Sombrero Galaxy vs. the Milky Way: Structure, Star Formation and Evolution

The Sombrero Galaxy and Milky Way share a disk, bulge and halo, but differ in viewing angle, cluster population and current star formation.

The Sombrero Galaxy and the Milky Way share a broad layout—a stellar disk, central bulge and extended halo—but they look strikingly different because of their shape and our viewing angle. We see the Sombrero Galaxy nearly edge-on, with its bright bulge and dark dust lane in profile; we observe the Milky Way from inside its disk. The comparison also reveals differences in globular-cluster populations and present-day star formation, while evidence about the Sombrero’s assembly and black hole remains uncertain.

Why the Sombrero Galaxy looks so different

The Sombrero Galaxy, also called M104 or NGC 4594, is a spiral galaxy seen nearly edge-on. Its luminous central bulge rises above a sharply defined, dusty disk, giving the galaxy its broad-brimmed appearance. NASA describes a smaller disk embedded in the bright core and tilted relative to the larger disk—an additional structural detail that is not apparent from the familiar silhouette alone. NASA’s Hubble overview of M104 and its Messier 104 catalog entry describe these features.

The Milky Way is also a disk galaxy with a central bulge and a halo containing stars and globular clusters. But we view it from within the disk, with the Sun located there, rather than looking at it from outside. That perspective makes a direct visual comparison difficult: M104’s edge-on profile puts its bulge and dust lane in clear view, while our own galaxy’s components are inferred and mapped from inside. NASA’s account of the Milky Way and Milky-Way-like galaxies provides context for its disk-and-bulge structure.

Scale estimates

NASA places M104 roughly 28 million light-years from Earth in one Hubble-era overview and about 30 million light-years away in a newer Webb description. NASA also gives its mass as about 800 billion solar masses. These are reported estimates, not exact constants. The differing distance figures reflect the rounded values used in NASA’s descriptions. See NASA’s Hubble overview and NASA’s Webb account of the Sombrero’s disk.

Globular clusters: a striking difference in numbers

NASA estimates that M104 has nearly 2,000 globular clusters—dense, gravitationally bound groups of stars orbiting the galaxy. In NASA’s comparison, that is about ten times the number orbiting the Milky Way. The clusters in M104 are old, with estimated ages of roughly 10–13 billion years, similar to the ages of Milky Way globular clusters. The large count is a notable contrast, but by itself it does not establish how M104 assembled. NASA discusses the cluster population in its Hubble overview and Webb description.

How much are the galaxies forming stars now?

NASA’s Webb-era description says M104 forms fewer than one solar mass of stars per year and characterizes its central black hole as relatively calm. NASA’s comparison on a separate Webb page puts the Milky Way’s current star formation at roughly two solar masses per year. Another NASA account describes the Milky Way as forming about one star per year. These are approximate figures stated in different ways and sources; the “one star per year” wording is not the same measurement as a rate in solar masses per year. The sources therefore support a picture of relatively low present-day star formation in M104, not a single definitive rate comparison. See NASA’s Sombrero Galaxy page and its Webb image description, alongside NASA’s Milky Way comparison.

Central black holes: estimates for M104 do not agree

Both galaxies have central black holes, but the reported mass for M104 varies substantially by source. Older NASA Hubble descriptions put it at about one billion solar masses. A 2011 orbit-based dynamical modeling paper reports 6.6 × 108 solar masses, while a newer NASA Webb page gives nine billion solar masses. The sources cited here do not explain why the newer NASA figure is much higher or establish which estimate should be preferred. Treat the Sombrero’s black-hole mass as unsettled rather than choosing one value as definitive.

NASA puts the mass of the Milky Way’s central black hole, Sagittarius A*, at about four million solar masses. Any comparison of the two black holes depends on which M104 estimate is used; the figures do not support a single unqualified mass ratio. The estimates are reported in NASA’s older Hubble overview, NASA’s newer Webb description, the 2011 paper Orbit-Based Dynamical Models of the Sombrero Galaxy (NGC 4594), and NASA’s Hubble black-hole overview.

What the evidence says about each galaxy’s history

M104’s outer halo and globular-cluster system offer clues to its assembly. NASA’s Hubble reporting discusses halo properties, including metallicity, as evidence relevant to a possible major accretion event. That is an interpretation of the evidence, not a complete or settled origin story. NASA contrasts this possibility with the Milky Way’s history of accreting smaller satellite galaxies. The halo findings and their interpretation are described in NASA’s report on the Sombrero’s halo.

For the Milky Way, NASA’s 2013 account examined 400 Milky-Way-like galaxies across an 11-billion-year span to study how such galaxies developed. That sample helps researchers investigate the Milky Way’s formative years by looking at analogs at different cosmic epochs; it is not a direct record of every stage in our galaxy’s history. The study and its limits are described in NASA’s report on the Milky Way’s formative years.

Can you see the Sombrero Galaxy?

NASA says M104 can be spotted with a modest telescope. What appears in the eyepiece depends on observing conditions and equipment, so spotting the galaxy should not be taken to mean that its detailed dust lane and bulge will be clearly resolved. NASA’s Messier 104 guide offers a starting point for locating it.
