating is the dominant energy component identified by ENERGY STAR, lowering the temperature usually has more impact than changing minor options. Keep hot or sanitary programmes for cases that genuinely need them, such as particular hygiene requirements or heavily oily soil.

Try eco 40–60 in the EU

The Commission specifically says to select the eco 40–60 programme. Expect that programme to take longer than a quick cycle: its label values are designed around efficient washing of normally soiled cotton items, not every laundry emergency.

Use the correct detergent dose

The Commission advises using the right quantity of detergent. Excess detergent can trigger additional rinsing or leave residue, while too little may lead to rewashing. Dose for soil level, load size and the detergent’s instructions rather than assuming more is cleaner.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Quoting one average for every washer: identify the country, machine population, programme, date and energy boundary first.
  • Applying 14 gallons to every US load: treat it as ENERGY STAR’s full-sized category comparison, then consult the model documentation.
  • Comparing a hot cycle with a cold-cycle label: temperature changes the water-heating requirement, so match settings before judging models.
  • Reading an EU kWh-per-100 figure as one cycle: divide by 100 before multiplying by your annual cycles.
  • Mixing washer-only and complete washer-dryer data: use the separate figures required by EU regulation.
  • Calling EU 2020 estimates current household averages: they describe the EU27 stock and activity modelled for 2020, published in the Commission’s 2024 impact-accounting work.
  • Ignoring programme duration: an eco option may save resources while taking longer; compare the time with your real routine.

Bottom line

Use the label for the exact machine, not a generic internet average. In the US, start with EnergyGuide and the ENERGY STAR model record; in the EU, read the A-to-G label and EPREL entry. Then multiply the stated per-cycle or annual value by your own laundry habits, keeping temperature, programme, capacity, geography and washer-dryer status attached to every comparison.
